Andrew Furmanczyk :: howtoplaypiano.ca In this lesson of learn free music theory, I cover time signatures, more info on note values, and a very short into of the metronome.
This guy has really payed it forward with all these lessons.
People owe him so much for handing out a music education that would cost a small fortune.
@Neocereus did you ever donate?! :)
@@elizabethwood3182 he hasn't received his paycheck yet.
I know these videos are a little older but thank you for taking time out of your life to make these videos and teach anyone who is willing to learn. these videos have helped progress me and my music a lot. I appreciate it more than you know.
And 2 years later I'm here too. So grateful, I want to teleport to him just to say thank you.
i already know the basics but it seems like it goes from the basics "how to read music" and all that to the advanced "how to write music" stuff and like i need the basics of writing. i think since hes going over what i already know that means he will give me what i need.
i'm here even later than you, but luckily for all of us music theory doesn't change too much, so these vids are as relevant now as when they were first published. if you get these comments, andrew, i'd like to add my thanks and appreciation to everyone else's!!
I'm learning from him too, he's being really important in my music studies. Good luck to everyone else still learning
I'm here today lol
:) i'm glad to help!
This may be a really long time ago but this really helped me, thanks
You are a wonderful person to be putting these lessons on UA-cam. Thank you so much, very kind person.
2023 and these vids still on fire, thanks to the pianist/comedian Andrew. Appreciate it!
This guy deserve´s heaven and more
my words exactly
totally!
I've been playing guitar for six years, and I've never had a problem with rhythm. I learned how to play all the chords, and then chord progressions and rhythm followed very naturally for me. but NOW that I understand how to read sheet music, I'm starting to realize why music works the way it does. THANK YOU SO MUCH @Lypur! you are a really good teacher
That moment when a guy on UA-cam does better at explaining this than my college professor..
+ZephyrStorm Thanks for the compliment!
+Wedges Swiftling like the best teacher ever i mean english is not even my mother language and i understand it
+Wedges Swiftling i do though
+Wedges Swiftling and i know he is a techer he has his own academy after all
Do you major in music?
Thank you so much!! my piano teacher left the country and here there r no other teachers. I almost gave up on piano, but now i won't. Thanks man!
you are amazing man for giving the universal language of music to others. this is creation at its purest form
i am not having any piano, and i don't have any finance to buy it but it is my desire for music so that learning
thank you so much god bless you... internet is alive because of some peoples like you :-)
thanks :) I appreciate that!
Andrew Furmanczyk time to update your videos man!!! These are great videos except they’re not very visually helpful.
NEVER played music before and I am doing your Piano lessons and this. So many APPS out there to learn on and they do not really teach you anything but what keys to hit. You help us understand so we can do more than imitate. Thank you for caring enough to spend YOUR time so that the rest of us can gain some happiness beyond just listening to music. You make it accessible to all. You said that was originally was your goal so congratulations. You have made a difference and changed lives by being a kind person. Thank you.
I never grow tired of Andrew's teaching. Thank you for everything you've shared!
I had problems with the 6/8 time signatures. Now I understand everything perfectly, it's very logical and mathematical; in fact, very easy. Thanks a lot! I'm learning a lot of music stuff (I'm learning piano by myself) from your lessons :)
Same as me, I had problems with this as well. Glad I'm not the only one.
pil4r same here these are so helpful
Can u ols tell me in 6/8 after quater note there's eight note but won't 8 th note become one beat now. And then one quater would become two beat right? But then one beat remains empty though...
@@jagdishclasher4759 yes, I think he made a mistake. There should be two 8th note at 3 and 4 each.
@@anirudh7463
Good God, I know this video is old but you explained in 7 minutes what my teacher didn't know how to explain in several classes. I really don't know if I should quit my lessons now because if he can't explain basic stuff like this and leaves me full of doubts, then later I'll have a lot of difficulty with the harder stuff.
So did you leave his classes?
@@RasheedKhan-bm8fm the world may never know
@@Michael-vd1ot unless he replies back like I did after 3 whole years XD
@@RasheedKhan-bm8fm lmao hello from 2021

still useful decade later, an amazing teacher
Yeah, true. His lessons are accurate and not over simplified. Really helpful!
Always wanted to learn about music as a kid, now I'm 22 and i have a keyboard! Thanks a million for making these lessons free and accessible to all :D
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with noobs like myself. Wonderful that people can learn something new even if they don't have the money.
Seriously, I'm getting a keyboard for Christmas and this guy's videos are incredible.
Thank you so much for this. For taking the time. Infinite blessings to you for this!
i got lost during the 6/8 but i had the most fun getting lost in the learning, cause i can watch it again without my anxiety doing a breakdance in my head every time i ask a question or to repeat what was said.
Thank youu~~~~
It seems like saying which note is one beat is redundant, you can always change a note into its half form and double the bottom part of the time signature to get exactly the same result.
I love these lessions.
Being in Chorus since 3rd grade (in 12th grade now)
I learned the basics, but these lessions are great to really review and Get little things I forgot. Also I love the little things I didn't know =D
I can't wait to watch more, and learn more.
Thank you for using your time to make this.
'But if I move it up to 69 - er, 72-' I can't have been the only one who laughed a little at that XD
Andrew I've been trying desperatley to find a way to learn to sight- read for singing and your first 4 lessons have been extremely helpful. Thank you, I can tell that you put lots of effort into this for other people.
u are a blessing! u have no idea how much i wanted to learn piano but never could, first because no music teacher would accept me since im "too old to get the basics" and second bcz of how costly it is to learn piano here... so thank u so so much for putting in the time and effort :)
Andrew, I'm really enjoying the lessons! I've been playing music for years but never took any lessons, so I've been just writing blindly based on what I hear. I'm very glad that I found your lessons as it has given me a great chance to learn how to actually write music! Thank you very much and God bless!
this is getting so much easier as i keep watching the video again and again. the first time i saw i it i had no idea what was going on. the second time it started getting a little bit clearer. the third time it was crystal clear. don't give up guys. "just keep swimming"
Amazing work! never give up
This Is the best channel in learning Piano period. Thank you so much for helping us learn how to play piano. I had learned as a kid, but now at 52 want to relearn but didnt want to go thru the process again of going back to school. I bought a digital piano , and can practice again with your help at my convenience. Again, thank you so much , your truly an amazing person Andrew.
Just started your lessons yesterday 6/18/21 I noticed your comment from ten years ago. Just want to say thank you, whenever it was you made this, your being appreciated for the first time again! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 🙏🏼
Correction 11 years😉🤙🏼
Andrew i'm glad i stumbled upon your videos! Thank you so much. What I like most is the originality: no sophisticated lights, advanced camera, or tech. Just you, a whiteboard, a marker, and your shadows itching to get in on the action
These are eight years old now, and worth so much. Thank you for making these videos. Wonderful.
dude, you are a blessing!
I love this type of schooling, you only continue if it really inspires you and thanks to you man, i am inspired to learn more and write more because of my new found understanding. many thanks to you!
G'day Andrew. I'm a 68 year retired old fella from Australia. I discovered that sitting at home all day watching tv was driving me crazy. I decided to do something about it and have taken up learning the saxophone and harmonica. Anyway to assist me with the sax and harmonica I thought I would learn about music and that's when I came across your site.
Andrew thank you so much. I have never had anything to do with music before but the manner in which you teach makes it easy to follow. I have only started on this journey and already I have learnt a lot.
Only on lesson 4, but u don’t know how much I appreciate this! I’ve been looking all over for good music lessons that just doesn’t get you to “play along” with other songs. I usually find them not very helpful because I can’t follow along and it also means I have to memorize the sheet music!! Takes the joy out of it. It’s a whole different feeling if you can actually play a piece because you understand and know how to read the notes. Again, I know this vid was made a long time ago, but thank you thank you thank you!
You are my savior! :-D My husband is learning to play guitar. He understands tab but he's having trouble with music notation and theory. I'm not much help having no patience when it comes to teaching anyone anything. Your videos are exactly what he needs. Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this program. GREAT idea - the world needs more musicians! :-)
this one was good... mmmm that feeling when you learn something fast and easy :)) so good
This has been so helpful! Can't thank you enough for this course. You're a gem of a person :')
I am so grateful for these videos. I've always played guitar and thought it was time to learn how to read and create music.
Andrew is an amazing teacher. I really enjoy his free onllne course. He makes it fun to learn music theory. I'm enjoying the classes very much. The best part about it is that I can go back if I don't understand something and review it as much as possible without asking questions.
Andrew I wanted to thank you from deeps of my heart. No one would do such thing that you did and share his knowledge with everybody in the world. believe me so many people will remember your name including me
thank you for these videos andrew.ive been playing guitar for almost 8 years and want to learn music theory and learn how to play the piano.you describe everything really well.thanks again
THANK YOU.
Years of music lessons at school plus a couple of piano courses on my own and I've NEVER fully understood time signatures, until now. And I'm feeling so stupid because now it seems so easy, lol. So, again, thank you
Ive tried to learn this soo many times but I finally understand it now after this video! You are an awesome teacher, thank you!
Thanks man, I've already learned so much and I will continue to follow all these lessons!
he really doesn't lie when he says "don't worry, it gets easier"
Thank you so much ur the best!!!!
hey i just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to educate the less fortunate so they can follow there passion.i have found these videos to be very helpful******
I have 1 class a week with my music theory teacher which is only 2 hours long. I’ve had 5 classes and the teacher is expecting us to be able to decipher intervals by ear. It’s way too fast!
Thank you for this course, you teach much better than my professor
i cant believe you took time out of your day to do these... they really help. me (and all my friends) really appreciate it. thank you.
thanks I just bought a piano and this videos along with you're ''how to play the piano'' videos are helping me get better.
I had a solid grasp of how sheet music worked but by the time I reached this lesson my understanding of it was refined. Definitely a good lesson, thanks man.
Still watching in 2020. You're a legend😁😁😁I wanted to take music in school but I didn't understand the teacher, but I can understand you so much better. Thanks so much🥰
2023 now and counting
This is so helpful. I've always wanted to strengthen my basic theory knowledge and learn more. I'm really enjoying this series. Thank you for doing it.
So how have the last 7 years of music treated you?
@@urvishmahajan not bad
Just got a piano, have no idea of how to play it, or read notes - always had a dream to be able to do so. Your videos are so easy to benifit from - eventhoug im from Denmark! Thanx a lot for spending time to make these sessions to us, who arent able to get lessions otherwise!
Andrew, what a gift! Thanks for your lessons!
I really enjoy your classes. It's very easy to understand. I always had a craving to learn music but i didn't had much time. Now it's in UA-cam i can learn at any time.
honestly appreciate these lessons so much. I do a bit in piano violin and guitar (starting bass soon) self taught, and I never bothered to learn the music theory but I'm taking music gcse and I wanted to know the music theory for the exam so thank you so much for this xx
You’re so awesome!! I appreciate your quirkinesses & these videos so much. You’ve helped so many people learn so quickly & the way you break it down is so easy to understand.
I started playing piano on 10/11/20 and I just found your channel. Thank you for the free music theory series, I have learned a lot already and I am excited to learn more as I progress through the lessons ☺️
Homework time! xD thanks for putting up these lessons! They really help a lot!
I am really enjoying and understanding Andrew. This is so great that he took the time to do this for us. I always wanted to learn music. I'm also doing his piano lessons.
THANK YOU SO MUCH just wanted to let you know it is really helping me in my music theory studies. Love you Andrew
"Don't give up, keep going, you will get it.." that was very motivating...I wish you will achieve all your dreams in life, as you are now building dreams for others....thanks...
Thankyou so much! I am aiming to watch the music theory videos at night and watch piano lessons during my free time during the day. I haven't had the commitment to go to lessons for any instrument, so these videos are so ideal for me!:)
Hello andrew sir
i found you as an best teacher over internet
i tried many videos but all confused me
i have started following you and clearing all my confusions
i tried much for a piano teacher who can teach me
but i did not found access to it
but i should say after finding your videos i am really THANKFUL to you
if i say 100 times Thank you i think it still will be less for the knowledge you have showered on me
THANK you very much
I plan on completing your course in it's entirety, thanks so much for uploading these, you are a great teacher.
you're a hero for all musicians out there! like me, thank you!
I was so afraid to start learning this, but now it seems to be a pure joy of discovering a new language! Thanks and greetings from Lithuania!
THE CONNECTIONS!!! IT'S HAPPENING IN MY HEAD. :ooo
I understand 6/8 now!
These videos are so helpful!..just had to comment something..its hard to receive so much and not say thanks in return! This is really in depth knowledge and you're giving it for free..Noble person!
finally i understand time signatures!! i'm a noob/ dabbler so this just cleared up like 15 years of confusion lol
I searched on google free theory lesson and you come up right away =D. Great work dude!
Always wanted to play piano, just started these lessons, so excited. Thank you, thank you thank you!!
wow with just a little practice i have understood it!
It usually takes ages to teach someone like me!
TANKS SO MUCH ANDREW YOUR AWESOME!!!!
If anyone still doesn't get it, just browse the comments section below. I found it to be more useful than searching google on understanding time signatures. To save you time, here are ones that finally helped me figure it out:
CH4NCE: "Well, what i got is the first number on 4/4 for example, correspond to the number of beats that u gonna have in one bar, which means, 4 beats. And the second number correspond to the number ID that we saw on the lesson #3, which give us a note value of quarter note (note id 4 = quarter note) per beat. In the 6/8 we have six beats and the number id leads us to the 8th note value (note id 8 = 8th note value), meaning that each beat have one 8th note. From that you just have to make the ajustments to use another note value on specific time signature. Right??? Sorry for the english, greetings from Brazil! By the way, Awesome lessons, thanks a lot!!!"
Curtis Sebren: "You got it! This is giving you the very basic beat pattern for the bar. Within the 4/4 or 6/8, there can be any number of different values as long as the measure results in a total of four quarter notes (in 4/4) or six eighth notes (in 6/8). So one whole note is four beats which is an entire bar of 4/4. Two half notes takes up the same amount of space, as does four quarter notes. Hope that helps!"
I love your enthusiasm when teaching us this. Thanks for very helpful videos ;)
16:12 oh ur going fast are ya?
man.... 2010 was such a different time.
2020
@@chickens2902 yes that is the current year...
can't wait for the later lessons. being a drummer this is a bout all i know :P thanks andrew! you very kind and helpful!
Very good lesson. It would be helpful to bring in an instrument whrn youre demonstrating the different time values like when you sang the two eights then the quarterthen the half note. I dont mind your singing :) but i would have liked to hear how this would sound on the piano since im a beginner. :)
is because you in the wrong video. you can go to his how to play piano series if you wanna focus more on the piano.
He's trying to make it universal so it's just as easy for everyone, no matter what instrument you play
Calab Bemerer I just wanted to hear the note length. I don’t play an instrument. :)
Thank you so much. I am trying to learn Fur Elise, 3/8, and had no idea what it meant. I am 75 and trying to learn the piano after not having had lessons since I was 6 or 7 years old.
you explain this stuff very clearly. Thanks so much for not charging for this course!
so clearly explained about the bits. I learned this before from a video, but was confused with 6/8. Now I understand it. thank you a ton.
Thank you. You are really transforming conventional methods of education. This is truly ahead of it's time.
man, i haven't read any of the negative comments and i don't plan to. let me just say this, i think you're great!! i've been playing for about 16 years by ear/self taught. i've tried learning theory on my own and i SUCKED!! i could never get it. i just called it my greek because i didn't understand. but for it to be mine, i would have to own it and i didn't but I DO NOW!! thanks to you, I'M TRULY UNDERSTANDING!! keep it up and thanks!!
Your lessons are awesome!!! Thank you so so much!! I wish you taught me how to play piano when i was younger. But at least im reading music and playing the piano now. 😍 thank you thank you!!! But also, you lost me at 6/8. Better update your videos with you playing the piano when explaining the time signatures so we can hear it better. Quarantine project!!!
This is sooo helpful! I was in chorus for three years and none of this made sense to me and now it finally does. Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Priceless, and engaging lesson - demystified much for me. Thank so much Andrew.
I salute you for being such a generous person and sharing your knowledge about playing the piano...God Bless U Bro! :)
Love your teaching.
what a mad-lad man's got the coolest hair in these videos 😄 so glad he did this for us! fr.
you're a fantastic teacher dude
it's 2020 i can't believe how much time i've wasted trying to learn with the tutorial videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about music 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you some much for making this course available, I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
michael - hey vsauce, michael here
andrew - learn free music theory.....wohoo
@POODYMAN2010 :) Actually there was a time signature. If you look closely there's a C there with a line through it. This stands for "cut time" which is a short hand way of saying 2/2 time if it had no line through it, it would be common time which is short hand of 4/4 time.
:) Hope that helps!
Multiple piano teachers would probably be pissed to know that I am finally understanding this stuff -one teacher went so far as to take my hands and pat them on my knees while I counted out loud, and I still didn't get it! After my first year of college I changed my major from concert piano to psychology :) I can play Chopin, Rachmoninoff, Bach...etc and thanks to you I am on my way to being to count the beat out loud (10 year later...). You are a fantastic teacher!! Thanks for doing this!!!!
That was nice to say. And I really appreciate him taking the time to share this knowledge.
you are really excellent music teacher! I learned a lot from your video series!
OMG!!..i can understand your video..it's so simple..i will tell my friend that want to learn piano come watch your video..luv your video
