thanks a lot for that video! had no idea how to change the two "inner" bulbs and did not dare to pull or turn too hard. before i finally found your excellent video i only found some for later v50 versions with different bulb removal procedures.
Thank you, I’m really glad to help! I’ve never had to do glow plugs, all cars are very different. An easy job on one can take hours on others, even bulb changes!
I was been told that you better NOT touch car light bulbs with bare hands, but use gloves or a tissue. Your fingers are always a little greasy and grease on lightbulbs reduces their longevity. Other than that, very helpful video, of course.
You all prolly dont care at all but does someone know a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow lost my login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
@Dean Jerome Thanks so much for your reply. I found the site thru google and im in the hacking process atm. Takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
Hi Darren, from Google: Press and hold trip reset button, turn on the ignition, wait for the yellow warning light to start blinking, release the button and wait for confirmations sound, turn off the ignition, turn the ignition back on to check if the service message is gone.
Hi Jerzy, country is England. They don’t dazzle in projector lamps, I never fit these to standard reflector headlights and I completely disagree with people fitting dazzling bulbs or HID conversions to reflector headlights, it’s beyond irresponsible! Even poorly adjusted headlight levels are a nightmare. Thanks for the comment!
Just bought a 2005 v50 and the dims are so bad I cant see 25 feet! Some say they are as good as it gets but they are totally unusable! Any ideas? They are just the daytime running lights and you cant see shit with them!!! Need advice! Thanks
Hi Mike, I have the same problem with my V70 and XC90 headlights but I know the reason, the lenses are plastic and the protective lacquer has deteriorated and caused yellowing. If this is the case with yours then your first option if the lenses aren’t especially bad would be to upgrade the bulbs to a higher wattage or/and try going for a higher kelvin colour rating such as 6000k or 8000k which may be enough to fix them for now. Then your only option would be to repair or replace the headlamp assembly so the lenses are no longer an issue. It’s not easy to repair but the yellowing lacquer can ultimately be removed with polishing compound. If the lenses aren’t deteriorated then I’d really need to see them to be of any help as there could be any number of reasons such as incorrectly fitted bulbs or something not immediately apparent. Let me know if this helps and if you want to send me a direct message by all means do and I’ll advise you where I can if you send some photos. Hope this helps! Tolly.
Hi Tolly, Im gonna have a look and see if the chrome inside is worn but I think everything is good. It actually just passed a safety check in Ontario Canada, if you can believe that!!! Here is something I found last evening as well that kind of sums it up (copied from volvoforums.org.uk) : "This from aboutautomobile.com is dated 2006, and still no change in 2010! 2005 Volvo V50 Headlight Complaints Complaint Number: 10170297 Incident Date: October 6, 2006 Date Added to File: October 9, 2006 Description of the Complaint: 2005 volvo v50 has a chronic light problem ie the dim light setting does not provide enough light to drive safely on rural roads in the "dim" setting. Maximum forward visibility in the dim setting is between 48' and 55' this is made more hazardous by the dark line that appears at the 48' to 55' line this effectually blocks vision past this point. My volvo v-50 has spent 44 days at modesto european (volvo dealer) to try to repair this defect after the last two trips I/we were told that this is the best that it can be repaired. If this is the best it can be repaired this car should be taken off the road asap. There is a strong possibility that one could hit a pedestrian, disabled vehicle, deer ,elk ,etc at highway speeds of 55 mph. We have a car that is not safe to drive after dark what is volvo thinking." SO there ya go! After I have a look I will know what bulbs are in it and if I can go higher, but I really think its VOLVO that must take responsibility here. Idiots. I simply CANNOT USE it in the dark. Can you imagine someone designing a vehicle that is useless after dark? And - they GET AWAY WITH IT.
Hi Mike, yes I do agree that is pretty disappointing, I can understand issues after 12 years but from new is certainly not acceptable. Are your headlights projector lenses like on the car in the video? There’ll be like a glass eyeball in front of the bulb. I’ve always been happy with the lights on this car, I find the projector lenses are a lot better than the style where the bulb sits in a chrome reflector like on my V70 and XC90. I’d certainly like to know if you find the answer in case I ever encounter a car with the same issue.
Yes they look like the one in the video. Now I started the car and there IS a SMALL difference between the "running lights" and the low beams. I can manually turn on the lows and I do see the difference however small. If I cover the light sensor inside the car then they both come on. So that is disappointing because I was hoping maybe the bulbs were burnt or something easy-- but what were the odds that 2 were burnt...not good. So I have the absolute worst unusable lights in the world. I will be taking the lights out of the vehicle in the next few days to examine what kind of bulbs and how the inside of them are. I will get back to you with an update. Thanks for your replies. Maybe I will make a short vid to document the distance of sight I get with them.
HI Tolly, I pulled a headlight ass out today. There is a shiny metal shield seems to be blocking half the lamp in that socket??? IS that some stupid Volvo technology? If I bend them out of the way will I have better vision, do you know? Thanks again for your help.
Hi Mike, It sounds like the sort of shield I have on my V70 headlights which has standard H7 bulbs. Did the bulb have a silver metal base or a black plastic base? There's also the possibility the bulb wasn't located correctly which would mean the light wouldn't reflect correctly. The metal shield is not volvo specific it's just the way the light emitted from the type of bulb is reflected forwards. I wouldn't bend the shield out of the way as this will most likely make the problem worse. I still don't know that much without seeing the actual headlamps and knowing what type of bulbs are fitted so if you still are struggling feel free to message me directly with photos and I'll advise where I can.
Its more of a "reflector" than a "shield"...but it stands i the way of the light it seems. The bulb looked very standard, sorry I didnt notice any silver or metal base. Well, I bent it out and I will compare that side to the original side and see if any difference. Will keep in touch and let yo know. I wont be finding out for a few days. Thanks!
An auto shop told me they would have to take the bumper off to do this. Your video showed me that they are idiots. Thank you.
Spent weeks trying to find the best video that explains the light set up! This is it. Bulb info is what I need, thanks

Hi Molly, yes you’re right, this is one of my older videos, I do tend to mention gloves in my later videos. Glad the video helped otherwise 😊
I'm assuming it's pretty similar for a facelift? Video was really well thought out btw
Hi Kam, I can’t say as I have yet to encounter the facelift version. Hope you find what you need and thanks for the comment!

whats the name of the smallest bulb? the one that goes on the side, the led one you installed
Hi Juan, It's a T10 Wedge bulb sometime referred to as W5W. The T10 refers to the wedge being 10mm wide. Hope this helps, Tolly.
Like it. Thanks it really help. I was able to change it by myself.
