there is a different snare sound on every song on the album. i like it on all the songs, but this song has probably the 'best' and most 'normal' sounding snare sound out of all the songs on the album

It fits the songs, all those rerecordings with a normal snare just doesnt feel the same. The St Anger snare fits the aggression anger and brutality of the album

IMO St. Anger was a therapy album that save Metallica because every band member can freely express their feelings and let the anger out.

I literally don't get it why everyone hate st. anger so much? I mean yes it is some weirdo shit with a trash can on a snare drum, but it is so brutal and heavy.
I think the biggest thing is that the songs are mostly way longer than they should be (which tbh is an issue on most of the 'classic' Metallica albums too), a lot of the lyrics are extremely goofy, and the songwriting feels a bit worse all around even if there's some genuinely good elements. The production decisions made, aside from the infamous snare, also don't do it a ton of favors imo; it comes off as a super rough demo-level vocal performance from James and the guitar tones are kinda stuffy. If you like that rawness then obv it's personal taste but I think a lot of people don't, at least not on a Metallica album.

For all the shit the production gets I think it still sounds much better than their last two albums. At least it has some beefiness and character, the last two albums sound wafer thin and lifeless, and it really brings their inconsistent performance to the forefront. At least on St Anger their old age sloppiness meshes acceptably. I never liked St Anger but I don't think I ever gave it a truly fair chance. It's on my bucket list.
