Hello Sir Greg, I do envy you for that rifle. Always loved the full stock styer's looks and handling almost bought a zastava like it but couldn't get past the way the bolt rattles. Our moose hunts are almost too messed up to even bother with anymore here in Ontario (sick of the government cash grab for everything our forefathers got for free).
Now something more optimistic I'm down to 225 from 260 trying to match you weight loss.
Best of luck for moose as I didn't go this year so I'm living vicariously thru your you tube hunting venture.

Nice shooting Greg and a well thought out combination of rifle, round, loading and optic.

I'm a 348 fan but I understand the move to a bolt rifle with an illuminated reticle. Your 71 winchester and the Steyr 9.3x62 are both outstanding. I won't think less of you for using a bolt rifle but you should look into putting a micro dot on the 71.
I like my 348's a lot and recently acquired a BLR takedown that's grown on me. Probably the best pure hunting bolt rifle I have is an little Ruger 338RCM compact rifle. It's like your Steyr in that it's got good irons, 20" barrel, and it pushes 200 and 225gr bullets out of its compact form at good speeds. It's the best.

Nice rifle for sure in a great caliber!! Got my moose on Tuesday evening at 106m from camp with my Ruger no1 S 9.3x62 with 286gr nosler partition over some IMR4166 coming out at around 2400fps!

@@davidgendron1953 Something about the mid bores that really lays a hurt on the moose.

I also really love a good lever gun. But I also really love a good bolt gun with classic lines such as your Steyr. Especially in the Mannlicher (full stock) configuration.

    Kia Ora from NZ.
What are your iron sights set for?.I'd be interested to know.
I have the same styer in 30.06 & I agree with you. Very nice rifle and relatively light gun for lugging around.
    Thanks.

Love the potato-canon 9.3x62, mellow, but authoritative. Enjoy the hunt! May it be successful!

I’ve had very good success with the Speer bullets in 338 and 358 calibers. I’ve found they penetrate as good as any and haven’t had any fail yet. Nice looking rifle.

The 250 Speer Hotcore has worked really well to 2500fps. Speeded up more it can come apart.

@@north61 I’ve run them up to 2700 at the muzzle in my 338 Federal with good success but velocity at the target will be lower.

You can put a red dot on your 71 Winchester It seems to work fairly good and low light, might look weird but it’s really small not much bigger than the receiver mounted Peepsight, obviously you’re not gonna have time to do all that right now

    • @north61

Yes I have that mount but the Burris Fast Fire 2 didn't prove to be very rugged for me.

Nice that the inexpensive Speer bullet punches way above its weight class. Practice sessions are affordable! 🤑
