Aardman just put out an Over the Garden Wall anniversary tribute which perfectly captured the show’s tone and aesthetic, so I can easily see them dialling that up to 11 for Pokemon.
I find it likely. I imagine Pokemon are doing this in order to bolster their European demographic, so it would make sense to just let Aarman work their weird humor magic.
What makes me hopeful that this will be the case is that the press release Arlo read in the video said that Aardman is "Bringing their unique style of storytelling to the Pokemon World."
Considering legends ZA is set in Kalos (France) the time for a cheese Pokémon is nigh. My pitch is a split evolution for Alcremie that’s fairy/poison. Call it Fromagic or something.
Aardman did a over the garden wall short recently and it was on model to the original design so it’s hard to see them not doing the same for the Pokemon show
Yeah! @@DMacB42 it's just 3 minutes long, but it's on UA-cam. Just search Over The Garden Wall Aardman, worth a watch, and a good example that they really could go any style for this project.
I think it's safe to say Pokemon Company will have the Aardman guys keep the Pokemon creatures themselves on model. The Trainers are what I'm not currently certain of how they're going to design them.
I hadn’t heard about this, but the concept of funny clay people throwing little pokeballs and little clay Pokémon like a Wooper is so cool to me. I’m not much of a Pokémon fan, but I absolutely ADORE Stop Motion. I grew up with Wallace and Gromit, the Shaun the Sheep show was always a fun watch, and while I may not have fully understood what was happening, Pirates Band of Misfits was great. This collab could be incredible, and I assume it’s going to take so long because of how long of a process Stop Motion is. I am so excited for this, this truly has been A Grand Day. 🧀
I think Aardman is sufficiently beloved this announcement can hold hype for that long. All they’ll need to do is drip feed shots and second long segments and they’ll easily ride the wait until 2027. Like, for a lot of people in their late twenties/early thirties, this is such a monumental mashup of childhood titans that the wait will be worth it.
the pokemon will probably look on model, with a nice clay texture, and it'll be the people that get aardman-ified. also i love love LOVE the idea of a pokemon creature comforts!
I hope all of the Pokémon have the the signature wide clay mouth that they use. Pretty excited for this honestly, every time they make clay sculpts of Pokémon for the TCG it's always charming so having animated shorts with clay should be fun.
"You know when you really wanna watch something so you put it on the back burner because you want to be in the right mood?" Oh yes, I know that feeling all too well.
(American here) I heard a while ago that Aardman was running out of that special clay material they use for their movies, as their manufacturer shut down & they've apparently only got "enough supplies for just one more film." That was a while ago, so maybe something's changed, but I just remember thinking that British culture wouldn't be the same without them. Aardman really is an important cornerstone of modern UK filming.
@monstersociety3360 damn I hadn't heard of that. Yh losing them would really hurt, Aardman really is a part of a lot of our childhoods and even adult life.
next thing I want is a Zelda game with cutscenes in the style of nichijou skits, like you get a dragon tear and watch a weirdly well animated cutscene about link trying to break open a melon
Maybe the human characters will have that goofy style with the big mouths but the pokemon I think will be just really well done claymation. I think of the bunnies in curse of the wererabbit, they know how to do texture.
Aardman also collaborated with Lucasfilm to produce a short for Star Wars Visions. Great episode of that show, and it was so charming and funny. They really did a great job respecting the source material while also poking fun at the franchise.
Im happy that the day before this was announced, i already drew a collab of them for the new movie coming out for my Mom, since she loves the show and her fav mon is Mimikyu. Glad to know the universe was on board with me for this. A Matter of Loaf and Dachsbun
Seeing how pokemon is so willing to work with other studios and in different artstyles (the 3d pokemon TCG miniseries “Pokemon: Path to the Peak, Pokemon Concierge, Pokemon x Concierge, Poketoons) I feel like they can be gearing up to their own Pokemon “Stars Wars Visions” or “Batman Gotham Knights.” It’s about time and I’d Love to see shorts that talk about sides of the pokemon world that doesn’t get seen usually. I know People would say Pokemon Generations but that’s pretty much the same art style and just follows the games. Give me serious medical drama with Nurse Joys, Let’s see a very artsy Pokemon Snap story, A small emotional Musical with the Pokemon Contests, a fun slice of life with trainers making sandwhichs, the antics of a frustrated Machamp crossing guard trying to move a Snorlax from a 4 way intersection. Stuff like that. Give me more of the everyday world building of pokemon that Pokemon Concierge does. :)
Ooo, just a thought about pokemon in claymation - one of my favorite types of pokemon TCG art are the clay model photos taken in real environments. That's definitely a direction they could take it.
I hope we get Eiscue with a little rubber glove on its head to make it look like a Combusken that then chases the Professor and his dog around on a toy train
Curse of the Wererabbit was about 1.5 hours long and took 5 years to make, so it's possible that it could be around half that length in total, but who knows!
well, not a Wallace and Gromit joke, but... Raticate: I used to work up top. Big shampoo job. ...I was an Alolan Raticate when we started... still, it cleared up me dandruff!
Why is Chicken Run heralded as such a classic? I saw it ONCE as a child and the scene where that one fat hen gets excuted and the next you see is her skeleton as she has been eaten by the farmers... it traumatized me and made me steer clear of claymation since.
Ok ok what if they make like creature comforts but it was like a mystery dungeon movie/show so the Pokemon would be talking and everything but it would make sense
All this talk now about Pokémon and Stop Motion Animation has now got me wanting some sort of Indi Animation Studio and Classic Cell Shaded Animated Series Collab. I remember a lot of Artists and content creator who've taken part in Indi Animation Shows like Helluvaboss, The Amazing Digital Circus, Lackadaisy, etc that have said before they would like to someday try to create something that only Cell Shaded Animation can manage to achieve that sadly has been lost to the digital age and can never be replicated with even the most advanced future world technology. There has been a growing desire of people in the field of Animation who grew up with the different Hannah Barbera shows and Swat Kats and different DC Superhero series and such from the 1990's and early 2000's to try and revive this experience that now a whole generation of kids will never know about or feel that magical experience. There's just something in the Original Transformers series type of Movies that just can never be replaced and if there's anyone who's aware of that and willing to try and do it justice by properly bringing it back even just one last time, it's Pokémon. I nean they stuck with the whole brightly colored anime rush lines backgrounds all the way up until the Black and White Anime not because it was the creators refusing to adapt and change with the times but because it was always a part of something core and the very soul to the Pokémon franchise from the the day they decided to have the biggest new main media format after the video games and Manga. It would also be a very symbolic kind "passing of the torch to the next generation of Creators" that I feel the original Writer of the Pokémon anime and first few movies would have wanted and would be very proud of. As there is rightfully so growing sentiment that he was definitely the unsung hero of the franchise for tye longest time who was in fact wronged multiple ways and times and never really had his wishes realized before he passed away. Finally one last thing. In Legends: Z-A or another mainline series game, we HAVE to have an NPC Trainer Battle against a Gentleman named Wallace who has a Dubwool, Rotom Frost, Eiscue, Diggersby, Dachsbun, and Herdier on a full team of six Pokémon as a reference to all current 6 of the entries in the Wallace and Grommit series. And after defeating him, he should tease some sort of potential new Cheese Pokémon.😅
