Ethiopian food!!!! Papusas!! Also Indian, Caribbean and Peruvian Food. Foreign-born co-workers also bring this kind of food to work pot-lucks! This is a great food city!
I used to work in DC and lived in the area, Arlington, to be exact. This was back in the late 70s, and being from Jersey, I didn't really eat much pizza while down there because how could I? The NY/Jersey/Philly area always has the best pizza in the country. And when I was in NYC, big slices was always common.
Hi there. Was thinking about the Dupont hotel in August. Mom is 80. Will need a motorized scooter. Any suggestions? I am assuming the company will drop it off at the hotel. Staying 4 nts.
GreT video rob. Yummy half smokes. Do you know a great place in DC for a Reuben sandwich. Right now I love the ones that Bethesda bagels has, but I would love to know your favorite if you like them.
Hmmm. I don't really eat many Reuben sandwiches but maybe you can find something in the WCP sandwich guide. washingtoncitypaper.com/article/525255/feast-on-washington-city-papers-local-sandwich-guide/
I think we're lucky to have all nationalities ..food and different culture live here and so we definitely can different things ...we also have seafood oysters crab cakes too etc
Loved the video and the tips Rob. I am heading out to DC Oct 23-26 and your "Tips, Tricks, and Hacks" have been invaluable. Thanks for that. I was looking at staying at Hotel Harrington on 11st SW (I'm cheap), however, I am now looking at the Holiday Inn or CitizenM on 6th St SW, but I noticed there isn't much food around there. What are your thoughts? Is staying south of the National Mall a good choice? I'll pretty much be on foot or capital bike share.
These are all of my recommended hotels www.triphacksdc.com/hotels The two you asked about are not on the list because there is not much in the immediate vicinity.
Ben's Chili Bowl was a one and done for me. I can say, been there, done that, and never wasting my money again. The only plus of Ben's was the people that work there. They were so nice and helpful. The food was awful IMHO. Thank you for the information on the Eastern Market! I will definitely go there next trip.
Ben's is the most famous half smoke and has a lot of history but I don't eat there with any frequency. For a visitor it could be OK for an experience though.
I love going to Ben's Chili Bowl whenever I visit DC. It was on my bucket list. The half smokes were very good especially loaded with Chili. (I'm from New York City so we don't have something like this.) I went the next day for breakfast and had grits with cheese. So good. My last day I had the chili with cheese for dinner. The chili was spicy but oh so good. Ben's Chili Bowl may not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it as well as seeing the historical pictures on the walls outdide.
I live in DC and Ben’s is definitely underwhelming, Don’t waste your time!! However, those chicken wings with mumbo sauce, jumbo pizza slice and pupusas are A MUST!!! Great video very informative
Great video Rob!! The next time you come over to Annapolis for a seafood fix, I highly recommend the oysters at the Middleton Tavern or McGarvey's Saloon & Oyster bar, both in downtown.
@Steven Kelley OH no! that is sad, I was planning to go next week. Thanks for the update. I've heard there is a good seafood market in Pasadena. Have you been there? For now I'm just going to The Point and Cantlers for my seafood
@Steven Kelley You are referring to the new restaurants. Look at Chinatown. It is not really a Chinatown. And the best place for Vietnamese food and Middle Eastern food in the region is not even in DC but in Eden Center and Seminary Hill, respectively, in No VA.
Is the Clarenden section of Arlington along Wilson Blvd. still primarily Vietnamese? I lived in Arlington in the late 70s and that area was know as Little Saigon back then.
I would recommend Half Smoke on Georgia Ave by Howard University and not just because I went to school with the owner .. Ayssinia is near where I live. And now you can buy mumbo sauce in stores and it was started by a black woman
Um, the most common reason given for why half-smokes are called "half-smokes" is because they are only somewhat smoked, unlike fully-smoked sausages. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with cutting them in half or not.
I grew up in the College Park Maryland area and worked in DC for Uncle Sam. Actually, your food choices are not great except for the crab cakes and seafood. How about empanadas and tamales instead of Pupusas? Many people, including Salvadorians, ordered tamales for Christmas. How about Pork BBQ like Red, Hot and Blue and other local joints? The hotdogs served in the vending carts in the tourist areas and Peruvian Chicken restaurants that are everywhere. The Ethiopian restaurants are great, especially their bread. The ice cream made by the University of Maryland Dairy.
Respect putting Mumbo sauce on there a must when u go to dc 💯💯
This video was excellent! Respect!
Thanks!
Ethiopian food in Adams Morgan and il Canale in Georgetown were two of my favorites. Thanks for the great information!
Great choices.
I had some good east Indian food in the Adams Morgan area
Sounds great.
Ethiopian food!!!! Papusas!! Also Indian, Caribbean and Peruvian Food. Foreign-born co-workers also bring this kind of food to work pot-lucks! This is a great food city!
From DC. Like your video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it.
And I'm so happy that you mentioned it
LOVED the chili dog or "half-smoke" at Ben's at Reagan National Airport when I went to DC in July 2021
Eastern Market smokes are legit. Great tip.
No problem 👍
I agree jumbo slice.. I guess it's a DC thing . .but we definitely don't have the best pizza New York hands down with won

I'll be going there in a few weeks, and the first thing I want to do after I land at Reagan is hope on the Yellow to Ben's for a half-smoke.
From someone who has 40 years of eating half smokes, deep fried are the best. This is the way I ate them as a child.
I clicked so fast! Awesome!
Glad you enjoyed 😃
You forgot fish. We love croaker with mustard.
Hi there. Was thinking about the Dupont hotel in August. Mom is 80. Will need a motorized scooter. Any suggestions? I am assuming the company will drop it off at the hotel. Staying 4 nts.
I am down for a half smoke and Papusas! We will hunt them down lol! The Eastern Market looks like a side trip in itself. Thanks Rob!
Eastern Market especially on the weekend is it's own destination.

Hola! Greetings from El Salvador. We're flying to DC the next week ❤️❤️❤️
Enjoy your trip!
that mumbo sauce looking a little Chicago mild saucy to me
I tried Ethiopian food at chercher ..what do you think about union market for foodlovers
Union Market is great. Definitely check it out.
this dude is dope - great video - thx for the knowledge from me n the wife
I definitely want to try some of these foods, and I totally agree with you about the giant pizza slice.
Enjoy!
And because DC has a large El Salvadorian and Ethiopia population.. I would definitely try pupusas and Ethiopian food

And if you're really from DC then you know that our signature dish is mumbo sauce that we like to put on chicken or french fries
Its clean smells good beutiful thanks
Thank for a very informative video. I also like how you don’t stand to the camera straight on.
I love Japanese, mexican, and Chinese! any places you'd recommend Rob?
Nah seafood belongs to eastern VA too and the Chesapeake region as a whole, which I consider DC as an outskirt of.

It is over priced

I live here and feel like this! Never figured out all the hype around them.....yuck!!
Great video Rob!! The next time you come over to Annapolis for a seafood fix, I highly recommend the oysters at the Middleton Tavern or McGarvey's Saloon & Oyster bar, both in downtown.
Thanks for the tip!!
@Steven Kelley thanks for the tip! I'm definitely going to go! Only been here 6 years and still have lots to learn!

Hello brother, when i watch your video I really hungry of your showing food
Reagan airport also has bens chili biwl
Unfortunately, many of the great international food is being pushed to the suburbs due to high rent.
Very true, but downtown Silver Spring might be the best spot because its an actual city with metro access and lots of good options.

Thank You for posting the links to more videos for further information, that is really cool. Salud!
You're welcome!
While popularized in DC the honor of inventing jumbo slices belongs to Koronet Pizza, a whole-in-the-wall pizzeria near Columbia University in NYC.
Visiting in August 22. Is it wrong to try them all? ;)
Nope 😀
Pupusas♥️🙌
Im a pupusa man myself
Good choice
The seasoning on the crabs looks more like JO #2, or a house season. Old Bay is too fine to steam crabs with...
that half smoke looks tasty.
It is.
More great advice from a local. Appreciate that it’s not just some generic BS.
Thanks, Alex.
Ok
Fish 🐟
Hot Dogs
I would recommend Half Smoke on Georgia Ave by Howard University and not just because I went to school with the owner ..
Ayssinia is near where I live.
And now you can buy mumbo sauce in stores and it was started by a black woman
I love We the Pizza!
Good pick!
I'm hungry
Same 😋

Mumbo sauce
Doesn't look like much to eat in DC thats sad
A black women made Mumbo in her house

Ben's Chili Bowl is overrated. It smelled like Clorox in there. So weird...
