PART ONE: • The Shocking Life & Pe...
Within the realms of performance art, Marina Abramović is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated and controversial female artists yet known. Her work has captivated and shocked many for its intensity, its rawness, and its willingness to push the boundaries of human endurance.
Although she began her career as a painter, in time she would turn her attention to performance art in the early 1970s where she would start exploring themes of the body, pain, and trauma. She often put herself in extreme physical and emotional states, testing the limits of what her body and mind could withstand, as well as how the viewing public would interact.
Over the years, Abramović has continued to create challenging and innovative work. She has performed in some of the world's most prestigious museums and galleries, and her work has been featured in numerous films and documentaries and continues to do so to this day.
In this video, we will be taking an intimate look at Abramović's life from her early childhood to the woman she is today. As well discussing her work from the rarely-heard-of to her most infamous, in hopes to understand what drives her to create such extreme and challenging art.
Just how exactly has Marina Abramović become such a complex and fascinating figure? How did she become a pioneer in the field of performance art, and how has her work challenged and inspired audiences for decades?
This is the story and performance art of Marina Abramović.

I am so fascinated by Rhythm 0. I think the most interesting thing to me is how, since Marina was sitting there not reacting to anything, the participants started seeing her as an object instead of a person. Once the performance was over and she became herself again, everyone was reminded that she was actually a person and not some doll they were playing with

what stuck with me is that their reaction showed a lot of possible thoughts they could be having. did they feel shame, guilt? I wonder if any felt fear when she stepped forward? i know it was a rough experience but i see her ability to withstand all of it for that time without giving up on what she wanted to showcase in their behavior. the audience was the medium that she was working with this time. the fact that she bore that treatment then just got up and could walk out makes her seem so powerful.

I have often considered performing in a similar capacity in more of a BDSM-as-performance-art context. Rather, being forced to perform in various and humiliating ways more specifically. No guns or saws but allowing people to do whatever they wanted to me for an allotted period of time, limited only by their creativity and a minimal set of rules. I had often envisioned it as being an ordeal wherein I am brought to tears and screaming anguish by a roomful of strangers. I don't think I'm there yet, but trauma inspires you to do some fairly outlandish things as a means of coping. There are only so many drugs one can experiment with. New thrills and dangers must be applied.

It seems similar to the Stanford prison experiments. When you give people absolute power and authority over another with no limit to what can be done, when all ideals of civilized society are stripped away, you start to see what people really are.

@nuaveblack I suppose I mean in situations where people are given free reign and the tools necessary to do such things. That those in attendance were given implements of pain seems to imply that they were there to be used, and although they may not have been explicitly told to use them, it didn't stop some from using them.

@@nuaveblack I guess I'm kind of interested in Marina's intentions. Beyond the conspiracies and the spirit cooking meme, I never really dived this deep into her early performance art.

On first glance I saw her as someone who perpetuates and revels in evil but knowing how she grew up I see how she exposes it instead. Undoubtedly there are people in the art world that like her because it titillates their sadism but it shouldn't be held against her. She shines a light on the darkness we live amongst. A well done documentary. Thank you!

This has been such a RIVETING series, thank you for covering the life and work of Marina. I'd never heard of her before this serious, but I'm completely fascinated by her now. I so wish she had established some form of aftercare for herself, especially after Rhyth 0, but it sounds like she probably didn't have anyone in her life that could provide that for her at that time.

The heartfelt moment captured with the woman wiping Marina's tears around 25:10 fills my heart with so much hope. It's like a tiny spark of light in a abyss of darkness however trivial the action might appear. I will never forget that picture. The world needs more people like that lady, and I hope Abramović also remember her amongst all the hyenas that exploited her in that unorhtodox fashion in the name of art. Be more like that woman; don't be afraid to pull out your handkershief for somebody else.

    • @Sharkyfinn

Why does the world need more people like that good lady? why don't you say I want to be like her. Because you are selfish, you want good people around you so that you can live a better life but you don't want to be good to others. If every body says that I want to be good rather than looking goodness in other people than world will really be filled with good people rather than selfish ones like you 😊

I think Rhythm 10 would feel familiar to practitioners of Vodou, She said she felt like she had been taken over by a higher force than herself. In Vodou a spirit is said to “mount” and “ride” a
devotee as one might ride a horse. I think her earlier experiences as a child of being locked in a dark closet and 'communicating' with spirits probably prepared her for this event. ... And another interpretation of a star is ... a pentagram. Because the star is in the shape of the human body (head, arms, legs) it is considered a symbol of the microcosm inside the macrocosm. ... Doing without consciousness while awake otherwise runs the risk of making a vacum that another consciousness can occupy. As an artist she's unconsciously recreated the elements of occult possession states without having learned a particular tradition in order to do it. ... What if she had done Rhythm 0 is a country that didn't have a Christian culture? I'm not saying it would have been better or worse, I'm just wondering.

When I read trough my study material i was absolutely shocked for a minute when I read about her and Rhytm 0. It did not suprise me that some people in that audience did what they did, it just made me sad. It‘s incredibly frustrating to know, that if you give people the chance to do something they wouldn‘t get punished for, they do whatever they desire, bad and good. It‘s heartbreaking and I hope people get more interested in Art, because Art sometimes show what the Artist think and how the Viewers think.

That's exactly art, to express true emotions, to reveal the dark and hidden side of our psyche... Rather than superficiality which so much art today is.

Interesting cruel experiments this woman does wich for sure make you reflect somehow on may aspects... getting to know her troubled background makes sense with her acts. Still can't believe this acts are called art.
Disruptiveness shouldn't push on morbidity and an artist would never exhibit himself through it.
Guess I miss her artistic-technical influences and inputs behind this performances... to me, her inputs came all from her painful and frustrated life. A way to scape her reality. Just acts to exhibit her troubled mind and a mirror of her lack of self love, self respect and insanity. Sorry. Can't agree with all your fan commenters.

Demonic, she needs Jesus, He loves her and He died for us all. Let's pray for her and never condemn.
