Would a sling be able to hurl a vial or bottle containing an acid or explosive? That would certainly help them stand out from other range Weaponry.

Helm of the Gods seems like a great item to tweak for your homebrew campaign. It seems like if your world has a custom pantheon, having a 1st level spell you can associate with each of them would be a good way to introduce each god to your players.
