Sir Starmer is sending his personal envoy to establish good relations with Mercia, the kingdom of the East Angles, Northumbria, Wessex, the Picts and Scots, Hibernia, Kernow, and those foreigners beyond Offa's Dyke.
No he is sending his "envoy" to tell them all what he is doing, well at least some of what he is is doing.

n.b. Sturgeon would have had to a total moron not to be aware that London would be tapping all her comms --- nuclear sub base, North Sea fossil fuel wealth < corporate power etc. The discrediting of the SNP very useful to Unionists, and Corporate power alike. So the key question is - was she playing a role in the pantomime, OR is she really just really, really stupid (and corrupt)? I haven't looked into the Welsh parallel in depth, but if this method was applied in Scotland and found to be effective.....

It is embarrassing for Labour that the Labour administration in Wales cannot now blame the Tory government in Westminster for all our ills in Wales. Starmer has no desire to improve our lot as he wants all power for himself and his followers. Creating a job for Sue Gray to be envoy for Scotland, Wales , N .Ireland AND the English regions is an insult to the 3 devolved governments.
On hearing the job title Envoy for the Nations and Regions, I too thought that's weird. I last saw the word envoy in use - outside of a period drama - on a cigarettes packet. It reeks of days of empire and I'm sure there's a kind of 'We're running an empire' methodology that's still very influential in Whitehall and Westminster circles.
The coward hasn't got the bollocks to sack her so it's a sideways move into a made up job.

Bristol no longer has a mayor. The position was abolished this year due to widespread public dislike of the actions & policies of particularly the last incumbent. The city has now gone back to more traditional govt by committee

As someone who now lives in the South West having lived in the South East most of my life, it would be much better if he employed someone to listen to our needs to ensure we are not dictated to and have totally inappropriate London centric policies enforced upon us.
The job is to stop her blabbing to the media about how incompetent he is, and that he's as dishonest, corrupt, and lying as much as Boris Johnson.
The nature of her appointment, which seemed to exclude any other suitable candidates for this position, and the actual responsibilities of the role should be the first topic at next PMs questions.

My MP, here in Edinburgh, is Ian Murray who represents me at Westminster. He is also Secretary of State for Scotland so he sits in the cabinet with Starmer and he has a posh building by Waverley Station and another office in London all staffed to help him represent Scotland down there and Westminster up here. So Sue Gray's new job is probably to undermine him and keep him on his toes!

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland already has an appointed Number 10 Secretary of State. Running huge departments over and above the devolved governments. Its a notable point, that only English Mayors were invited to the first meeting in Scotland. Civic and city leaders from Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were excluded. Yet another Westminster talking shop, allied to a large salary and overblown expense accounts.
How did we end up in such a dire situation four years ago after Labour's election rout? The party fielded three candidates for leadership, none of whom seemed terribly clued up, and one of those is now PM. We are scraping the barrel nowadays when a Labour government comes into office without a clear sense of direction, drifting about, lurching from one crisis to another. Electoral reform is the only way out, and without a revolt from the left of politics soon to seize a progressive future for a fairer society I worry where the uniparty will take us.
As Scotland is not a “region” so we don’t need Grey to flap around here.
I think it's great idea to have someone who can visit the regions, share the messages of government in a positive light, and bring back feedback. MPs are not the government, unless they are in the Cabinet. MPs tend to be local centric. Sue Gray's role is one of seeing the bigger picture across the land.

I'm beginning to suspect that our Labour government wish to continue a highly centralised form of government.
The common sense of devolving control to local communities that know what is most needed, and how to source properly to fulfil those requirements is obvious.
Therefore, I suspect that Labour remains committed to giving contracts out to profiteering, useless share holding companies.

Local teams headed by people that care and have expertise, would be cheaper, and provide excellent outcomes.
Outsourcing of these services is immoral,dangerous,cruel and lacks cost effectiveness. Bring back the ethos of service, over profit, and add a huge dollop of common sense please.
One can but wonder if this will be a positive for the SNP - I do hope so.

Quick review. This is the PM who praised the GB Energy initiative through the election and we could see then and now that it a) doesn't provide energy, b) provides very few jobs, and c) is basically an investment vehicle which does not bring benefit to anyone other than investors. This is the government that ignores that taxpayers completely a yearly tax return showing all of their pension income and instead yanks money from pensioners on the basis that they think some earn too much for that but to prove that they are not in that bracket, the government will require them to divulge time and information to claim benefits. So, from those two facts, Starmer has not a clue to what any MP or mayor or devolved government does - he wants to redraft it all in his own terms. He and his government have that arrogance.

If the government can monitor and control our movements by removing personal transport and forcing us to use tracked public transport they will be happy, no matter the cost and pain inflicted. There are, and have been, fake issues designed to scare us into willing submission.

The mistake is in looking for anything other than expediency or opportunism in Starmer's words, deeds or actions.

Having worked in PLC’s , Military , Local & National Government I can say without doubt this is a sideways move to prevent her from turning on him. Except we are the employers of MP’s Prime Minister and now this bizarre cretinous appointment at 170,000 plus benefits is utterly shameful and like the lack of focus on immigration is simply Starmer in full acute narcissistic disorder .
I think that is the reason for the job. But the title shows yet another lack of political ability from him.

It´s a sinecure, there are already tonnes of organisations for collaborative working with the Devolved parliaments and other regional authorities, i.e the Scottish office, the Welsh office, the Local government department.
Whatever could be criticised about the pre-Blair civil service, it was much better than this.
Keir Starmer will become ever more distant and disconnected from the reality of everyday life of the people and will soon appoint an envoy for the cabinet.

I am finding it difficult to respect this man. He seems to be surrounding himself with yes men and yes women. If you agree with me your a friend if you don’t your an enemy. Sometimes you need a friend to tactfully tell you that this or that is not a good move. As far as I can see he is not only ruthless but lacks common decency and everything is done exactly the way he wants it no ifs or buts. He appears to be planting the seeds of his own downfall.

I have no objection to Sue Gray carrying out this role, even on her £170k salary, on the one condition that she performs all her duties on horseback, traversing the King's highways and byways, scroll under her arm, bugle and loudhailer hanging from her saddle, making proclamations from town to town. Perhaps a wellwisher can provide Ms. Gray with a fine wide-brimmed hat with a feather to protect her against the elements - I believe she already possesses a leather jacket. I think this would be faithful to Starmer's original vision of the role. I believe the reason that Starmer does not seem to recognise the many institutions and alternative lines of communication you mention is that to the general populus, these are seen as organs of 'democracy', which he considers an outdated concept that may facilitate 'hate speech' and something that can always be improved upon by an arrangement of his own making.
Puzzling appointment, but possibly more to do with N. Ireland and keeping the peace there, taking into account Sue Gray's previous experience. Ironic, if her peacekeeping skills didn't work in Number 10. Good opportunity to visit old friends at taxpayers' cost?

If this leads to a greater say for devolved countries and more autonomy for regions, then there is some point. That's a big IF, however, and I'm not holding my breath. Seems like a fudge.
Not going to happen. Successive governments have made it very clear that England is Boss. South East England is the seat of power, leaving the rest of the country with some scraps off the table.
