    Anyways, the LAAT / Republic Gunship is one of the very few craft that Star Wars got exactly right. I mean, the wings are too big for something that doesn't really /need/ wings, and those missile launchers could have been styled a little better, but aside from that, it just looks right. And it performs right.
    So, hey, something something blind squirrel something nut something.

    The LAAT/I is probably one of the most armed fucking things in Star Wars short of a proper capitol ship. It is kinda absurd...and considering that the (I)nfantry variant is the primary variant that says a lot. Because it has the (C)arrier variant, the (S)tealth variant, a variant for low-orbital drops, a variant for boarding actions, a variant for use as a command element, and a specialized variant used by the Republic's police forces. To note, anytime Star Wars uses the word “laser” they don’t mean an actual laser with the exception of the Death Star superlaser. It’s a generalised term in the universe that gets used for blaster weapons, typically this is in reference to spacecraft and vehicular weapons. For example, your typical “laser” cannon or “turbolaser” is actually just a plasma cannon. With the composition of the plasma dictating its colour such as ionised plasma being blue and somehow better at fighting droids.

    Another helicopter that is worth a look at when considering the LAAT is the only other contender for the 'Assault Helicopter' label, the Sikorsky S-67 Blackhawk (not to be confused with the Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk, I guess they really liked the name). • @beejay7665
      @beejay7665 2 роки тому +6

      Not the ‘only other’. The S-67 is considered an attack helicopter, similar to the Huey Cobra or AH-64 Apache, rather than Assault. The Army’s MH-60L and MH-60L DAP aircraft are considered Assault assets. MH-6 little birds and AH-6 killer eggs were/are also assault platforms in their own right, or could be part of a larger assault package. MH-47s bring the heavy assets. I flew air assaults on the USAF MH-53M; I can confirm that Fortunate Son was on our playlist, along with Hendrix’s (Dylan’s) All Along The Watchtower. Also Disturbed’s Down With The Sickness and, for some reason, Georgia Satellites made the list

      I'm not sure I'd place either the Little Bird or the MH-60L DAP in the same category as the Hind, they're both utilities with guns strapped on (arguably scout =utility with the MH-6 admittedly). The truth of the matter is, the Hind's a uniquely Soviet design, made with Soviet doctrine in mind. There was never really a need for an equivalent machine in the west, not because of capability, but because NATO doctrine didn't have a requirement for such a helo.

    • @beejay7665
      @beejay7665 2 роки тому +6

      @@malusignatius Agreed; the Hind’s combo of extensive armament and troop insertion capability were unique, and the Star Wars gunship definitely draws from its role and aesthetic. The U.S., in its air assault role, builds an assault package utilizing different airframes with different capabilities tailored to the objective. We could put a large force on the ground very quickly, either landing or roping in, but our weapons were defensive only and we would usually have air cover. We were also too big for urban environments, where the MH-6 & AH-6 excelled.

      A lot of it also doesn't have a name, perse; Russians are pragmatic overall, and don't give fancy names to their hardware... Most of it ends up with insulting names from the troops because of odd shapes, or bad design flaws. EG: a certain tank who's autoloader was notorious for mangling the gunner's arm got the nickname of 'arm eater.'
      There was also a bomber who's onboard AC used pure ethanol, the crews would try to use the AC as little as possible and then skim the ethanol off to sell it as booze since they were not paid well by the Soviet union. It also was eventually scrapped, because while it wasn't the most dangerous position (I believe that was the waist gunner IIRC), it was the position where if anything went wrong you'd be giving everyone else PTSD after they hosed you out of the ball turret and buried you in a jam jar

    My understanding of the Hind was for Russian Spec Ops kill missions as well as ground support. Clear its own LZ in a hot area fast deploy of crazy, highly trained and heavily armed Russian troops. Who then have there own dedicated fire support. Seems to be what the idea was it was just to much multi role of one airframe. Probably to work in 2s with 8 to 12 troops in the hold.

    • @npswm1314
      @npswm1314 2 роки тому +16

      Due to the large number of variants on the base LAAT design, the troop bay tends to change. Sometimes it can hold a dozen clones, sometimes it can hold 40. Sometimes it has seats, sometimes just handles. Sometimes it has four speeders, sometimes two AT-RTs, sometimes it has an entire fucking command post inside. It depends. The Carrier variant is interesting because it has a system where it can carry pre-fab things in specialized designed crates so it can just drop and leave. Think the Chinook had a poly relationship with a Hind and an AC-130 and a Flying Fortress.

      The stubs on the Apache do much the same thing but to a far lesser extent because the Apache was designed as a pop-up dedicated attack aircraft that would spend WAY more time at very low altitude and VERY low speed than the Hind.
      In truth, the Hind handles like a bus, so while the Apache (and Cobra, Tiger, Rooivalk, Mangusta, and even the KA50 and Mi-28) can duck behind something to break line of sight, the Hind survives by screaming in at absurdly high speed for a helicopter, blowing away whatever is in front of it, and hauling ass out the other side before anyone can get a lock on it.

    One thing that I'd like to add about Attack Helicopters: The reason for the gunner being sat up front, and the pilot in back is simple: Visibility. Both crew members need to be able to see what's around them with minimal blockage. To achieve this, the pilot is placed higher, and to the rear behind the gunner, who in turn gets the best field of view since his/her job in that seat is to scan for and engage threats. After all... in that envelope, the time from threat appears to the sudden and rapid disassembly of critical parts of your helicopter are measured in seconds... any delay in that envelope means death.

That is why this aircraft became an _"assault helicopter."_
    Late in the Soviet era -- or in post-Soviet era Russia -- dedicated attack helicopters were developed.

    I just had an incredibly stupid idea pop into my head that might make little enough sense to be true. I think that the 'composite lasers' use multiple, smaller lasers and use some kind of magnetic field (or whatever space magic is necessary) to bend all of the smaller lasers together into one, then direct it in a straight line. As for why they use several small lasers? Cooling. A larger laser would take a substantial coolant system that, should it fail, may cause your ball turret or definitely-not-a-small-moon to turn into a boiling irradiated soup in a way similar to a nuclear meltdown. However, if there are several smaller lasers each with their own coolant systems they can be more easily managed and maintained. Additionally, if one of the smaller lasers fails you can still fire the composite laser, only at a weaker power than before, until all of the lasers are functional again.

    • @SacredCowShipyards
      @SacredCowShipyards  2 роки тому +3

      Ok, so, yes, that could be a thing.
      But, first, the cooling requirements for all of the subsidiary lasers will total to the same requirements as if you had just had a single laser that had the same output sum of all the mini lasers.
      BUT WAIT.
      Now you're factoring in the /additional/ heat of whatever majikery that it takes to composite all of these various, off-angle laser beams into one, coherent - because it's a laser after all - beam thing.
      And... yeah. I'm just going to go ahead and guess that last thing probably generates more heat than all the lasers combined.

      @@SacredCowShipyards But there is one thing remaining, if I remember correctly. Lightsabers use a similar technology to control the length of their saber blades, which probably means the composite lasers could use the same devices. As for why you would bother making it a composite laser? Still no solid ground, maybe it would be less likely to kill the gunner if only one laser somehow misfired. But as for why the side guns were abandoned it was probably too taxing to train that many specialized gunners in the pilot program.
