Hey I really like this game.
AKSHUALLY, You THINK you do, but you DON'T
Because no one knows what players want more than the executives.
Pride, the 7th and Final sin, the thing that makes young companies over promise their small projects, and big companies blind to feedback from knowledgeable players.

I note that in a lot of arguments about pride, no one ever uses the word hubris. It really helps to distinguish between acceptable pride (being proud of your work), and unacceptable pride (refusing to accept criticism and assume whatever you make will automatically be popular with everyone).

because pride and hubris are slightly different things but mean much the same thing. when most people say pride, in these modern days, they are actually substituting it for joy. But maybe they are not because often when people are using it wrongly to express their joy it is often covering up the "unacceptable" pride.

I have to admit, you're right. When I first started to play Gw2 I was completely overwhelmed, too many features, too big of a game, esp as a casual player. But as someone coming from a very bad mmo (fiesta online) I was STUNNED about how good an mmo can be, so I started to concentrate on only one aspect of the game (pve and Map completion/ discovery) bc it was the easiest to understand and most enjoyable for me (the jumping puzzles conpletely sold the game for me, never had so much fun in an rpg environment) and as soon as I became comfortable I loved that I can experience all other aspects step by step in the same game, not having to play 3 Games for all features I enjoy. Gw2 does so much right for me, as an (to be fair) not very experienced gamer, but as someone who sticks completely loyal to very few Games all my live, gw2 seems to be simply the perfect match c:

I don't get why he describes GW2 as "wide as an ocean but deep as a puddle". It's open world system is clearly one of its strengths. Exploring the different layers of Maguuma Jungle, Jumping puzzles, OW-Event system, mountsystem, ... excels all other MMO on the market.
I mean, yeah, FF14's storytelling and craftingsystem is far better, Lotro's RP is superior and RuneScape OS's-Questing and skillsystem is unreached but that doesn't mean GW2 is shallow. GW2 has it flaws but surpasses all other MMOs in many ways.

@@roky7772 From my experience the type of player who really enjoys GW2's approach is more the sandbox player than the typical themepark fan. While others think it's directionless and there's too little linearity (progression), that is exactly what me and some others I know enjoyed about the game. But when I'm looking for an MMO I'm not typically looking for certain features it does best but for a world I can get lost in which offers a great variety of options. Otherwise I burn out too fast.

It's funny because I that over the years, GW2 has developed its own niche. It really does cater to players that love to run off and explore, and rewards them for it. One of my favorite things that keeps me coming back to it after all these years is that it's more about the journey than the destination- you log in planning to do one thing, accidentally run into a giant crowd waiting for that map's meta to start, and the next thing you know, you're all having a griffon car show or in the midst of a quaggan conga line to pass the time. The large map meta events really do bring this unique sense of community and spontaneity to the game and the community that I absolutely love.

yup and at the same time it has alienated people who enjoy doing hard dungeons and raids and such, I loved GW2 for awile played 1000 hours or so but once I had beaten all dungeons especially Arah how it was back then and got all the fractals of the mists items, they proceeded to never release any new content for me ever. just endless stories and zones to explore but no meaty content for me to do. I dont fault them for it its a great game if you like world bosses and exploring and all that but I wish it had some fun raids and dungeons for hardcore players like me.

If you are a new indie developer, I'd probably also advise against starting with an MMO as your first game. Start with something simpler, a story or mechanic that works well on a small scale, get used to both the practical and the business side of game development.
In other words, MMOs are the high level raids of game development. You need to start with killing 5 wolves in a generic forest first. Sure, it's not as fun, but you gotta do the grind to get the XP.

FFXIV too actually. Though less so in some areas. Gender locking isn't a thing in WoW though, or maybe I missed it. It is in FFXIV though, but they are changing that slowly.
I think you'll be hard pressed to find a single MMO that doesn't contain at least a few, but when it heavily exemplifies all 7, that's a problem.

    • @Cenebi
      @Cenebi 2 роки тому +18

@@vixxcelacea2778 Gender locking really *isn't* a thing in FF14 though? Not in a significant way in at least.
There's *one* race that doesn't have a female equivalent (I kinda wish they'd just decided that particular race does not have any sort of sexual dimorphism so the men and women are indistinguishable from each other, *or* clarified in lore than the race is a single gender race (so there *aren't* men and women), and like some of the starting equipment and that's basically it.
Like yes it's *present* but in a way that almost no one would even notice it outside if trying to do really specific things that almost never come up.
It certainly *used* to be a significant factor, but that's been almost entirely fixed over the last two expansions.
If you wanna apply that "sin" to FF14 a much better application is the fact that glamour (transmogrified) equipment can't be worn by other classes than what it was meant for. You can't wear Paladin equipment as glamour on your White Mage, for instance, despite it being a purely aesthetic choice. It's functionally the same "sin".
But at no point does FF14 actually restrict players *mechanical* choices and abilities based on their *aesthetic* choices.

I think gw2 does alot well enough. Better than most. The openworld system, combined with the metas, achievements and masteries are very straight forward easy to understand and even when you start out you can always take little goals and by providing more mastery point then neccessary it doesnt lock you out of completing it just because you may just dont want to do the xx conditional challenge locked in group content. It doesnt have the most complex combat, setting a low barrier of entry, but is also not too slow for me that you feel years passing between each action (FFXIV, was literally unplayable for me for that reason). Sure the combat System isnt nearly as exciting as tera's or BDO's, but one of those offers no content but the same dungeons over and over and the other one provides no challenging enemies to use that combat system for in pve, while the pvp is objectively garbage

@McFinnaPants Medicine is called medicine because it has been rigorously tested by various experiments and different people to try to eliminate biases or favored data. Said experiment has to be repeatable and end up with similar to the same results. It's often double blind to prevent placebo/nocebo bias and unconscious influence by administers. It also usually has a decent sample size, like a couple thousand people of various ages and different sexes, often trying to eliminate possible confounders like illness, specific allergies etc to evaluate the new medicines use.
Essential oils have not been rigorously tested like this. They don't show great efficacy. Same with lots of homeopathic, natural or alternative medicines. I think people don't value just how much testing and scientific rigor goes into literally anything being approved.
I could use fluffy stuffed animals in conjunction with medicine and it would have the same effect as drinking water, using essential oils or anything else. Placebo is a lot stronger than people think. If I think it will help, it often will. This is why experiments are designed to eliminate placebo affect as much as possible.
Also, essential oils can be dangerous. The concentrated amount can cause skin irritation and for many animals in the home, they are outright dangerous. Appeal to nature kills a lot of pets and hurts a lot of people and I am so sick of people assuming that orange oil or something similar is fine because it comes from nature. Uranium is natural, poison is natural, cancer is natural. Not everything in nature is there to help or even be useful to us. It's a deadly fallacy that so many companies take to the bank.

The statement made was a simplification, there's usually a hand full of necessities or combine features most games need, but the focus of the games scope probably needs to be limited. It's an obvious folly for a weak developer to take on more than they can achieve, not so much numerous features that actively makes a game worse. I'm sure tons of players and developers wish their MMO had more highlights, but if they can't excel in any way than you have a lot of mediocre features.
Personally, I wish for a combination of mechanics which multiply to to become something greater than the separate parts in a game, so this one is particularly disappointing. But you can see tons of aspiring MMOs, even major productions, fail due to poor scope and lack of focus.

    a) maybe an epilogue of this "deadly sins" series reaping inspiration from Dante's 9 circles. Now, I say it'd be an epilogue considering only three new videos would emerge out of it, but would nonetheless be just as fascinating to listen to your thoughts on treacherous, fraudulent, and heretical (the last one is a challenge, no doubt, but I'm pretty sure you'd be one for the challenge considering this series) game design in MMOs.
    b) If you haven't considered it yet, it would be such a joy if you could pick up a counterpart to all this series revolving around the 7 cardinal virtues also crystalized in MMO development. Intuitively, it would probably be another beast to tackle altogether, but you may enjoy it's production considering the amount of care put into this 7 video series.

This is exactly what I tried to avoid when I was making my own TTRPG setting. I know I am not a highly experienced fantasy writer, nor a well seasoned DM. I also could not be bothered to write up an entire novel's worth of history, lore, locations, etc.
All I wanted was a spaghetti western, but with high fantasy elements. A simple, yet whacky world where I could honestly throw anything at the players, and it would make sense. A world with a basic, novel concept of what happens to a high fantasy world when you start modernizing it.
Magic is now heavily corporatized, industrialized and intertwine with technology. Everyone and their mother has swapped out their crossbow for a much better firearm. (and bows are only used by hippies and hipsters.) Quests often come in the form of highly dangerous temp work for various nations and corporations. And most of the world has already been explored, documented, and claimed, leaving only the final frontier left... It is essentially the sunset of an age of adventuring and discovery.

The strength and focus of GW2 is convenience, cooperation, and a kick ass combat system. You can do anything at any time and at any pace. If you are trying to progress in one part of the game. Play a different part can still contribute to your original goal.
At the quick glance GW2 feels shallow like a puddle, but everyone who tries it calls it Home. You visit your parents once in a while and sleep in your old bedroom. It feels great and nice, but eventually get bored and leave. However you still happy that it's there in the background, knowing you can revisit, and knowing that you aren't totally screwed and can pick up right where you left off on equal level with the rest of the players. We're always happy when you come back and bittersweet when you go. It's not a "goodbye" but "happy trails, until we meet again."

    • @DarkThagan
      @DarkThagan 3 роки тому +13

I think he completely missed the mark on that one. GW2 is not a shallow game, not as a whole. You don't need insane depth in your systems for a game to be good. Terra has one of the best combat in the genre, but it got nothing else and that's why it lost the majority of its playerbase very very fast. There's nothing more to it than PvP and dungeons. And even that doesn't have much of a depth TBH. GW2 is amongst the top dogs in MMO genre, so its existence negates this narrative. ArcheAge would also be big if not for awful monetization and that game is fairly competent in many aspects but doesn't excel in any. Non-MMO games follow the same trend. Take Valheim for example since it's rather popular right now. It has combat, exploration, crafting, building, boss hunting and non of it is super deep or amazingly done but as a whole, it is a charming little game. Games are more than the sum of their parts.
Also, you have just described most of the MMOs, WoW included. I don't play WoW, but plenty of my friends do and they always take breaks between content drops.

The thing is though, that's the community, not the game.
I think josh approached this in the wrong way, in the sense that he didnt mention how sins can overlap with eachother. It's kind of pride's thing, it can make other sins far worse if not create them outright. I think gw2 is a good example. This idea of an everygame can overlap with gluttony, that being feature creep. Theres so many systems, so many parts of the game, that it eventually leads to either some features being forgotten or very few features getting any real changes.
This leads to one of the games biggest problems that is frequently talked about; the lack of proper endgame content for returning players. If you want pve, you get 5 hours of content and time gated shenanigans every few months in the form of living world, and maybe more in the form of an expansion every two years. If you want raids or other forms of that, you'll hopefully get one or two every few months. Pvp or wvw player? Sucks to be you, cause they barely get updated at all, aside from the occasional skills and such.
Now take a look at world of warcraft, they have a main focus, being the more competitive side of adventuring. Every few months or so, (although I haven't played WoW I dont know the exact update schedule) they have a new thing for those players to do, whether it be a raid or items to get. And because they have few things to focus on, that let's them put more content into that part so that demographic can enjoy the game more. Theres alot to say about WoW, but lacking in content isnt one of those things, atleast from a raw sense. Don't say that Gw2 has a small team behind it or similar because the first guild wars provided a great amount of content as well. And I'd also consider that a more casual mmo.
Theres many other ways pride overlaps with other sins, but I dont have the time to go into anymore of that.
Keep in mind, I'm saying this as a player myself. Gw2 has fostered a great community away from the hardcore players of other mmo's, and that's awesome. I would almost go as far to say a game like this is nessasary In our current landscape, not being so small or big that it only attracts toxic people. But these problems do exist, theres not much any community can do to drive away those issues.

Guildwars 2: I agree that it has a little of everything. But it does excel at a few things: Fashion, Mounts, and Story. I don't know of a better MMO for fashion. GW2 has armor that you can keep the stats of while completely changing the look (skin) of as well as being able to dye from over 400 colors (some color variants are shiny versions of a different color). The second thing that GW2 does really well is mounts. They have 7 different mount types that each do different things. The Springer (like a giant rabbit) can jump really high. The Beatle can roll really fast like a race car. And the Skyscale is essentially a mini dragon. But unlike the "dragon" mounts in other games, GW2 mounts can change their looks (skins) AND are dyeable. The story isn't quite as awesome as the first 2 on my list, but it is generally good and has some really great sections.

I think GW2 is a bad example you mentioned.
It is VERY DIFFICULT to produce a game with real horizontal progression without expanding its content to every areas.
Since the driving force is not to be stronger than anyone like in other mmo, GW2 has to use other means to keep players attention.
Thus all those different system for everyone to choose what they enjoy/ want to do.
Ofc GW2 has reach a stallment like most other small ~ medium MMO nowadays, but it still keep its casual fanbase for those who doesn't want to compete/ race against who being the strongest.

I was a little slow but finally got around to watching all 7 sins of MMO design. Really amazing job on these.
The game I play has some elements of the sins for sure and everything could always be better I guess but I still love it more than any other MMO I've experienced. (Which is quite a lot of them including nearly all the most popular ones.)
Lust: Gender locked completely playing as preset story characters.
Gluttony: Very minimal amount. Some stuff becomes outdated but it's been getting better about this.
Greed: Not really. p2w sort of possible and that can be rough but the main reason I play is because f2p is a great option unlike in other games I've played. Not that I mind paying to support the devs I'd be willing to buy cosmetics but I don't want to try to p2w.
Sloth: Kind of daily and weekly quest level of time gating and an honorable mention for a fake limit on how much you can play that was relevant when the game was new.
Wrath: Definitely forces you to play with others in raids and to some extent forces pvp players to pve. Ouch wish this was different.
Envy: Some level of limited cosmetics. Pretty annoying like you said. Some things you just can't get anymore. There are even unique and moderately complex model animations unused anywhere else in the game that were given out for things like being online during the game's anniversary, such as one where your character jumps on a trampoline.
Pride: Some players feel ignored but listening to everyone is also impossible. I've seen proof of the devs listening and also as a more experienced player it just feels like the changes made align with what changes I feel are good or needed.
I tried to make a list with the sins to criticize what I could. Some sins are more present than others. Definitely not a game for everyone but I think it's overall really good and high quality despite having some flaws.

Man, this series was so good. You brought up pretty much every major problem that mmos have and need to work on, and in a way that makes it easy to understand and show to others. Thank you so much!!
I will say one thing though, is that the idea that you can -only- have an MMO that does -one- type of gameplay really well, or an MMO that does a lot of things poorly, is a false dichotomy. Yes, that ends up happening a lot because the people who make the lackluster “jack of all trades” MMOs aren’t fully understanding what people want from diversity of gameplay to begin with. There is a largely untapped audience craving an MMO world that allows them to explore different paths in the same world with different gameplay loops that are fully developed but still connect back to each other and let them experience the same world with other people in different ways. That is the ONLY thing that an MMO can offer that other genres simply cannot by definition, yet it’s never been fully explored by people who actually understand this concept or what you can do with it. A game will succeed in this when players can experience something akin to sonder while playing the game. I understand there are development and technological limitations, so I’m not pushing for an all out crazy simulation. The way to provide this experience isn’t to let players do -anything- and -everything-. But there’s definitely another option that’s not “everything but bad” vs “only one thing but good”

You've probably seen me comment about making my game before. I just want to say. I'm fully aware of what it's going to take to make it a reality. 10+ years of development most likely, and at some point during that process, likely 5 years or so from now when I have the base systems worked out and a prototype to present that we can verify is FUN to play, I will have to be hiring a full team of people to work on the art, gear, balance and other small mechanics. Additionally I plan to work on other games in the meantime to sharpen my dev skills, and slowly work on the core of my MMO in the meantime as that is my ultimate long-term goal. The core gameplay loop being fun is the most important part, so my goal for MYSELF is to work solely on that aspect of it. I've seen a lot of developers move outward horizontally working early on maps, story, art, ect. Which is honestly a waste of time because if the core of the game isn't fun, then you could have the best map in the world or the best story in the world and the game is still going to be shite. I don't want my game to have EVERYTHING. But I do want it to have a lot. Some devs are putting time into things that just aren't priorities for me. I like the quote from your mentor about wide as the ocean deep as a puddle. But I think as we both know, you have to take into account that MMOs are almost the "theme park" of gaming. They have many systems that are not always necessary such as the pet battles in WoW. I don't think it's always a bad thing to say "I want my game to include all these good aspects from such and such games". These other games are the things that inspire me, so I think its only natural to take things from them and refine them. By "refine" what I really mean is making these systems DEEPER. Deep as the ocean. See my main problem I have found from playing MMOs my whole life is a lack of depth and also the problem of some games with depth being SO convoluted and confusing that an average person, a main stream person, could have no hope of ever understanding the system. But depth doesn't have to be confusing and a lot of it is in the presentation of the systems. I have always felt boxed in in an MMO. They don't let me play by my own rules. If I want to play a certain way? OH nope, CANT because its unviable, or inefficient, or straight up not in the game. I think this problem stems from a lot of different places, but a main one in my mind is just developers making content too much for the high end of the playerbase. (Which might I add is counterproductive to the growth of the game and new players coming in.) Would more groups in WoW take "meme" specs with them to raids if it didn't really matter as much how much dps you're doing or if the content was easy enough that you didn't need to be completely top end to clear it? I think so. I think this is from an overreliance in many MMOs of basically just "who has the biggest dick" or "who has the biggest number" or "who got that random roll on a super rare piece of gear". Rather than, "who is properly executing the mechanics" or something else along those lines, and I just believe that to be bad game design. Honestly I could keep going all day long but I'm tired of typing lol. So I'll just leave you with this. There's a lot I want to be IN the game, so I won't list it all here. But essentially I want my MMO to be WoW with, more variety, realistic graphics, more options for the player (such as being a battlemage, or a melee ranger hybrid, I think PoE the ARPG does a lot of this very well as you can be a warrior that does fire attacks or a ranger that does ice attacks), more fleshed out guild mechanics, more diverse, interesting, and immersive raids like the raids in Destiny, INNs actually having a PURPOSE, a better crafting system, better UI, rings and necklaces that ACTUALLY have models, a PvP and Raid ranking system that actually tracks things BESIDES just the damage you deal based on your role (ie. did you dispell during the time when your group needed you to despell). And honestly, so much more, but I am aware when I'm creating these ideas of systems becoming too complex or convoluted, and I stop myself and say "WHY does this need to be complex", and if there's not a good reason, then I don't do it. It will not have player housing, it will not have full action combat, it will not have CONFUSING stats like Haste, versatility, mastery, and resilience, it will not exclude players from content based on RNG or chance, and other things I will not be wasting precious time on. FUCK that was long. I'm always running ideas by friends and by people like yourself to get an idea of what people think of the ideas. They don't always love them and I take that into account. But yea. I'm done now lol, cheers man.

That said, “Jack of all trades,” is still arguably a niche, so if you want to make a good Jack of all Trades game you’ll have to be better than the others in that niche, and I’d argue that succeeding requires more experience and talent than games focusing on one thing, so it’s probably even worse for beginners.

I don't understand how having multiple modes at the same time can be defined as a problem in an mmorpg.
It should be obvious to all gamers that in today's society it is difficult (if not impossible) to have the time to play multiple mmorpg at the same time.
The mmorpg is a product that consumes a lot of game time and getting stuck into a product that only does one thing well while the rest is non-existent is becoming increasingly wrong.
Anyone who doesn't think so is probably living in a truly "fantasy world".

@@JoshStrifeHayes Although I obviously respect your opinion I personally don't find it correct at all.

@@NikeGipple I'd like to interject here for a moment after having watched both this video and the one you've linked because I think this is more or less just a difference in mindset.
If you want to find exactly one game to play and you do not like to have 10, 20 or however many different games installed to bounce between, yet also get enjoyment from a wide variety of different activities than it is completely understandable that you would get more enjoyment from something that offers decent content in a wide variety of areas.
However in stark contrast to that with myself as an example love engaging fast fluid action combat that is NOT pvp yet is deep enough that a players personal skill is a defining factor of how good they are/can be at the game just as much if not more than there time invested. I also greatly enjoy in depth numerical systems and enjoy spilling over spreadsheets and figuring out new plans stratagems or setups on my own. with this in mind Monster Hunter is the single greatest franchise that gaming has ever seen in MY opinion and while waiting for the new one to launch not a single other game that I haven't played to death will scratch that itch and any game that offers less than an MH game in either of those two categories is strictly worse and not worth my personal time regardless of how good anything else in them is.
So really I think both sides are correct and it all comes down to a matter of perspective and values/wants.

My most memorable developer sin of pride experience was with Everquest, back in its early days. Players told the devs that mobs don't inherently dual wield. Devs said that the players were wrong, and mobs totally do. Well, turns out, players were right. Unless given weapons, mobs don't dual wield. And because of that, mages had crappy pets for a long time, until finally the devs realized that they were wrong, and mages were given the ability to summon weapons for their pets (because for some reason, it wasn't possible to make mobs dual wield as was apparently originally intended). Necros, meanwhile, did great, as did enchanters, because they could give their pets weapons. Certain enemies that spawned with weapons could be super deadly if they had two of them, suddenly doing a lot more damage than if they spawned without them. And, of course, you could charm mobs to control them, then arm them, resulting in crazy high damage potential (and the fun of leaving them afterwards for other players to get experience).
So yeah, lots of balance issues because the devs couldn't be bothered to run a simple test like the experienced players were telling them to, and just insisted that they were right and the players were wrong.
That said, part of why this prideful attitude exists is because players often don't want what they say they want. That doesn't mean players are wrong about there being a problem. They typically aren't. But the players might often complain about a symptom, rather than the underlying cause. Likewise, players might want something, like the ability to create their own dungeons, but if you give it to them, it can be very harmful to your game, because players will focus on maximizing xp, turning things into a boring grindfest (like what happened with City of Heroes). So devs shouldn't ignore what players say, but they also shouldn't take them verbatim. They need to think and analyze the situation carefully.

If you're not feeling like doing dungeons one week, then that's fine! Your point about focusing on what a game does well is very correct and I agree whole-heartedly, but there's absolutely space for games that have a broader but shallower scope.

This is one of the things I like about EVE. We have a Council of Stellar Management that is elected every year. They are elected by the players of the game, and represent them in meetings with CCP. They even fly to Reikjavic, Iceland for meetings with the devs. There has always been a back-and-forth between the devs and the players. While many may not like everything they do, the players are kept in the loop about design decisions. More games should have this. It not only lets the devs know what the players want firsthand; it lets the players know what the devs are dealing with, and what they are working with.
