I have found that you can find several good plastic plants that make better stencils than the natural plants do. Being made of plastic, they are stiffer than natural plants and don't move while spraying. Plus, you can save them in your cammo kit for later touch ups or other projects.
Lol , thats Fred , i was in the check out line , like a week after thanksgiving at the dollar general store. I looked over next to me , there was 3 boxes of said stuff , dirt cheap . What was 2-5 dollars i got for less than a dollar . Like 50 or 75 cents . I loaded up on different leaf patterns and such , great deal ! Lol the lady looked at me kinda funny ' like would you a man be buying all this stuff . Then she couldn't help her self and did ask . My reply , im gonna paint Freedom . My rifle . I gotta say ive seen some great paint jobs , but Nate killed it here , especially with off the shelf walmart paint
Hey Nate, I used your method on my air rifle, and it came out great. Did it about 8 months ago, now decided to redo it. I have busted about 12 squirrels trying to get my peaches and pecans!, they can't see that camo job!!! Thanks again Bro...
Looks good to me. My experience with Cerakote hasn’t been very good as far as durability goes. The great thing about a rattle can job, other than cost, is the ease of touching it up if needed. Thanks for the video from Central N.C.
Excellent work. I relied heavily on this video when I originally painted my FV-SR over a year ago. Watched it again today as a brush-up because I'm about to swap out the factory stock. Thanks for sharing your work!
Must've watched 20 camo paint videos and this is one of the best if not the best. It's more than a camo job it's like a landscape portrait by a famous painter.
Wow! That's a pretty humbling statement. Makes me glad I actually filmed the whole ordeal. It's been watched way more than I ever expected it to be. Appreciate you dropping by and leaving a comment.
Another tip, I see you're having trouble seeing the paint with the bushy pine leaf branch. Try snipping off some of it's branches to make it less bulky and more flat. The paint is having trouble spraying past the bushy stuff. And to those new to spray cans, and want to reuse the remaining paint in the can later, turn the can upside down and spray until paint stops flowing out of the nozzle. The nozzle and tube inside shouldn't clog up the next time you use it then. I'm spraying my RC tank in camo, great video thanks!
8 років тому+1
That turned out as good if not better than some of the commercial camouflage paint jobs I've seen that cost same as your rifle.
Well done! I can't wait to paint my Savage .17wsm like that. Absolutely a wonderful paint job. It just looks great with the depth and how the dusting of paint gives little details while blending it all together
Its really nice that you don't take out hardly any of the footage from the video. When you can see everything that is done specifically, it really helps.
The best DIY camo job I've seen. This rifle turned out perfect. Great contrast in the colors and I really like the soft edges left from using natural foliage instead of stencils. Great job!
I was thinking your base color was too light as well but I was wrong, that paint job turned out great. Much better than most I've seen and right up there with the best. Thanks for sharing.
I've looked a dozens and dozens of camo videos and I think this is the one I'll use as may guide for doing my AR. I also have the FVSR in .22 long and will do it also.
Looks great. I always start with dark first and lighter colors after. It adds depth. When you look at the woods your lighter colors are out front and darker shadows as you look deeper in.
I have found that giving the foliage you plan on using a pretty solid coat of paint a few hours before you use it as a stencil really helps stiffen the branches and makes the leaves a bit heavier so they don't blow around as much. You don't have to use your cammo paint, some el cheapo rattlecan of whatever works just fine, just trying to add some weight and painted-on stiffness. I also prefer to work dark to light, but your end product looks pretty solid. Also, for any of the folks that have commented that are worried about a clear coat making it look "not cammo", they do make matte/flat clear, just fyi. Using this method, you can use gloss colored paints, but as long as you use a matte clear coat at the end, the whole job looks matte/flat. I did this on a spear gun that i wanted blues and greys. Not a lot of shades of blue out there that come in matte finish, so i shot the gloss blues, and then finished with matte clear, and it came out just as what you'd expect from a matte blue camo finish. my 2 pence.
A lot of people comment about foliage moving when sprayed in position. I found a real neat trick to stop that is to use VERY small blobs of bluetac on the back of the leaves and press them down in position before you spray. Then remove them gently before reclaiming the bluetac to reuse. The leaves or cut out shapes dont move and you can also build up ontop of the first items with a little more if you don't want to rwmove them as you go. Hope this helps! Its cheap and real easy.
you can get awesome fake leaf and branch patterns at stores like michaels, hobby lobby even walmart. they dont blow off when spraying and you get crisper edges and better looking patterns. they are dirt cheap too like $3.00 each. if you use the camo colors from rustoleum or krylon, definitely use spray clear as they tend to dry chalky and scrape off easily. the clear makes a big difference
Now I have seen a lot of camo rifle jobs on you tube BUT I must say yours is the BEST. By Far. I have a few Savages myself also Marlins - all Bolt Actions. They are the most accurate. Sincerely, JAMES.
I've probably watched at least 30 videos this afternoon, and this one definitely looks the best. Great job brother!👍 All I want to do is the slide on my pistol, so this gave me assurance that I can do it. Thanks for sharing! ☮️
Good video presentation as you built up the patterns and keep in mind that what you see just painted will diminish and get the lasting effect once it flashes off and starts to dry. Dusting with other colors lightly help blend or mesh in the colors to give it a more natural look in the end. A coat of clear coat mat also helps with a light dusting maybe max 2x from a distance to flatten and dull the colors.
Nice job, looks great. Also, this was the best demo I've seen of actual show & tell of the process...of how you did it anyway. Gives me the confidence to do some camo projects myself. Thanks brother.
Good stuff... I've found a secret for prepping the stock to ensure good adhesion, a tougher and more durable overall paint job. After cleaning the stock of oils (I always use rubber gloves to make sure no hand oils get on) I spray the stock with an adhesion promoter, used for plastic, vinyl, chrome, wood, etc. Spray cans available from Amazon, if you can't find locally... A few lighter coats, a few minutes apart then a final coat, wait ten minutes then do your base coat. It makes a HUGE difference. Works great for painting the plastic interior parts of cars, too, so the paint doesn't just rub off. I've had to remove the paint from a stock I did like that, it was tough. Thanks for showing the sticktoitiveness needed to produce a good product. Thanks!!
NICE... The whole trick to doing camo is to use what is around you. Leaves, ferns, grasses, whatever the background is, you need to mimic it. Very nice job Nate the bone buster
For de-greasing your gun parts, here are two excellent options. 1) "Brake-Clean" (sometimes spelled klean) from the auto parts store is, by design, an excellent product for removing oils, grease, water, dirt, etc. from your gun parts. Your brakes on your car must run grease and oil free and this is what the mechanics use. It will leave a very clean and dry surface on your gun parts. Try some on each surface, first, as some plastic materials (very few in the gun world) may be affected by the cleaner. 2) TSP (tri-sodium-phosphate)... The stuff that made your laundry sparkling white in the 70s until the eco-paranoids banned it because it makes a temporary and harmless foam when it hits moving water (remember those anti-phosphate comercials in the 70s showing a bit of foam on a river bank?). What they never told you is that phosphates are naturally occurring and ultimately harmless to the ecology but, I digress. If you're cleaning plastics and, polymers in particular, scrubbing them down with a TSP solution will remove any manufacturing residues, oils from handling, etc. and is a GREAT prep. It's still available on the net and in some rural-type stores and will, once again, make your whites by-gum actually white! Any plastic parts, from chairs to car interiors, can be cleaned and painted in this way. When you're done cleaning gun parts with the TSP solution, rinse with clear water then dry it in the oven on low for 20 mins. Some will say to use acetone but, some plastics are affected by that much faster than by the brake cleaner. Use with caution.
I just found this, and I agree, this is one of the best camo videos hands down. I am painting myself and I like the idea you used. Thanks for the information.
so I'm sitting here surfing CSC while I'm watching camo vids on UA-cam, and out of nowhere comes the tactical Wilson racquet!! I've been browsing Dorton's thread daily for about a week now. just making sure this is what I really want to do to my AR. great job bud, and I'll see you on the board. zukimon out...
that's one of the best camo jobs i've seen on YT...great job,has lots of depth, looks very 3d...a little on the dark side for my area but that's easily cured..great job
Brother you did an amazing job with the Camo I wasn't sure at first if I was going to like it but when you were done I just think it turned out phenomenal! I'm going to try it on my RRA Ar 10 thx for sharing!
Nice, it's a work of art. Found good results cleaning them with brake cleaner and using primer to help the paint stay on. Staff Sergeant, US.Army, Combat Infantry Sniper, multiple tours
Not bad Nate! You're right about starting with a darker base coat! It adds a better sense of depth to the patterns and looks more natural! Try using a single sprig of the cedar/evergreen and just move it around to different angles. You'll get a better pattern and get more depth without having to spray so much to get through the clump of branches.
Looks great. I am planning to camo one of my rifles . I like the way you used the natural foliage as stencils . My project rifle is a Savage MkII that I picked up on clearance at dicks. She is wood and blue so Im going to sand it down and prime before I apply the rustoleum . Im also going to camo the scope , an older Bushnell scopechief , that I think will add a nice touch. Im even thinking about doing the bipod. Thanks again for a great how to video.
+John Conway Sounds like you've got the perfect rifle for such a project. I also camo'd a scope to go with this rifle in the same pattern. It completed the package. Appreciate you watching.
Turned out great!!! I'm getting ready to camo my Savage .22-250... Debating on whether to do the barrel or not... This video may have just convinced me to do it...
I'm guessing you were in a hurry with the clear coat 'cause squirrel season was about to open... LOL!! Nice work - turned out very nice!! Hope you had a good season. I'll send all the turkey mites, skeeters and ticks down to your neck-o-the-woods!! Great job on the rifle!!
Looks good. Personally I like some leafiness and some patterns to break the total leafy appearance. If you are upright hunting in the woods in the spring and summer this is good, but adding a little grass, tan and light green, would set this up for woodlands, open areas adjacent to woods in all but winter season. I like sand as a base coat, then diagonal zones of brown and od green, before getting leafy, twiggy and grassy. Some where in there I want some hazy irregular grid pattern worked in between the veggies! Lol.
Looks good that's way better than I can do in this style. Black lines actually do look natural if you do the cord wrapping technique. I just hear it often about black looking natural.
LOOKS REALLY GOOD BUDDY, DID MY 9MM CARBINE SIMILAR TO THIS PAINT SCHEME. SPONGE DID MINE. GREAT PAINT WITH THE CAMMO PAINT. REALLY GOOD STUFF IF YOU CLEAR COAT IT WITH THE MATTE CLEAR COAT,
Ive found if you throw a latex glove on, and just hold the foliage down with one hand, by the "stem" and paint with the other, you can keep them pretty still. But yours looks great. Fun to do this kind, because its nearly impossible to mess up. Thanks!
I found through trial and error that less is more. using more than 2 types of flora is trouble and often it looks blotchy and the patterns tend to get all muddled up together. it ends up looking like mother nature barfed on your gun. When it comes to leaves find the smallest ones you can find in the tree, use them and remember use the dark colours first light ones last not vice versa. try it you will see the difference right away.
I have painted close to 50 shot guns and rifles!! And get paid to do it! And I do the vice versa! Lightest color for the base coat!! To the darkest being black last for shadowing. But very little is best!
Got a junior airrifle I'm sorting out for my niece ,had it to pieces little bit of tlc ,,,next is putting it back together an doing it cammo for her ,,, Took some tips from this,,ie small foliage makes a better impression. 👍
great video but you want large color splotches with high contrast ie. light tan and dark brown to break the silhouette of the rifle at a distance if not it will all blob out to the dominant color. good job though this is how I did my rifles just more contrast
thanks for the video man I just got done painting a beater shotgun I picked up pretty cheap (was in terrible shape) looks awesome now! I used the same brands and color you did I noticed nearly my entire stock turned out frosted and white almost because I went overboard on the krylon clear coat BUT as I was cleaning it with some CLP I discovered two things one too much of the CLP strips the paint off (any paint actually) BUT I sprayed some CLP on a cloth and lightly rubbed the really frosted white areas from the krylon and now the whole gun matches in color so since I went overboard it stripped a small amount of it off so it all matches now and CLP is cheap oh and denatured alcohol works well to degrease
I just realized every other paint job applied the darker color first making the leaves dark and background lighter. I see others say that's the right way to go, I think going lighter first is one of the reasons your paint turned out better.
That looks amazing, great job man, I got a C-TAC VSR-10 Pro airsoft rifle that I'm looking to camouflage this summer along with my NCStar EURO Series 3-12x50E scope that has red illumination.. Again, great job, amazingly simplistic yet detailed tutorial! Thanks!
Here I am in 2024 using your video for my panzer 12 gauge G4. Thank you for taking the time to shoot this video.
I’m glad it’s still useful all this time later.
Best Camo DIY Job I have seen on UA-cam in 4 hours of looking. Great Work.
+Jim Fowler I appreciate you saying so.
Jim Fowler agreed
natebonebusta i also agree. Best camo paint on youtube.
I agree.....been watching others and this one is a hit.
Agreed that’s a beautiful job you’ve done..great works👍🏼
This is hands down one of the best camo jobs I have seen! Good job dude!

I've been looking at rifle camo videos, as others have mentioned, and this is by far the best. Good Job, Man...looks real.
110% the top best camouflage in youtube so far...good job bro..this is pure talent
Appreciate the compliment. I think I may have just gotten lucky.
Its really nice that you don't take out hardly any of the footage from the video. When you can see everything that is done specifically, it really helps.
Hella fun camoing guns! I have good luck with laying a two color base, think barber pole. Then use a couple different colors to spray over the debris.
The blurriness gives it a great 3D effect. I'll be doing this myself. Looks great.
I love this camo paint job, by far one of the best on UA-cam. I did the same pattern on my M14+ FAL.
The best DIY camo job I've seen. This rifle turned out perfect. Great contrast in the colors and I really like the soft edges left from using natural foliage instead of stencils. Great job!
Thanks! I've been stunned by how it turned out, and how the video has been so well received.

I recently checked out over a dozen vids on camo painting a rifle. This paint job blows them all away. Great job.
I appreciate it. I was stunned with how well it turned out myself.
Best gun camo job I have seen, thus far. Excellent work, brother. I like that you added the clear coat.
Best camo paint ever seen!
Thanks.

Buzz Clark Good deal. I surprised myself.
I've probably watched at least 30 videos this afternoon, and this one definitely looks the best.
Great job brother!👍
All I want to do is the slide on my pistol, so this gave me assurance that I can do it.
Thanks for sharing! ☮️
Looks really good. One of the best I've seen so far on UA-cam and I've watched almost everything. The break up is really nice
Good video presentation as you built up the patterns and keep in mind that what you see just painted will diminish and get the lasting effect once it flashes off and starts to dry. I’m glad it worked out cause it was my first go at something like this. Glad it was helpful. Thanks for taking time out to watch.
Thanks!!
That’s a very helpful tip for any future projects. Thanks for posting it.
From all the videos I have watched, this to me is my favourite. 👊
NICE... The whole trick to doing camo is to use what is around you. Leaves, ferns, grasses, whatever the background is, you need to mimic it. Very nice job Nate the bone buster
Thanks for watching. What you are saying is exactly right.
That's the best camo job I've seen so far and I watched tons of videos... Great job...
Best camo job I’ve seen so far! Really looks great!!
You're right, my thumb was also painted over, blended in right with the stock. Good observation, as I'd never caught that. Glad you liked it.
Excellent, I hope it works out for you!
Excellent video. I'm painting the same rifle and this is exactly the "how to" I was looking for. Thanks!
That looks great. I wasn't sure as you were mid way thru but it turned out nice with nice depth in the camo. Great narration as well.
so I'm sitting here surfing CSC while I'm watching camo vids on UA-cam, and out of nowhere comes the tactical Wilson racquet!! that's one of the best camo jobs i've seen on YT...great job,has lots of depth, looks very 3d...a little on the dark side for my area but that's easily cured..great job
That's the beauty of the spray on camo job. If it doesn't turn out right the first time just change things up. I appreciate the comment.
Looks good. I like the leaf idea. Wish I had more around my place to use. Just have big maple leafs. Thanks for the video.
That came out gorgeously!!! I am trying to figure out how to camo paint my rifles and shotguns. Good job on that.
Man nice tutorial finally a good video! Your giving me the courage to paint my maverick 88
That turned out extremely bad ass
I think u found your calling, great job!
The best video I've watched so far and that's been several.
Brother you did an amazing job with the Camo I wasn't sure at first if I was going to like it but when you were done I just think it turned out phenomenal! I'm going to try it on my RRA Ar 10 thx for sharing!

Thank you for your service, SSGT Taylor.
Very nice, thank you for taking the time to go through this, have a great week from Montana !
Glad it was helpful. Thanks to you for taking your time out to watch this!
You know Dan Miller in Kalispell?
Awesome, glad it worked out. I know that fella is thrilled his BB gun has a camo pattern now.
I'm doing the same thing on two of my guns and i'm finding it produces nice results, not as well as you've done though. Great job.
Really awesome and unique camo job man!
I've got a few spots, in high wear areas that are scuffed but I haven't been abusive to it either. Thanks for checking the video out.
Great job man,looks really cool
Dude. Don't get too carried away with the camo or you're gonna lose your rifle man! That came together nice.
I was worried when you started with the lighter colors, but this turned out great. Thanks for the video. Please do a one year wear/durability video.

The flat matt clear was a light-bulb moment for sure. Thanks.
I've been using the Natural Foliage technique for over 25 years.
Add Dark Green under the Cedar
Looks great bud , I'm trying to work up the courage to do this on my savage mkII
Good job! Liked it so well that I am going to do the 452. I hope it turns out as well as yours.
best camo job on here and i've watched a bunch of them
Did my Mossberg .410 yesterday using your basic methods....came out well! Happy Labor Day 2020,
Excellent, glad it worked out! Appreciate you taking time out to watch and dropping in to comment.
I'm guessing you were in a hurry with the clear coat 'cause squirrel season was about to open... LOL!!
Nice work - turned out very nice!! Hope you had a good season. I'll send all the turkey mites, skeeters and ticks down to your neck-o-the-woods!!

Thanks!
Good tip! Appreciate you watching.
Looks awesome, I think I may try that. I really like the way it came out. Great job.
Awesome Job, that is also a Fantastic gun, add a AR-15 muzzle on the end , I did on mine and it changes the looks of the gun altogether.....
Thanks for this! You've got me rethinking how I will do my rifle.
Thanks for the insight.
natebonebusta very cool camo job!!!
I have painted close to 50 shot guns and rifles!! And get paid to do it! And I do the vice versa! Lightest color for the base coat!! To the darkest being black last for shadowing. But very little is best!
This thing looks 3D now. Amazing paint job!
Turned out to be very beautiful. Just like you said, don't like a certain spot, you can fix it right up with different colors
Mark Cardenas Thanks.
Got a junior airrifle I'm sorting out for my niece ,had it to pieces little bit of tlc ,,,next is putting it back together an doing it cammo for her ,,,
Took some tips from this,,ie small foliage makes a better impression. 👍
that looks totally awsome thanks for the tutorial, excellent work pal. 👍
Wow that turned out really good. Nice job! Free it gets work it'll look even better
great video but you want large color splotches with high contrast ie. light tan and dark brown to break the silhouette of the rifle at a distance if not it will all blob out to the dominant color. good job though this is how I did my rifles just more contrast
Lonnie Smoak thanks for the tip.
great paint work. fabulous attitude while Ur painting makes a big difference with the end results. thumbs up to you my friend
+Shane Green I appreciate it. Hope it was helpful.
thanks for the video man I just got done painting a beater shotgun I picked up pretty cheap (was in terrible shape) looks awesome now!
That turned out real good
Cheers
Tim
one of the better videos on camo. thanks man hope my project turns out as well as yours.
+The Kidd Ramirez Glad you have the inspiration to tackle your rifle. Good luck.
That is fantastic Nate, unreal work.
Great Video. Easy to do from look of it. Thinking of doing this to my stock next month.
Ron Schaffner It was a fun project.
I just realized every other paint job applied the darker color first making the leaves dark and background lighter. I see others say that's the right way to go, I think going lighter first is one of the reasons your paint turned out better.
Great job, ive been lookin for good techniques and yours is hands down the best one, thanks!
Thanks!
+Taylor_MadeRC1986 Glad it could be of some service to you. Hope your projects turn out exceptional!
