    Multihulls love the angles. If you had put the main up and run 120-140true wind angle instead of deep with no main you would have got there in 1/3 the time

    • @TrimaranSpirit
      @TrimaranSpirit  5 років тому +1

      Hayden Braddock not 1/3 the time but your correct it would have been faster along with wetter, more stressful and harder on the boat and her two crew 😊

    Great passage. Amazing film of thunderstorm. Can't wait for UK winter to end and springtime launch... Can I jack up my tri and find a trolley for a DIY launch to save craning her in, like Spirit?!

    • @TrimaranSpirit
      @TrimaranSpirit  7 років тому

      Windchaser yeah the lightning looks amazing as long as it's at a distance 😊 I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to put your Tri on a trolley as we did as long as you don't have anything protruding from the hull that gets in the way and your trolley is strong you should be ok fine.

    Is there a risk in big swells that one of the floats could pitch under the water and pull the boat over? What happens when one of the outer floats go under the water?

    • @z_actual
      @z_actual 3 роки тому

      yes there is always a risk, however slight, the lee float will dig in, but usually the boat will just keep momentum and plough through the wave with the float submerged.
      Its quite normal for a tri to operate like this. Personally I think a cat in the same situation, despite have more available buoyancy is far more likely to stall her lee side because she presents more surface area. It is still a debate as to which is the safer of the two, but usually structural strength is the more important aspect, which you to fail far more commonly back when offshore multihulls were gaining in popularity60 or 70 years ago.

    You said .. averaged 6 knots 960 nm days to complete in 6 days .. 2 questions: what was your highest/max speed ? and what would it have taken in a monohull of comparable size ?
    thanks.

    • @TrimaranSpirit
      @TrimaranSpirit  7 років тому +3

      Zone Television our highest speed was just over 20kts in a squall very short lived just a burst of speed. Hard to compare us to a mono as there are so many different types but on average we do double a monos speed and more depending it's design, displacement and hull shape. There were a few other boats that did this passage and most commented on how they had to motor for more than 50% where as we sailed the 99% of the passage.

    • @ZoneTelevision
      @ZoneTelevision 7 років тому +1

      Jason Gard This is very interesting ..
      Seems to me (based on the hundreds of videos I have watched n Trimarans_ that the real sacrifice is Comfort vs Speed.
      While trimarans are less accommodating than Cats or Mono’s the rewards are arriving at your destinations in half the time.
      I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Corsairs and Farriers as well though i understand you have to be more attentive to changing conditions in a trimaran so as to not get yourself into trouble as these are very responsive to wind conditions.
      Thank you for responding.

    • @TrimaranSpirit

      Zone Television yes trimaran's aren't for everyone Spirit is incredibly small on the interior but we have what we need. We will do it while we are young and while we can. We love sailing!! For us the rewards we get and the feelings that sailing a tri like Spirit creates far outweigh the complications and costs of a larger boat that doesn't sail. If your ever around the areas we are you'd always be welcome to come sailing and to try it out 😊 all the best!
