  • This one is for all of the new-bees!! Last weekend I taught a beginner beekeeping class in Napoleon Michigan at Napoleon Bee Supply! I had so much fun that I decided I should share this class with all of you! In this class we take it all they way back to the real basics. Covering what kind of bees to get, the nuc vs package debate, what kind of equipment you need, varroa mites, future planning for overwintering, and gosh soooo much more! We even had a nice discussion at the end with those in the audience. So I hope this video helps!!

@gary1965able Actually, the newer beekeepers are generally a great resource for the new Beekeepers because they are usually learning the most recent information and are eager to share it with non beekeeepers who are just starting. Most seasoned Beekeepers don't keep up to date with modern research. They have their ways, and thats what they share, which is fine, but I've heard way too many older beeks share completely outdated information and its frustrating. Info about mites checks and treatments. The so-called need for moisture quilts, and the need to get out moisture in winter. Now, I am always taken all the info shared to me and only used what I want to try at the time and see what works.

What thickness were those gloves? I get by with the leather/ sheep skin ones most of the time but my wife struggles doing most things in the hive with them and I wouldn’t mind something to give me a little more dexterity when I’m doing tedious tasks. Honestly I’d work without if I wasn’t allergic, but even the smallest stings cause days of massive swelling so I play it safe.

When is the best time of the year to do a brood break?

July is my favorite time to do one. That way you get a post summer solstice queen to really ramp the hive up for winter and I have found it really helps cut back on fall swarming when golden rod hits

Good course. Just some miner things. Bees are not aggressive. They are defensive. The hive the guy was asking about when he said hive with spigots is a flow Hive. There is some controversy which personally I think is wrong. Flow Hives are good for people that don't want to grow huge and just want a little hobby. They are excellent for kids to be able to see how honey is produced. I have no idea why some people are so against them. As in cost? The Apimaye hives are not cheap either. And also you alleviate the cost of spinners and all the other stuff that goes with getting honey. It's not complicated at all. Fredrick Dunn Master beekeeper and youtuber has nothing but praise for Flow Hive and he has been doing research for many years. It's not a good hive for commercial or side liners. For a beginner class ok with the exemption of the few things I said which isn't just my own personal view, there are thousands that think the same way. That's why Flow Hive is still doing lots of business and still climbing. BTW I personally wouldn't own one because it doesn't fit with what I do. Keep up the good work.🙂
