At last, a good choice of tempo that allows us to actually hear the music. Too many conductors treat this piece as nothing more than a speed zone. Great performance.

The Bartered Bride (Czech: Prodaná nevěsta) is an opera in three acts by Bedřich Smetana. The story is based on a libretto by Karel Sabina, takes place in a village in Bohemia in the 19th century. The overture, which is technically highly demanding, provides a rapid introduction to the game's action. Critics had doubted whether the composer was capable of writing such a funny Singspiel. That is to say, he wrote music for the stage, which is full of villagers in traditional costumes, and for choirs, whose songs will soon be sung by all the Czech people. It should also be remembered that Smetana was strongly nationalist and had anti-German connotations. The composer's concern was that Czech opera was until that time represented by a number of rarely performed minor works. This opera, Smetana's second, was part of his quest to create a specifically Czech genre of opera. This piece was not an immediate success, and was revised and expanded over the next four years. In its final version, it quickly established itself and ended up becoming a worldwide success. We will not complain about the liveliness of this magnificent Overture. Music gives soul to our hearts and wings to thought. *Lucien*

Check out Jaký byl Bedřich Smetana(with english subtitles) by Narodní muzeum (National Museum) or Hudební Genius (životy slavných) in Czech for more accurate information, Smetana was friend of Schumann, Wagner and Liszt and in fact he was accused for being too German

When we talk about music, do we still have to know what we're talking about? Smetana, like many others, no longer supports German musical hegemony. You are disconnected from reality. Quote: « With God's help, one day I will be Liszt for technique and Mozart for composition » Bedřich Smetana (these two composers mentioned are not German). *LM*

@@KassemSaulSmailiScarioni Funny but when I work out with weights I always listen to classical music. One of the sets is opera overtures. My favorites are by Mozart. Rossini's are easy to identify as are Wagner's to an extent.

Challenging to get the timing tight for some of his works. I've heard some sloppy renditions of The Moldau - all it takes is a few sections where the musicians are struggling and tripping over each other to tarnish an otherwise good performance. Quite a stressful workout for the whole orchestra. No need for any aerobic training exercises after that.
