    The introduction driving Brutus on a road trip is priceless! I found your channel doing a search here at UA-cam, trying to learn about the John Deere 318 tractor and variants. I’ve subscribed to your channel Neil because you are an artist! You provide so much sage wisdom for all of us here on UA-cam. I have a 318 myself. Never plan on selling it. It's been said it's the best garden tractor John Deere ever built. It's a bold statement but the fact these tractors are still working over thirty/forty years later is a testament to their build quality. These tractors were way ahead of their time even back then when first built in 1983.

    . Good choice 14ga wire ,easier to splice as I have managed to cut it with my back hoe and spring snow plowing too many times and its on only 1.5 acres of the property. Have plenty of waterproof wire nuts and wire on hand .Do test wire for breaks before you start. Trouble shooting a MFG defect is easier on the roll than in the ground I found out the hard way.

    Great video. Do you have any tricks on finding a break in an existing dog fence. My neighbor asked me to help fix hers after a lightning strike took out the transmitter. I hooked up the new transmitter and the loop is broken somewhere. Unfortunately I didn’t help install it. So I don’t know where the wire is ran exactly or where any splices might be. All I know to do is start pulling it up until I find the break Or start over and lay a new wire. Any ideas?

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 роки тому

      You can usually hear the transmission of the signal in the wire with an AM/FM radio. Set the radio to AM and hold it close to where you think the wire is buried or you can start out at the transmitter and hear what it sounds like through the radio. It makes a very distinct sound and you can use that like a locator to go around and trace the wire. If the wire is broken you have to buy what's called an RF choke and put that in line of the wire and it will send the signal out from both directions rather than in a loop.
      The combination of an RF choke and an AM/FM radio held close to the ground or mounted to a stick lets you walk around and find the wire with high accuracy. When the signal gets weak or it gets hard to hear then you're within a couple feet of the brake and the wire usually. I've used this method many times to find broken wire and it works really well. Actually shot a video of me trying to find one but never published it. Maybe I should do that? I have not looked lately to see if the RF choke is still available anywhere. I used to buy mine at radio shack and they are out of business obviously.

    Neil… Brutus logged some serious hours on that journey! And, you did it without a bug screen… glad you had your shades on.
    I am in the process of getting a new dog. The last two were pancaked on our road in front of the house. Before I do that, I am going to install an electronic barrier. We really can’t subject another pet to the fate of Abby and Shasta.
    I’ve done considerable research and have yet to come up with a wireless system that will work. Those that have a radius are too small or can’t be placed in a way that an obstacle won’t block their transmission. The GPS limiting systems require a monthly subscription through our unreliable internet reception area.
    My best bet is a wired system. But, it will require me to bury a wire. That is where the challenge comes in. You see, I live in an oak forest in the rocky foothills of the Ozark mountains.
    Plowing the wire in won’t be easy. There is scarcely a yard that isn’t rooted or rocked in obstacles. Just do the topsoil you say…. There is none!
    And, that is where I’m stuck. Imagine if you can, a roughly square 10 acre plot. Completely covered with trees… except for 1 1/2 acres of meadow. The yard is treed in too. We even have trees all around the house. One is so close the soffit is cut around its trunk!
    I thought about putting the barrier wire above ground. I have enough old copper telephone utility wire to do so. But, as you can imagine… the cost of posts and hardware are prohibitive. Not to mention the hassle to maintain it beneath shedding dead fall limbs and forest edge brush.
    So, I am stymied. I really miss having a dog. (The cat and I don’t really communicate on the same plane.). However, I can’t in good conscious subject another dog to the fate of the last two.
    Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.
    And, lest I forget, I enjoyed this video a lot! Thanks

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 роки тому +1

      Oh man Dave. I read this yesterday and have been thinking about it ever since but I haven't come up with anything brilliant yet. Your situation indeed sounds tricky. The wire doesn't require much cover or any really. The cover is just protection for the wire. I've heard of folks laying this down low in their grass and letting the grass grow up and around it and it has worked for years like that. What about something like a vibratory cable plow? Would that get through some of your terrain or is it just too much rock? Maybe you can do a hybrid of above and below ground? If you laid a garden hose across the top of the ground, would it be covered up with leaves and debris in a year's time? At one time I probably had enough garden hose to enclose your entire property. I had every friend and relative saving old garden hoses from any trash can or garage sale. They make a great conduit for the wire as long as not exposed to the sun every day. The connections allow you to fish the wire through great distances. But, that requires lots of hose. You can use poly air line too.
      I wish I had better ideas for you. Wish I could see it in person despite having a pretty good idea based on what I've seen in your videos and how you describe it.
      I'll have to keep pondering. The biggest question is what kinda traffic would the majority of the wire see if it was just laid in the ground? Meaning, with minimal cover would it still be at high risk? You could always lay out the wire and do the training and get your dog very acquainted with the boundary. After all the real thing that makes it undergrad dog fence work is the training of the dog to stay in the boundary not training the dog to fear the shock. If you could get that established with a dog and have it work for even a short amount of time then you would probably gain a lot of benefit for the dog. The wire is relatively cheap to fix and repair If it gets damaged one or two times.
      I'll keep thinking on this though....

      @@digdrivediy thanks… I guess I need to do a pretty good assessment…. Of the area but also of the needs. Do I really need the dog to roam all of the woods? Can I train it to go through the boundary only when I’m around? Is there enough old hose to do the inaccessible/impractical areas?
      Thanks Bud, you’ve given me a leg up on figuring it out. I’ll let you know what comes next.

    Hey Neal, just wondering if you think this same concept as the wire underground installer you made could be made to install Pex waterline (not needing to be under the freeze line)? something from garden to the house.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  2 роки тому

      Sure! I've installed some soft irrigation line with a modified knife. It can be done if the ground conditions will allow it.

    You should have ran some wire through the woods. Dogs are prety easy to train to poop in the woods. Dog poop in the woods means no cleaning up dog poop, no mowing dog poop and no walking through dog poop in the lawn.
