Gibson Standard 50's Les Paul vs. Epiphone Standard 50's Les Paul | Can You Tell the Difference?

  • It's a topic we love to discuss on this channel: can you hear the difference between these two models? They're very similar in some ways, very different in others. Does the price disparity between a Gibson and an Epiphone lie solely in the name on the headstock? Do different pickups, different factories, or different wiring account for almost $2000 of separation? Listen up and tell us what you think. Both of these guitars are great pieces for the right player, and if you are looking for a great entry level guitar (or even just another cool instrument for your collection) we are firm believers that Epiphone is truly closing the gap between these two classic brand names.

    Great video and excellent playing!
    I would like to make a suggestion tho: when you do comparisons, I think it would be helpful to switch the audio/video back to back every few seconds so we could better tell the difference in the tones.
    I saw some comments saying the playing was a bit long winded or self indulgent, and honestly I don't have a problem with that! You wanna shred on that thing, by all means do so, but it gets really difficult to retain the memory of one guitar when the examples you give are so long. That's why I suggested going back and forth.
    Because of this I could barely tell the difference between the two watching the video how you intended it to be watched; however when I would skip around the video I could hear more of a noticeable difference.

      It doesn’t even sound close to me. The Epiphone sounded muffled or choked compared to the Gibson.
      The truth is that you get what you pay for. I have had/played both over the past 30+ years, and it boils down to how much money you have to spend and can you live with the budget guitar.
      I would rather have one Gibson than 5 Epiphones or even 3 that are heavily modded. But to each their own. If Epiphone was a “bad” guitar they wouldn’t sell as well as they do, so it’s a good investment for anyone who wants a decent guitar under $1,000. I just don’t see how anyone can compare a Camaro to a Ferrari and say that they’re basically the same car and not worth the huge price difference.

Wide neck, long neck tenon would seem to only help sustain. No weight relief. Bought it used for $399, no case. It's heavy just like I prefer them

    The main tonal difference listening to the video without seeing the screen is the clarity on the Gibson, but it is in the wiring and pickups. Having owned both Gibson and Epi Les Pauls if you want the look and the feel the Epi goes a long way and leaves you with budget for upgrades.

    I have been testing Epiphone Les Paul guitars in the past few days and I am impressed by the quality improvement - they are really "sexy" and sound well too - just a question about the tuning issue that usually Gibson and "Gibson like " guitars have - Ant comments - Opinion advise about this Issue? - Thanks for the video = Mauro

    Cooper, great video. The Epiphone sounded a little less substantial than the Gibson; however, the difference was small. If the Epiphone was played without the Gibson for comparison, it would be difficult to say that there was a big difference. The points you made regarding the longevity of the instruments and the future value are well taken. I have been of the opinion that if you are a serious guitar player, you should get the best instrument that you can afford. However, if the budget does not allow, the Epiphone would be an excellent choice. Once again, you did a good job.

    i just played a bunch of gibsons and epiphones in the guitar store. For sure the setup, and fretwork were better on the gibsons but not by that much. i think a good set up, a little work on the frets plus some better pickups would get you really really close to the gibson.

    Ok yeah there is a difference. Is it the pickups? or the on board electronics, or the pots used to set the tone? Did I like the Gibson sound more? Yes I did, but would I know the difference when played as part of a band? I don't think I would but I would not be the one playing.

    Just picked up my ordered lefty '50's heritage cherry sunburst les Paul from guitar center in orange California it came from Missouri, I lowered the action and raised the pickups. Stock I think it s plays pretty good, I had a lefty Gibson Les Paul '79 and I gotta say the sustain is pretty good on the epi the Gibson was pretty chunky but in 79 they weren't doing weight relief at all, I'm happy with the epi and dropping $3,000 on another Gibson vs $750.00 on the epi much easier on the wallet.

    Big difference in terms of sound in favour of the Gibson here, I felt. That being said, last time I went to my music shop, I preferred the feel of the satin neck of the Gibson LesPaul tribute 2018, compared to a LesPaul standard that was £1000 more 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @markellegood9697

      I was complete opposite as much as I liked my 2019 Tribute the Traditional was so far superior it wasn't even close but there is no wrong in either. I just have the opinion that there is a Gibson LP that will make any Epiphone pale in comparison. I played fender for years and even have a EBMM but it ain't no Gibson LP.

  • @graeme1744

    I think the only difference was the pickups that had a nice warm tone but if they were not side by side would a everyday player pickup on the sound. It's like when you buy a new TV and there are so many to choose but very little difference until you look close at the screens. Hope that makes sense. I understand that Gibson are a classic Guitar and you can't go wrong, but there is definitely nothing wrong with epiphone these days as long as you buy a decent standard model.

    First-Very good guitar playing! Great to listen to demos when the guitar player is that good. Of course Gibson better win this comparison IMO, but Epiphone has its place too. If you buy a great looking Epiphone with a good neck, new pickups and locking tuners go a long way to make it an awesome guitar and still come in cheaper than Gibson.

    Dare I say it but the flame maple top on the Epiphone looks better. Looks like it has more depth and definition to the flame. Upgrade the pickups and I am.sure you'd be a lot closer sound wise.

    • @karlmiller3623

    • @richardshank7659
      @richardshank7659 3 роки тому +2

      @@karlmiller3623 technically it’s not. It’s just a thin veneer off a really nice piece of flame maple. The depth of the grain on other guitars looks nice cause it’s actually a thick full piece of flame maple whereas the epiphones mostly have a slightly thicker than paper thickness so you don’t get the depth kind of like you just get the stripey part of the flame maple look.

    I actually much prefer the finish of the Epiphone over the Gibson. Surprisingly I think it has a better top burst.
    As for the sound? The Epiphone sounded quieter to me! Was the volume settings the same? If that's the case I guess the pickups are lower output or the pots and electronics are just different. Epiphone didn't sound bad by any means, the Gibby had more low end for sure.

    • @emartinezr
      @emartinezr 6 місяців тому

      Yes, the Gibson sounds louder; also in person. It has both more bass and a sharper top end. More grit. More sustain. The strings and sound resonate a bit more.
      The top on the Epiphone is a veneer, so it's simpler and cheaper to get a nice looking top. On the Gibson, the look that you see is the actual maple cap.

    I don’t shop in the $2500 or more range. I do have an American Strat but if I was buying a LP (currently looking) weight relief is important for me. So I would probably look at a Tribute or a Studio. Might even look at the 59 Epi. Just difficult at the moment to get your hands on them to compare. I did see a 59 Epi in person. Quality seemed very good, was a bit on the heavy side but not as heavy as the $2800 Gibson the salesman’s was trying to talk me into. I didn’t have enough time to plug it in and play. I think I would prefer a Gibson though it would be a lower end model and not as fancy looking.

    Nice playing and good video, but I hate these A/B's. There's a difference. The Epi output is very noticeably louder. In my mind, the PUP's in the challenge guitar need to be adjusted to the output level of the PUP's in the pricier reference guitar. Play-ability issues aside, when considering tone, it's impossible to tell if these axes are competitive in terms of sound without the proper PUP setup on the Epi. Pickup and pole height make a HUGE difference.

  • @dexgang
    @dexgang 3 роки тому +9

    There is a huge sonic difference between the Epiphone and the Gibson, still, and it’s over UA-cam, on a decrepit iPad mini’s speaker. BUT, the Epiphone itself seems to have an improved sound over its past iterations! Especially the neck pickup!
    Before I would have advised people to stay with Gibson if they’re buying a Les Paul, but with this new lineup of theirs I’d tell people to probably buy an Epiphone, then to replace the pickups with Gibson ones after the warranty runs out. Good job, Epiphone!
