My favourite is always the 25-watt G12 M Greenback - in a single configuration for recording, and in one or two stacked 4x12 cabinets for live - and both in a closed-back cabinet - for the deepest, tightest and crunchiest sound possible. 🔊🎶💎
My choice has probably always been the H 75Hz for its extra bite to cut through the mix or a darker amp and tight bass response with higher gain. The classic M greenback is a great all-rounder too...
@alecalfaras5936 Great speakers! Both made in the US though, which makes the logistics of getting them in UK made cabs tricky. Shipping heavy speakers across the ocean ain't cheap, especially if you don't want them sitting in hot and humid containers for weeks on end. It's far less expensive (and carbon footprint friendly) for them to load their cabs with domestically made speakers.
@@alecalfaras5936 they're not greenbacks though, greenbacks are made by Celestion. We've got plenty of recordings of the Green beret, we'll be putting some out soon. Mojo don't reply to our emails so I'm not that fussed about paying to do their promo. I've had them in the studio, they seemed fine.
I've been using G12M Greenbacks exclusively since 1974 with Hiwatts, Marshalls, Vox and Fenders. They oretty much do what i want with everything. Just go back and forth with cab designs - closed, open, 2x12, 4x12, 1x12 combo - they have you covered in my book. I love 'em!
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for sharing it. I really do like greenbacks, especially for recording. What I found so surprising - which this video demonstrates excellently - is how different the models sound, and how they compliment each other when used together. I have a 20 watt version (the recently-discontinued one, which is supposed to be the same as the EVH version...? Now I'm not so sure!) in one of your closed-back 1x12 cabs in my home studio, and another open-back 1x12 with the current 25-watt G12M. The smoother 20-watt speaker works well with the brighter 25-watt version. It's definitely worth experimenting!
I liked the M67 the best in this video. It has the most balanced mid-range of the 5 with a harshness in the hi-mids that you could EQ out relatively easily.
Loving your content! Can I make a recommendation? Give the lads at That Pedal Show a shout about doing some sort of cab deep dive. For example, I know they are fans of Zilla and 1x12 cabs. You could do a show “selecting the right 1x12 cab for you” and feature same speaker but different cab size/designs, ported, etc, and the equivalent but in open back. Good marketing for you guys and I think it would be insightful and great to see you guys in the pedal shed.
haha thanks mate, I'm trying to get them involved in something really cool... it's not quite as sensible and useful as your video, its pretty stupid actually but we are also working on some more informative stuff like that. I tell you what, it would be really helpful if you recommend it to them, give them a nudge ;)
And thinking more about this I’m actually really curious what it would sound like in a wet-dry set up, using an open back cab for the wet and a closed back for the dry gain tones. I bet that would be awesome
I'd like to see a video with a Blackback in addition to those 5. Personally, I've rotated '78 Blackback, '16 G12M, and EVH speakers in my 1960A cab over the last decade. EVH seems a little too dark, G12M sits very nice, but the Blackback is just on another level of warmth and sizzle.
I've got '76 G12M 55Hz Blackbacks and they've got their own thing, like you said "warmth and sizzle". One is included in a comparison video here on YT but unfortunately I found out later that the speaker has cone rub! So the sound clips of the speaker is "corrupt".
@ZillaCabs Ah, good to know! I think an SM57 on the 67 cone of axis and a Beyer M160 placed further back of the cab would give a good representation of both in a 4x12. What do you think?
A lot of people liked that one in this video. It's a speaker Celestion don't make any more. It is or was a reissue of the older 20 watt greenbacks from the 60s.... 1967 I guess.
Discontinued heritage series supposing a recreation of a 1967 Greenback. I do have one and its better than the classics, more refined and softer rounder tone.
As always we get another excellent video! Now I am sad I do not have M67 in house :( It has that structure/texture and details like no other. Better top end than standard M 25W. EVH sounded darker as I remember, but it was still very nice. I bet it fits good amplifiers very good. Standard M 25W is just what it is and what I remember in last like 20 years. I have always loved H models. In old once I loved 55Hz and in Heritage series H75. To be honest I do not miss them so much because Creamback H is doing great job as well. So, Celestion, seriously, you leave some speakers in the program and you take out Heritage series Greenbacks? You leave us hanging for so long :(
Thanks mate, I'm glad you like it. I like all those speakers, different speakers for different jobs I guess. Thanks as always for watching and for the kind words.
This would be a great sound test except the loop your using changes. Loops are perfect but make sure you use the same riff loop for each speaker. You can change the riff but it has to be the same riff for each speaker. You have 5 speakers make sure it's the same riff across all 5 speakers before you change to a new riff.
It's more about vibe, if we use the same loop we get told there is no heart. That's the cool thing about youtube, whatever you do someone will think its wrong or there is a better way of doing it. Using a loop five time would be relatively jaring to most people and I promise you we'd be getting told there was no progression in the track.
I am a Sabbath freak and am looking for the most massive sound , now in my orange 412 i put the H 55hz on the bottom row and the g12 65 on the top row , its sounds great but the 65s seem to steal the sound of the greenbacks , i heard your advice to match the Ms with the Hs , i want to try it , do you do x or keep the Hs on the bottom for more boom/bottom end?
I got my hands on a pulsonic 71 m, i want to mix it with another speaker in a 2x12. I have a g12h30 55hz but am concerned it may takeaway from the pulsonic m. Thoughts 🤔?. Chase down another pulsonic or irc, or heritage m or go alnico blue ect 🤦
That's a really tough one. Some would say hunt another one down but its hard to find two speakers from that era that will sound the same after 50 years. Put the H in there to see what happens if you already have it, but I imagine it will be a good bit louder. Let us know how you got on.
Gotta order another 212 cab, loaded with V30's, from Thomann.$249+$116 for international shipping. So $365 total, shipped to my door from Germany. Hard to beat that deal. Yeah, it's a Chinese cab with Chinese Celestion Vintage30's. But at that price, how can I complain? I need to have that option available, for modern mid scooped tones. The chugga chugga's!
@@ZillaCabs I'm not ordering it for the cab, and it ends up costing about $50 bucks. So I'm pretty sure it's worth that meager outlay. I'm in total agreement about good cabinets being worth it. I've got good cabs, and just need 2 V30's and a cheap bang around cab to have around.
@zillacabs No Mojotone bv25-m? No WGS Green beret? No WGS Invader? Scumback? Eminence private jack? Tonespeak? Weber 1225? Maybe an older vintage celestion greenback? Many more GB style speakers out there too now, most of which are not very well documented online. They aren't Celestion greenbacks though. We've got tons of speakers and we'll be putting videos up. The trouble is, most of our videos come from our r+d, so sound samples we already have mostly from cab design work etc. With the exception of WGS non of those other companies have any interest in dealing with us, they don;t respond to emails, which leaves us with having to go and by the speakers from shops. We spend a lot of time and money on the videos so I'm not that intersted in promoting brands like that.... also, with a few exceptions, the greenback type speakers generally don't sound that good. When it comes to 3 hour videos, we don't really have the time, and the retention is super low. It's so time consuming making videos with any quality. People generally aren't interested and speakers are niche for some reason. At the end of the day, there's a lot of effort put in to the videos and if companies can't even be bothered to respond to us I'm not that interested in promoting their stuff..... and I don;t want to talk brands down either, which is another reason to avoid a few of those brands.
How do you mean out of context? Very few things make sense out of context. Do you mean in a band mix? Generally you listen to a guitar sound before you put it in a band mix though right? It's to be used as a tool for someone to hear the difference between the five speakers keeping as many other variables the same. These videos aren't there to tell people what is what, they are there to provide people with the tool to help decide. Besides the majority of players spend their time playing away from a band. These videos are for people who can use them and if people don't find them useful that's fine.
I'd hardly say looking at the thing that converts an electrical signal to the pressure waves that you hear is cork sniffing. They are five very different sounding speakers.
Which is your favourite Greenback and why??
Easy: WGS Green Berets or Mojotone BV25-m (both of which have NEVER been in any @zillacabs video to my knowledge!)
