  • This video contains spoilers! Watch at your own risk. Robert Eggers' recent film is an adaption of the iconic silent horror, Nosferatu. This movie has enjoyed critical acclaim, though it's somewhat divisive amongst viewers. I look into 2024's Nosferatu, and what I feel are its strengths and weaknesses.

People need to read Dracula. This is one of the best adaptations of that book that’s ever been made.

No, Eggers completely failed at developing Count Orlok as a character. That was the biggest flaw of this movie/adaptation. Many people don’t realize it but that is why the ending was so anticlimactic/disappointing.

I think it ran into the problem that pretty much all Dracula adaptations do (because this movie is essentially Dracula with a few cosmetic changes). Based on what all is in the book, we have a dramatic pacing and tonal shift halfway through, with it going from this slow burn creepy claustrophobic horror in the castle to the “Jason Takes Manhattan” phase where it opens up and everyone starts racing against the clock. While it works better in the book, it doesn’t port well to film IMO, and thus, the whole front half gets truncated and we are left feeling like meat was still on the bone. The two fixes are either (or both) doing multiple films, or radically adjusting that second/third act to something that is more in keeping with the tone of the first half. Just a thought

This movie is a masterpiece. People who complain about it have never seen a Robert Eggars film.

I have all of them and seen them countless times. This movie just wasn’t his best and he was at a disadvantage when not working on original projects. It really hindered his creativity and where he could have went with the story. His ability to create a playground of ideas and symbolism was on rails… and it shows. His love for the ip was too strong.

I’ve seen all Eggers movie and enjoyed them all. I especially liked The Witch. Northmen was fun too. But this movie was definitely not a masterpiece due to the ending and the huge flaw in Eggers’ version of Orlok.
This version of Orlok died in the most unconvincing/unbelievable/anticlimactic way possible. The 1979 version Orlok’s decision to self delete was much more believable, impactful, moving, and meaningful because his character was developed so well. Eggers’ version of Orlok was not the same creature and should have had a different death. This would have been a MASTERPIECE if Eggers let his creativity loose on the ending. But he kept it safe. Didn’t work.

I thought it was good & dont really care about the other movies by the director. It was a haunting, disturbing & entertaining movie. Good acting, beautiful Cinematography, costumes & setting. Escapism.

I think this movie speaks more to europeans than to americans with their short attention span. There are way better in depth reviews to find on this film on YT.
