We did kyack to Loggerhead for some snorkeling and exploring. Thought it was crazy that we were there at the same time.

I've learned from you that we can have all the comforts without have a huge boat; you are The King Of Comfort, on boats!.... The boat we had for 28 years, before the present P2520XLD was a 35' CT Sundeck. That boat just got back from a "Great Loop' trip with the present owners, and I hear it may be for sale. They did a major overhaul before the trip and did a 'fair job'; not a great job with the retrofit. The only problem with it, is it is a displacement-trawler. I now prefer to cruise in the 28-35 mph range so although the CT is big, heavy and has amazing comforts (2 heads. 3 showers. full galley. 3 cabins, 2 control stations, 300 gallons of fuel. 250 gallons of water. 80 gallon holding tank, etc etc) I now am not willing to go slow again. (Three boats ago, we had one that cruised in the 40-45 mph range!).... I like the boat we have now, (The boat is strong and sea-worthy) and that is a top priority to me. and I've considered doing all the upgrades to it, exactly like you have done to yours. I'm a 'bigger' dude than you, (must be that 'beer' habit ☺) so a 2530, or a 2830 would be more doable.... What next boat, is always a hard decision; I'm always looking....
Hey Captain. What a great video. I've always wanted to get there. Now because of you I now can see what it's all about. Thanks for the tour. Maybe one day I'll get there. Safe travels back
@@OutOnTheReef did you have to use the extra gas you brought with you to make your trip complete? I have the same 90 gal on my boat. You think it would be better leaving from key west instead of bahia Honda? Seems like it added a lot more miles to your trip. Possibly you did that because of parking for several days where I could see that happening.
Thank you for the tour. That was awesome. Just think they had to ship all those bricks to build that fort and build that. I assume they heat the cannonball so it fit in cannon at bottom tightly when hot. Probably wouldn't it correctly cold.
Most of the "grumpy" holes would have all had cannons when the fort was built to protect shipping lanes. Original cannons were mostly scrapped. The cannons now there are replicas. Due to more modern cannons the fort became obsolete for that purpose then made a prison.
Wife and I took ferry there from Key West for 25th anniversary. 2015. Went early May. Not nearly as crowded back then. Don't know if time of year or more people discovering the hidden gem. Ferry will bring all your stuff if you're camping on the island. Participated in Coast Guard "rescue" on way back to Key West. One of their search planes flying over us and then out to boat they wanted them to look at and back. Turned out to be previously reported sailboat adrift. Probably broke mooring during a storm while no one aboard. Interesting anyway
Awesome video! The fort was originally built as a southern defense for shipping lanes in and out of the Gulf of Mexico via the keys. It was used as a prison after the Civil War and even housed John Wilkes Booth after he shot Lincoln. That's such a cool place, and I'd love to get out there myself some day!
yes dr Mudds story was amazing and i hope one day you can make this trip , they have a ferry from key west i think is $180 per person cap, thanks for watching

Snorkeled in the pilings by helicopter pad. More species of fish than can count. Largest tarpon I've ever seen and a pretty large stingray sitting on the bottom. Bathrooms are for campers only. Think they're locked while ferry and float plane guests are on island. At least they were while we were there. No water so really limit there use
I’d love to go there but I don’t have the fuel mileage to make it and get back even carrying extra fuel. But maybe my next boat in the future. (Bucket List) Great video Captain and I finally made it to the gulf got some epic kings Can’t wait to put them on the grill with some butter, paprika and glades seasoning stay safe out there Cap

i take good care of all my equipment and that is why it looks new and yes youtube helps a little but not 100% cap, the rest needs to come out of your pocket thanks for watching cap.
It was a fort that was eventually relegated to a prison, the cannons are used to show what it would have looked like. They also heat up the cannon balls so they can act like an incendiary device: light another warship on fire
Love the video, really amazing place! Just wondering whats up with the facemask? I can just imagine some people would react a bit negative to it from time to time.. 😛 Anyways, subbed
That is a great question captain there's no gas stations in this area that's why these trips are very planned because you have to calculate really good your fuel consumption in my case that's why I never made this trip because of that but I was able to bring a little bit more fuel on my boat so I was able to make it but here there's no stores no gas stations And no cell phone service either
@@OutOnTheReef oh my God Capt!…well done on your logistics….tremendo! Una tormenta como la que enseñaste el video cruzando para alla te puede desaparecer del mapa….and with no gas, cell phone signal etc… makes that trip the final one for somebody without navigation skills….once again well done Capt be safe!
Glad to see safe and well. You made us hold our breath more than couple of times during the past night. Did you ever consider using more than one anchor? I know it sometimes can be a problem but during a storm it can be very helpful to minimize dragging. Besides your main anchor at the bow you can drop a good size MUSHROOM style anchor over the side towards the stern. I have tried it. It works really well and also helps stabilize the boat. As usual great video. 👍
You have a great point there captain but I think 2 anchors may cause problems if you have to move your boat all the sudden Especially if I have to use the windows And using the mushroom that is a great suggestion captain that really helps to lower over the drag thanks for the awesome suggestion and for being awesome viewer of the channel captain
You are correct that this was a prison It held the most famous prisoner of civil war history The Doctor who treated Abraham Lincolns assassin..Doctor Samual Mudd. Fort Jefferson was build as "Fort" for defense first of all . . . 1) all those windows were made for defense, for artillery "small canons" etc. . . . . 2) most forts have had a "Holding" cell for soldiers or anyone who must be in custody . . . . 3) Some Fort had a Church or place of Prayer . . some bigger than other as Religion & God should be observed . . . . . as this particular Fort never saw any action or battle . . . . it was used for a Prison to house certain inmates only for a short period . . . . .

I love it there!
It is an amazing place Matthew is peace and quiet and a lot of history thanks for watching
Hey Captain.
What a great video. I've always wanted to get there. Now because of you I now can see what it's all about. Thanks for the tour.
Maybe one day I'll get there.
Safe travels back
tanks cap for watching and yes you need to visit this place, is away from everything 👍⚓
Nice Video Capt! Looks like you and the boat are ok!
Randy thank God everything went smooth and everybody got no problems And thank you for asking captain appreciate your watching 👍
Nice tour of the fort..
Thanks Bruce for coming along cap.
Great video! Thanks for sharing

That's impressive to think they built that place before engines and pumps etc.
yes is a awesome engineering cap.
As usual, top notch video Cap! I wish you could do more but I know you focus on quality.
Lol captain thank you for understanding but in the next video I will do a little more to show you this area thanks so much for watching captain👍🛥⚓️
Thank you for the tour. That was awesome. Just think they had to ship all those bricks to build that fort and build that. I assume they heat the cannonball so it fit in cannon at bottom tightly when hot. Probably wouldn't it correctly cold.
yes all those millions of bricks from key west they made a lot of runs , thanks for the info on the cannon balls cap.👍⚓
they heat the cannon balls to set wooden ships on fire.
@@stcldcrzy - You are correct. Thank you for the info. Wonder how they got the hot balls up to the cannons on the roof before they cooled down.

Nice Axopar 37 behind you at dock
Yes that is a dream boat cap. Because of its large cabin and outboards displacement 👍
You are living the dream, Capt!
thanks Roger for watching
Most of the "grumpy" holes would have all had cannons when the fort was built to protect shipping lanes. Original cannons were mostly scrapped. The cannons now there are replicas. Due to more modern cannons the fort became obsolete for that purpose then made a prison.
That is awesome info on the Grumpy holes cap. Thanks for sharing that history 👍⚓️🛥😉
try, fort sumter in south carolina or fort macon north carolina
Thanks for the suggestion cap.👍
I looks just like George’s Island / fort Warren in Boston Harbor
Probably are the same people who built this fortress
Wife and I took ferry there from Key West for 25th anniversary. 2015. Went early May. Not nearly as crowded back then. Don't know if time of year or more people discovering the hidden gem. Ferry will bring all your stuff if you're camping on the island. Participated in Coast Guard "rescue" on way back to Key West. One of their search planes flying over us and then out to boat they wanted them to look at and back. Turned out to be previously reported sailboat adrift. Probably broke mooring during a storm while no one aboard. Interesting anyway
wow that is some trip cap, and great to see the coast guard in action 👍👍
I like the grumpy reference.
Lol John me and you know what we're talking about😁👍🏴☠️
you probably got a whiff of the lead in that sea plane's exhaust. they still use leaded fuel in general aviation aircraft.
Yes it smell like lighter fluid it's pretty crazy
Awesome video as always ❤️ thank you 🙏
Thank you for watching that really supports the videos you're awesome thank you
Capt., Cannon balls were heated so that upon impact with wooden ships a fire would take place. Another great video, thank you.
great info cap i did not know that, thanks for watching.
John Wilkes Booth died during a gun fight at Garrets Farm in 1865. He was never at fort Jefferson. 😂

No water so really limit there use
wow i did not know they ware closed during that time , thanks for the info cap.
I’d love to go there but I don’t have the fuel mileage to make it and get back even carrying extra fuel. But maybe my next boat in the future. i take good care of all my equipment and that is why it looks new and yes youtube helps a little but not 100% cap, the rest needs to come out of your pocket thanks for watching cap.
It was a fort that was eventually relegated to a prison, the cannons are used to show what it would have looked like. They also heat up the cannon balls so they can act like an incendiary device: light another warship on fire
awesome information cap thanks for your comment cap and for watching👍⚓

@@JohnJohn-bp5ci me encanto la tormenta☕️👍💪
Hey Capt tremendo video gracias….question for you….Where do you guys buy gas down there in Dry Tortugas?
@@Carbon15556 yes very tru cap specifically in a small craft it gets scary out there cap.
Thanks for watching
Very nice video
thanks for watching Chris
Lo que le faltó fue nada para empezar a pitar la alarma del ancla
si estave in el borde de pitar , que bueno que no me despeto
You are correct that this was a prison
It held the most famous prisoner of civil war history
The Doctor who treated Abraham Lincolns assassin..Doctor Samual Mudd.

Fort Jefferson was build as "Fort" for defense first of all . . . 1) all those windows were made for defense, for artillery "small canons" etc. . . . .
2) most forts have had a "Holding" cell for soldiers or anyone who must be in custody . . . . 3) Some Fort had a Church or place of Prayer . . some bigger than other as Religion & God should be observed . . . . . as this particular Fort never saw any action or battle . . . . it was used for a Prison to house certain inmates only for a short period . . . . .
