SRK's best work where he could shine as an "actor". He should have won a National award for this. The scene of SRK sitting in train and observing a boy selling water still brings me to tears. Why this movie was flop is also the reason why movies like this are not made and stars are not able to try "acting" for a change.
I watch this movie in Single Theatre and that time usually Rickhsawalla ,street vendor often watch Movies After completing the movie they were like Paisa barbad kar diya .But i loved this movie lot i have watch this movie many times in ott also
I never bought any OTT subscription or bought any movie online except Swades. Bought it on youtube for 250 rupees. My all time favourite across all movie industries. Mahatma Gandhi's autobiography and Swades are the reasons why I am living in my village since last 5 years.
What a review/revisit, hats off. Swades is so close to my heart and what I appreciate especially about it is that it is the best patriotic movie ever made and it does it while not put down another country or fighting any war. Hell, I'm not even Indian and I felt empowered to fight for the country. Again, amazing job on the review, talked about literally every aspect of the movie. Shame that people didn't recognize it when the movie came out, but at least we cinephiles can discuss it.
this is not srk movie this is gowarikor movie ...and he made this movie great and the day indian audience start realising that will be the day indian industry will be great
Swades is eternal! I wish there was a way for us to show our appreciation for the beauty of this movie by honoring the cast with an award (on a national scale). I'm so grateful that this movie was made.
Wonderful breakdown and revisit... I wish kids of this generation who love SRK for pathan and jawan should watch this film. And sadly, I think they might feel bored... Because of the attention span of the audience and commercialization of movies, Movies like swades can never be made in this generation. Even though they are made, they won't get the deserved recognition.... I hope it changes
It's hard to imagine SRK has been in Industry for 30+ Years and still didn't get a Single National Award for best actor.. Instead of SRK they gave Saif Ali Khan national award for Hum Tum (his mother was part of jury) that year..SRK didn't even get national award for movies like My Name is Khan & Chak De India ..What a waste of national award
This is one my fav feel good movie, story flow, cinematography and song makes this a must watch. Special during these time when we really need to work together to make this world a better place.
this is so well made I finished the video and looked at the views and was surprised to see abt 120 views wheras this video can garner way way more Keep it up man great video 10/10
I still remember watching it FDFS being SRK fan and I didn’t like it much. But after coming to Australia I rewatched it again and I loved it. It’s one of my all time favourite movies now. I have watched the train scene more than hundred times
SRK ne ek baar nahi bhi dekhi hogi ye movie. I have watched it numerous times. This is hands down his career best performance and Ashutosh's best work. The album deserves a seperate special mention or breakdown.
Great video essay. However, if I had to do this... I would've played the Train scene with the boy selling water in cups! That is enough to say everything you've said! Even your best expression that I liked the most in this video, "Kaveri amma' reaction on Mohan' return is enough to make a grown-man, CRY!"
The beauty of Swades is that it has multiple iconic scenes to encapsulate its magic. the train scene did cross my mind, but felt it would be unjust to cut and edit the clip further to adjust for a quick intro, the impact would be lost. it does summarize the film's soul, but what's the point of me making this video if I had to just communicate it with a scene, it's already available on UA-cam.😅
The hardest part is restraining myself from watching this movie every now and then, so that I don't loose that ethereal moments which this piece of art gives me. And also I'm glad that I am seeing this movie after being old enough to understand all the underlying notes it portrays. Many movies may come n go, but Swades stays on the top classic tier. And about ARR, it feels like every BGM in this movie seems to skip my ears and directly listened by heart yes I understand certain music sequence especially that one romantic depiction on that abruptly starts somewhere in the middle of the movie. Coming to those Haridas scene and the train sequence, those imagery was etched in my soul y'all. And I confirm that those realities shows had implied certain morals and perspectives in me for ever. Happy to have been born to this timeline of existance.
We did'nt loose him tbh. He is just keeping up with the times. Even in an action thriller like Jawan the core message delivered was very close to what Swades was trying to deliver. That if Indians want they can bring about a change in society whether by voting or by community work.
Getting more into some really cult movies and documentaries based out of india like Final Solution . Anyways , this video perfectly portrays about the movie Swades , really liked the intricate breakdown of this video . I hope this video gets more traction. Godspeed brother ^^
I had seen the movie in the theater when it released.. It certainly has it’s moments.. performances are great.. some hard hitting dialogues and scenes.. good music and bgm.. But.. but What I found lacking was an engaging story.. it felt more like a docu drama than an interesting movie to be experienced in a theater.. just my opinion..
I remember watching this movie as a child, but never really thought what made this movie a masterpiece, as you call it. Fantastic job and thank you for the insightful video🤌
without kaveri amma this movie would not made sense, kaveri amma is a character who tie down every other aspect and character in this film. the actor, director and writer understood this very well, that's why we can feel the warmth of kaveri amma.

I believe it is a classic not a cult classic. Swades (even though it was a flop) now is loved by mainstream audience. My only problem with the movie was that too many songs dampened the pacing of the movie.
What you just described is by and large the definition of a cult classic, but I get what you meant there. I agree with you about the songs placement. but realistically, I don't think a brisk pacing would have helped the film better at the box office. given the trends, and taste of the audience back then.
@@Indicfilm Isn't cult classic something that has an ardent fanbase but it is generally not liked by everyone? Cult is generally reserved for a sub section of a community or a society right?
@@akashreddy2928 Right, the term 'Cult classic' stems from the phenomena of 'cult films' from '70s pop culture in the West, where 'suppressed' or 'controversial' films were kept alive by fan groups. typically these films are not entertained by the mainstream audience resulting in their demise at the box office, but are rediscovered much later and loved by dedicated/passionate fanbases over time. I referred to Swades as a 'cult classic' in the video as it perfectly encapsulates what happened to this film right from its release to now. (which was a flop then, and still isn't celebrated by the 'mainstream audience' barring film buffs and movie lovers) Here, I'm not referring to the word "cult" as a socially elusive religious group, etc. and my usage of 'cult classic' is not to implicate any negative connotations. Hope that helps. Anyway, have a good time!
Very well narrated and superbly explained every aspect in simple manner 👏👏👌 very good and keep it up… mind my words your channel will grow in bounds and leaps within a year👍
Movies like Swadesh are not meant to be blockbusters. They will never be. They are meant to be made, even if the movie gets failed. The producer has to spend money on it knowing that he'll not get all the money back. And when this will be possible? The other blockbuster movies which will bring money into the industry. Movies like Jawan are also needed for the industry to survive. To glorify parallel or arthouse movies, we don't necessarily need to bash commercial blockbusters. If we keep doing these, we'll meet the fate of Bengali Film Industry that produced great movies at past but now even superstars are kind of struggling there to make it bigger. Reason is same as I have mentioned.
Hi Pratik, Thanks for the comment. Swades is also a commercial film (backed by a studio, star lead cast) It too tried catering to the mass audience hence too many songs, and inconsistent pacing. Arthouse movies are typically independent films, catered specifically for niche audiences. India has a fair share of Indie movies, which are made aiming for a screening at international film festivals rather than theatrical success. I'm not against commercial cinema, I love them in fact (RRR, Jawan, Animal). but I don't advocate mind-numbingly mass movies, which lack in terms of writing, acting, and direction. too much commercialization with minimal effort leads to mediocre films, like in the case of most Telugu movies now (and I'm a Telugu guy).
