I've read both "The Homecoming" and "Spencer's Mountain". Both are about a family named Spencer who lived in Virginia in the 1930's. The books are similar for the most part, but they differ in various details. In both books. Clay Spencer was the father, and he worked at a soapstone quarry in the fictional community of New Dominion, which was based on Earl Hamner's hometown of Schuyler, Virginia. In "The Homecoming", there were eight children, as there were in Hamner's real-life family. In "Spencer's Mountain", there were nine children. The youngest was a baby boy named Donnie. Later in the book, Olivia gave birth to twins named Franklin and Eleanor, and that brought the total to eleven. Both books featured two spinster sisters who made a concoction called "the recipe", but they were much less sophisticated than the Baldwin ladies. They usually wore overalls when they made their brew. One big difference between the books and the TV series was that the series (as far as I can remember) never featured Olivia's parents. In the books, they lived in the same community as the family, and their last name was Italiano. Since Olivia's father was of Italian ancestry, that would have made for some interesting story lines, especially during the war years!
Thanks for this info, citizenken. The twins’ names certainly points to how grateful the majority of citizens were for FDR’s inventive programs, saving countless lives through The Depression and beyond. The fictional choice may say something, too, about Earl Hamner’s feelings of tribute. It’s a lovely tribute from you for Mr. Hamner that you shared some about his books here and in honor of his 100th year.
@@peaceshepherding529 According to the book, Clay Spencer would not accept the WPA food that the government was handing out. That was true of many rural people during the Depression, including my own grandfather.
@@citizenken7069 Yes. Yet the programs, you may know, extended far beyond food, including widespread work (from repairing and building infrastructure to artists being employed to document life and beautify federal structures), to training and more. As was shown in The Waltons series, with a majority of the U.S. population then living in rural areas most people grew much or all of their own food, and many urban dwellers frequently had backyard or communal city plots, so many people fortunately had some access to food. (In The Waltons’ example, that family had enough food they grew in many cases they could have others stay with &/or eat with them.) But the lack of jobs, shelter (supports & securities for shelter), education, health care…. these would continue to collapse & destroy lives without federal protections and innovations. (You can tell, in my view this country has heavily been sold the idea that business is the “be all, end all” of what makes this country. But I think business’ limits are clear and there have to be unifying efforts to address many areas of life for life to be sustained and to improve - areas that business doesn’t address. Plus, business, like people’s circumstances, ebbs and flows too, and sometimes fails due to unforeseen hardships. Like your Grandfather, I believe most people still try to do everything possible to build and rebuild all they can through their own capacities. To me this is why supports beyond commerce work, because the prevailing spirit of people is to be ethical, not only endure but grow and to be part of a community - community giving and receiving. I’m thankful for your giving and receiving in this community too. If only Earl Hamner, Jr., knew how what inspired him and the ripples he created kept extending to hearten others.
@@peaceshepherding529 Today we've gone to the opposite extreme, and people look to the government to solve all their problems. People in the Great Depression wanted work, not a handout. Most people I knew who lived through who lived through the Depression tried to avoid going into debt. People today want the government to pay their debts. I think that's a much more dangerous mentality. Government money always comes with strings attached. Besides, what happens when the government runs out of money?
Thanks, Judy, for sharing like you have done with your channel. This takes time, effort and planning, and it is obvious you enjoy it. Your love for what you have done shines through! The expanded information about The Walton’s sharpens our understanding and appreciation for this authentic slice of Americana. It is as good a place of facts about American history as the Library of Congress. And that is due in large part because of Judy’s efforts. 😇
@@judynorton2598 you are welcome, I decided to spare you any flirtatious remarks this week since you do so much to connect people to a greater understanding of the Waltons.

Hi Judy, this show has always been phenomenal-A+! I enjoyed this segment too. The statue of Earl is great. Love from your longtime fan way up here in Alaska! Happy 2024!😊
So many wholesome family shows in the late 70's & 80's we as a family enjoyed watching. Unfortunately, today's shows are not up to those standards. Thank you it's been interesting for your insight on behind the scenes of The Walton's . May you be Blessed in the New Year with Health, Happiness and Wealth.
Thanks Judy for your Webb site I love watching it, I used to watch the Walton’s in the 70s and now I watch it every day, sometimes I wish I lived there because every one took care of each other the way I should be. Thank you so much 🤩
I would like to wish you and all of the cast that you talked to a happy and healthy 2024. You all deserve to get some sort of award for your efforts. Keep up the good work and I will continue to watch your BTS and ask Judy segments.
Well, I for one am super glad you decided to do a Walton Channell. It's also nice, and rare, that a person we as kids watched on TV interact with us. You hold a special place in our hearts as Mary Ellen, Judy so, thank you! And Happy New Year.
Judy, I'm sure that you hear this all of the time. The Waltons was much more than just a television show to me! You were family! There was so much to love and admire about the characters. The only other time that I have been so affected and drawn in was for Downton Abbey!!!
Love your Ask Judy videos!!!! Just a bit of house keeping as you are reading a question for a fan about Spencers Mountain. The person writes the Movie was made in the 40's but actually it was 1963.
First off, thank you so much for all of these behind the scenes. Secondly, to correct the womam commenting on Spencer's Mountain, it was set in the '60's. And lastly, are you surprised at how popular the Waltons has remained after all of these years and how many fan show up to your events.
I have wanted to know the answer to the question you asked Judy about what she mightve asked Earl Hamner because each time we watch an episode they are all SO exceptional. Were the characters and their storylines fictionalized or genuine? Very good question. Thank you for asking it.
Thank you so much for what you offer on UA-cam for all your loyal fans! I grew up watchng the Waltons and I am about Erin's (Mary's) age today. My children were also raised on the Walton's due to my love of the series. My question to you is: I have seen lots of episodes of other tv shows where they show some of the bloopers. Is it possible to see some of those here or have someone as a guest that has access to them? It just allows some of your fans to see the cast as real people. I think it could make for a fun segment on your show! Thank you for all you do!
We didn’t have those sorts of bloopers when we were filming. We had mistakes in scenes and intentional pranks. But it was all on film and we only saw an edit of these for fun at our show’s Christmas party. No one ever had copies of it.
The movie "Spencers Mountain" was made in 1963, based on the 1961 book, written by Earl Hamner, Jr. You said it was made in the 40's, Judy, during your review of the movie during the first part of this episode. I first watched it on TV years ago, because in 1963 I was only 6 years old and it was probably a little too mature in theme for me to understand. But by the time it made it to the small screen that was no longer the case! I enjoyed it very much, and have continued enjoying it anytime it's on. I also made the connection from the movie to The Waltons not long after the TV show came on. I also enjoy your show very much, even during the strike, when we got to share aspects of your life and some of the other folks from the show, like Michael! Love all of it! Thanks for everything you do for us! And I still remember that you remembered a request that another viewer and I requested that you show us the wedding band you wore on the show from when Mary Ellen married Curt! I still appreciate you doing that! Thanks! Shari D.
Spencers Mountain. I remember watching the move back in the "60"s. A good movie. I sure am glad that you do these. I love learning it all. Happy New Year to you and all your familys.
I haven’t seen Spencer’s mountain in many years but I seem to remember the Walton’s being mentioned once. Something about the Waltons over the mountain or something
Again Judy, THANK YOU for all these segments about our much-loved characters. You have also taught us a lot about the technical parts of the show and filming in general. This really makes me appreciate all that is done by those in front of and behind the camera for our entertainment. And then there's all that it takes to do a UA-cam video on whatever you discuss. . . Let's just say I'm overwhelmed by what it takes for any type of video entertainment.
Fun information on behind the scenes. Thank you for showing us one more movie to add to the must watch list. I must compliment you on your choice in colours for this video 🍻
I have been watching the whole series lately on Prime. Growing up watching the show every week, its so great to have the technology to relive memories. Families dont pop popcorn, and gather to watch shows like we once did. These back stories, are a wonderful addition. Thank You!!
@judynorton2598 what's amazing is 50 years later, Mary Ellen Walton is replying to my comment on a computer, who would have ever imagined.. 😆. Made my day!!

Great questions today and fascinating answers! Boy! You all had to be "quick on your feet" to film with very little if any rehearsal! Impressive indeed! What a wonderful tribute and memorial statue of Mr Hamner! He certainly put Schuyler, VA on the map! I think it was a real lucky stroke to had to have changed the characters' names! I read Spencer's Mountain after becoming a Walton's fan, so perhaps I was biased about the names. Clay Boy ~ while certainly apropos for the era and setting, just didnt have the same warmth and universality of JohnBoy. With the exception of possibly Patty Cake, for me ~ that holds true for all the names ~ Zebulon and Esther in particular! But, Kami is such a darling already, pointing out her cuteness with a sweetie name is unnecessary and even undercuts a bit. Whereas this tiny child with the most dignified and classic name ~™ Elizabeth works just right somehow! Especially, it gives the brothers and sisters the chance to then address her with pet names ~ honey, sweetie, etc. You've added so much to the lives of us Walton's fans with your videos, Judy. I already was an extremely devoted fan ~ as most people here! But, having the chance to ask you and the cast questions and converse with you continues to be a real treat! I would love the chance to visit Schuyler one more time and drive along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Time does not dim the charm of The Walton's nor Earl's beloved mountains! Bless you, Judy, and Walton's everywhere! Thank you for everything! ❤
My sense is that Earl thoroughly loved writing, and would use as much poetic license in creating a good yarn as in using factual material from his family life. I think about the few Twilight Zone episodes he did which were clearly fictional. Of course he didn't let on, but growing up in a large family provided a lot of material on which to draw.
What a lovely tribute that you all made to Earl Hamner jr. The Waltons was such a lovely endearing show, and you all gave of yourselves to make that show what it was. And it's still touching lives all of these years later. I know it's something you all are just so very proud of.❤
Morning Judy, hope your Christmas went well. Wow reminds me of the episode where John Boy was writing about the Baldwin, but in talking with Olivia had to change it from sisters to mother and daughter. Aldo is the name Spencer related from the late Princess Dianna formerly known as Lady Dianna Spencer? Amazing on how Earl Hamner would be 100 in Memory of him, a great writer of spiritual moral stories.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤you and how you explain how things went
Judy, I am so very happy that you thought of doing “Behind the Scenes with Judy Norton” twice a week for the last 3 years. It gives me something to look forward to and you always tell us new things about The Waltons. Thanks again from Mary Melanson
How wonderful that Earl has been honored in that way! Just think of ALL the people around the world whose lives he has impacted! Yes, I wonder also about what stories were true, true but embellished or totally Earl's imagination...no matter what...the stories and characters live on and I always think of them as "real!" I am so glad that you are still continuing on with this channel even when I'm sure your time is not as free anymore.❤ I love ALL the different episodes you share with us...a little bit of everything! Judy, seeing the statue of Earl Hamner makes me think of an older member of the community who has always been there and that anyone (children and adults) could come to him, sit down with him, and have a heart to heart conversation with him. And the person talking with Earl would feel loved and cared for by Earl. This also makes me think of Zeb Walton. Oh how I miss him, and Grandma, and Daddy, and Momma. I guess it is time to watch all of the Waltons episodes all over again.
makes sense mr hamner would base upon real people but switch few things around. I've found few similarities between the walton family & my relatives. thanks for video.
Hi Judy, I'm loving the behind the scenes of the Waltons, with you..I love the Waltons alot..i have the theme song, as a ring tone on my cell phone..i recently watched a 2 or 3 part video of you and Michael Learned...please forgive if I'm wrong..but she seemed alittle rude in away, while yall were cooking..her personality didnt match Olivia at all..I love all of you guys, and the cooking videos kinda showed a side of her, that I've never seen..you was very patient with her, and let her know that you really didnt cook while on the Walton's..I loved it when you done the applesauce cake in your home I believe..wish you would share it again..thanks for taking the questions, and answering them
I love that you have our theme as your ring tone :). None of us are completely like the characters we played. We pull from who we are, what we know and what we believe is the truth of the character. Like all of us, Michael is a mix of what you saw as Olivia and who else she is in real life. I guess I know her well from all our years and that more of that was not with the camera rolling.
I love all of your segments however, you know my favorite is the behind the scenes and the guests. I so appreciate all the work and time this all takes! Thank you and I hope you have a blessed New Year!!
Creating this channel was a great idea. It's amazing how even though it's been over 50 years (doesn't feel that way) I can recall many of the episodes. In 1971 I was 12.
Hi Judy. In this video I saw a clip of John in the new mill. Was that on the sound stage or was that filmed on site at the house? Do you remember that house that was saved and moved near the general store? I think it was John-Boy and him and Ike wanted to create a Main Street effect. I don’t remember ever seeing it used.
The new mill was near the exterior house set on the back lot. The interiors of the new mill were filmed in the actual mill not on the sound stage. Near Ike’s store they build Jim Bob’s garage and Godsey Hall in later seasons.
You kids and adults were so convincing to we viewers. That’s why we are still hooked on The Waltons after 50 years.

Thank you so much for sharing the overview of both books for all of us.
You have included such great variations of things ~ there is something for everyone to 'take away'. 😊 May you have a blessed New Year...
Thank you so much.
As a child, I knew that Earl Hamner Jr. was not only the author, but the narrator of “The Waltons.” “Goodnight, John Boy.” ♥️
I have been enjoying the run of these episodes because I always loved the Waltons show so much. I hope it keeps going. There’s still lots to uncover.
Glad you are enjoying it.
Happy Birthday Erol 🎂 🥳 🎉 The Waltons Love my favorite one fan Big Hi Judy Happy New year 2024 🎉
🥰
I've been watching watching waltons the deed the marathon and now the beguiled great episodes judy the show doesn't get old
Amazing how timeless the episodes are.
I like "The Waltons" much better than "Spencer's Mountain". Thank you Ms Judy and all who made "The Waltons" to enjoy when originally aired until today in reruns❤...both who have passed away and to all still with us. Thank you for all you do Ms Judy. May you and yours have a healthy Happy New Year 🎉. God's speed.
Thank you. Glad you have enjoyed both shows. Thanks for continuing to watch.
The expanded information about The Walton’s sharpens our understanding and appreciation for this authentic slice of Americana. It is as good a place of facts about American history as the Library of Congress. And that is due in large part because of Judy’s efforts. 😇
Oh wow. Thank you so much.
@@judynorton2598 you are welcome, I decided to spare you any flirtatious remarks this week since you do so much to connect people to a greater understanding of the Waltons.
Earl had such a great voice. It was a such a neat idea to have narration at the beginning and end.
I agree - it really added a wonderful element to the show. Especially with Earl doing the narration.
You do a fantastic job Judy and I am so glad you do this. It is such a wonderful thing to get to see the cast now. We love you all and thank you so much for being a part of our lives still. Happy New Year Judy🎉💕
Thank you so much. So glad you are enjoying my channel.

Hello miss Judy hope you had a wonderful Christmas me and my daughter woke up Saturday the 23rd with high fever 103 my daughter and 102 for me and we r still stuffy and today is Thursday the 28th been drinking a lot of vitamin c I love Spencers mountain
Oh no! So sorry you both got sick on Dec 23rd. Hope you’re both feeling better now.
Hi Judy, this show has always been phenomenal-A+!
I enjoyed this segment too. The statue of Earl is great.
Love from your longtime fan way up here in Alaska! Happy 2024!😊
So happy to hear that. Thanks for watching.
Judy, in the 'Homecoming A Christmas Story', what was it like working with Patricia Neal? I love watching 'Homecoming' every year!
Patricia was great. She was kind and focused during filming and really nice to us off screen as well.
Thank you for watching. Happy New Year.
Thanks Judy for your Webb site I love watching it, I used to watch the Walton’s in the 70s and now I watch it every day, sometimes I wish I lived there because every one took care of each other the way I should be. Thank you so much 🤩
Thank you for continuing to watch.
Thanks, Judy, for sharing. Happy New Year to my Walton family. 😊❤
Thank you. Same to you.
I would like to wish you and all of the cast that you talked to a happy and healthy 2024. You all deserve to get some sort of award for your efforts. Keep up the good work and I will continue to watch your BTS and ask Judy segments.
Thank you very much.
Well, I for one am super glad you decided to do a Walton Channell.
It's also nice, and rare, that a person we as kids watched on TV interact with us. You hold a special place in our hearts as Mary Ellen, Judy so, thank you! And Happy New Year.
Thank you for your kind comments.
Judy, I'm sure that you hear this all of the time. The Waltons was much more than just a television show to me! You were family! There was so much to love and admire about the characters. The only other time that I have been so affected and drawn in was for Downton Abbey!!!
Thank you. I’m so glad the show has felt that way to you.
Love your Ask Judy videos!!!! Just a bit of house keeping as you are reading a question for a fan about Spencers Mountain. The person writes the Movie was made in the 40's but actually it was 1963.
Thanks for the clarification for everyone. Glad you are enjoying these.
First off, thank you so much for all of these behind the scenes. Secondly, to correct the womam commenting on Spencer's Mountain, it was set in the '60's. And lastly, are you surprised at how popular the Waltons has remained after all of these years and how many fan show up to your events.
I don’t think any of us imagined the longevity and continued relevance of the show these 50 plus years later.
Thank you Judy for answering my question! What a lovely surprise! Happy New Year!
I have wanted to know the answer to the question you asked Judy about what she mightve asked Earl Hamner because each time we watch an episode they are all SO exceptional. Were the characters and their storylines fictionalized or genuine? Very good question. Thank you for asking it.
Glad you had a chance to watch this segment when I answered it! Thanks for asking.
Your channel is always interesting to me. No matter what you do, I always enjoy it.
👍Its unamimous 😊
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much.
Wow Spencers Mountain was just exactly like the Waltons Mountain both family had lots and lots of family members
They sure did.
Earl is one of my favorite writers
🤩yes! for sure. 😊
Mine too :)
Earl was a writing genius
Earl Hamner was a beautiful soul. "He loved people, ALL people" taken from his own words during an Interview.
I haven’t seen Spencer’s mountain in many years but I seem to remember the Walton’s being mentioned once. Something about the Waltons over the mountain or something
Interesting. I haven’t seen it in ages either. I’ll have to check that out.
Very nice video I wish I was there see meet Walton's cast
Perhaps you will make it out to a meet & greet one of these days.
Glad you enjoyed the show and these segments.
I just adored Earl Hamner so much!!! And his voice was so beautiful that it was something I always look forward to hearing!!!
It was so special that he was the one to do the narration over the seasons.
Thanks again judy love the videos you do
Thank you so much.
Fun information on behind the scenes. Thank you for showing us one more movie to add to the must watch list. I must compliment you on your choice in colours for this video 🍻
Glad you enjoyed it!
The one good thing about covid is Judy you and Kami started a good thing was to ed us fans what it was like behind scenes of the Walton's episodes.
🥰
I have been watching the whole series lately on Prime. Growing up watching the show every week, its so great to have the technology to relive memories. Families dont pop popcorn, and gather to watch shows like we once did. These back stories, are a wonderful addition. Thank You!!
So glad you are still enjoying the show. Amazing how the stories resonate these 50 years later. Still such relevant topics.
@judynorton2598 what's amazing is 50 years later, Mary Ellen Walton is replying to my comment on a computer, who would have ever imagined.. 😆. Made my day!!
WTBS showed Spencer's Mountain many times and I really liked it and
i saw how different it was from the
Walton's but still similar as well but
i really enjoyed it Thanks for showing
this and I wish you a very Happy New Year 2024 next week Thank You Judy.

Thank you. You too.
I really enjoy the Walton's a lot
🥰
Thank you as always for your lovely remarks.
Very interesting, thank you again, love these segments. ❤❤
So glad!
Hi Judy. May I join you all in the Happy belated Birthday celebration for the would be 100th for the late great Earl Hamner Jr. ? Thank you Judy.😊
Thank you.
Have a very Happy New Year .
Thank you for your wonderful channel as well .
Thank you. Happy New Year.
He was an amazingly talented writer.

What a lovely tribute that you all made to Earl Hamner jr. The Waltons was such a lovely endearing show, and you all gave of yourselves to make that show what it was. And it's still touching lives all of these years later. I know it's something you all are just so very proud of.❤
Earl was one of a kind and we all loved him.
Thank you so much. Glad you have enjoyed and continued to watch.

How wonderful that Earl has been honored in that way! Just think of ALL the people around the world whose lives he has impacted! Yes, I wonder also about what stories were true, true but embellished or totally Earl's imagination...no matter what...the stories and characters live on and I always think of them as "real!" Judy, you definitely put your suddenly "free" time to good use...and we all have benefitted, for sure. I am so glad that you are still continuing on with this channel even when I'm sure your time is not as free anymore.❤ I love ALL the different episodes you share with us...a little bit of everything! I didn't realize that I have been watching your UA-cam videos from the start. I began watching them from Kami's video referral in 2020. It was a difficult year for me and it was enjoyable for me to watch your information and recollections! Thank you for being so faithful to your viewers with regular videos. 😊. I see each one!
That's awesome! Thank you so much for watching since the beginning.
I look forward to Mondays and Thursdays because of your videos! Thank you for continuing to stay in touch with the fans.
So happy to hear that.
It must have been quite the task of filming without audio focus I thought movie cameras had such features in the1970s well now ya know
Thanks Judy
Happy new year
Many aspects were much more complicated at that time.
Thank you, Judy. Happy 2024, and I'm looking forward to it more of your stories and maybe a few lines
thats really a nice tribute to earl (my dads first name!) - a lot of good questions & information - thanks judy & don't get into any trouble celebrating all the new years festivities LOL :)

Thank you for a great year on all the information of the Walton's, 🎉 happy new year to you and your family and all the cast of the Walton's x
Thank you very much.
Glad you have this platform on UA-cam to do what you do. It gives us the viewers a better understanding when re-watching the series. The off camera things are what I love to hear. Thanks again for doing a great job with your channel. Fan forever. 🙂
My pleasure. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful - I love the sense of that.
Thanks, Judy. I enjoy all the content you share and look forward to new segments each week. I usually watch them during my lunch break.
Awesome! Thanks!
Happy New Year. Thanks for all you do for us! Very entertaining

makes sense mr hamner would base upon real people but switch few things around. I've found few similarities between the walton family & my relatives. thanks for video.
So glad you enjoy these.
Thank you for watching.
Lots and lots of rehearsals for the Waltons episodes and lots of scenes you had to do every week throughout the 1970s.
You have done a great job with your videos on youtube!
Thank you so much.
Happy New Year, Judy! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🎉🎉🎉🎉
Same to you!
Need to check out Spencer's mountain though
Great story. Loved Spencer mountain.
Cool.
Creating this channel was a great idea. It's amazing how even though it's been over 50 years (doesn't feel that way) I can recall many of the episodes. In 1971 I was 12.
It’s amazing how relevant the show still is today.
I applaud you and the whole cast for not being involved in any scandals or child star troubles.
🥰
