I've been doing something similar. I don't like black because it's too hard to get color on top of it. So I start by priming my minis with Krylon rattlecan khaki. I then wash it with AP Strong Tone and dry brush white/khaki. I then paint with speedpaints. I haven't tried Xpress because I haven't seen them available in the US yet.

Black lotus has become my favorite of the Xpress paints I've bought. Thinned slightly it works as a black wash and left as is it creates a wonderful subtle blue / black color which shows the highlights much better than Citadel black contrast. It's a very versatile paint.
I can’t wait to see how you painted the large flat panels on the sentinel which are prone to staining. Excellent point about using a WARM color for the pre shade. I almost spewed when I watched the beginning 😂
My wife was suffering at the start of the video, hehehehehe, poor miniature!! Great video as always!! Any update on the expanded XPress range?? Now that there are "other companies" that are expanding their ranges, it could be great for Vallejo to update with the missing hues and not be left behind ;) Thanks for your great work!
Use Khaki Drill for the uniform, Armor Green for the Armour and Mahogany for the leather. The rest is the same and the result should be a close Boxart scheme
After a couple of years of seeing you use the Raphael brushes I finally went and got a few.....I wish I had done that sooner because they've put everything i've used previously to shame and then some. I use a size 1 mostly as that's what works for me but man using contrast and washes did not have the effect I was expecting, these things take it like a champ. Definitely become my go to brushes! Still not going near metallics with them, that definitely worries me lol
Excellent. I think that a common mistake for beginners in general is "I am new, I will use cheap stuff". Using the highest quality you can afford is so worth it! I learned this in canvas painting. Using cheap paint is super difficult and professional paint is so nice.
@marcbowling6451 yeah getting atleast one really good brush that's not going to break the bank is definitely the way to go. I pretty much only use my Raphael brushes now besides a over used Scale 75 brush for metallics and cheapo ones for texture paint and when I bother to use oils or enamels. I got back into the hobby with a handful of the citadel paints from around 2015 and some vallejo paints before being bought one of the big sets of Army Painter paints and some of them are still great but a lot of them were a chore to use and I think I learnt a lot more from them then the previous lot. Now I swear by Vallejo and AK 3rd gen paints and use a mix of washes and contrast paints when needed from Army Painter and Citadel. Is a lot of paint to keep track of but it's definitely helped going the way I have with it
I adapted your 'eavy Contrast technique on my Khagra's Reavers with a drybrush of Vallejo Ivory. I really love this range! Superb coverage, great price, really looking forward to them expanding the range!
This answered a lot of my questions about the range. I paint historicals and was wondering how this would work for WW2 miniatures (lots of khakis, camo greens, etc).
Yes, and with mixing a bit you can manage to produce mostly all the hues you will need. With that being said, we are expanding the range to 60 paints and I specifically asked for a set of WW2 inspired colours
I highly recommend you get some of the hues right now, Lizard Green, Plague Green, Wasteland Brown ara amazing, the new colours might take a while to come out
Good tip on the flesh, most don't go into that, painted some minis with this technique and the come out too dark since the flesh colored paints are thinner
A miniature painting god. Thanks a lot for the detailed explanations, it really helps us nee to the hobbie to understand better these techniques and the reason for some of the colour choices. Please do more of these videos without airbrush!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Perfect, keep up the excellent work! I ordered today the complete set of Xpress paints, looking forward to painting with them. Thanks for your contribution.
Damn nice job on this. Been having issue with contrast/speed paints not showing up as “bright” as I’d like, but it was due to lack of building from black to white with priming or dry brush. Been seeing on multiple vids building from a black prime->gray/brown->white works so well, instead of just black and white only. I'm having an absolute nightmare with getting my Iwata HC working properly at the moment. I sit down to paint and end up spending an hour fiddling with/cleaning the brush, and then giving up. It's the biggest obstacle to me actually painting anything. This dry brushing technique might be the very thing to get me back on the horse. Amazing results.
Thanks! I'm with you on that, to me airbrushes are more a pain than anything else. They are amazing indeed when they work but a nightmare when they don't.

Hey just wondering what dark Gray for the fatigues be ideal. Because id like to add a grimdark feel to my guardsmen. The Green flack armor looks fantastic.
Would love to see more xpress painting that experiment with the undercoats! Think I'm gonna paint up my Wargame Atlantic Landschenkt Ogres like the guard here!
Maybe a stupid question, but everytime I use gloomy violet of the new express colours, it's not really working on any flatter surface. I wanted to paint the cloak of a custodes with it, but it just won't stay where I want it. Like it pools in patches but doesn't cover tje the surface at all. And where it pools it just dries extremely glossy.
Oh yeah, we've seen that Contrast in general and Xpress in particular don't go well over AK paints for some reason, they behave weirdly and can cause the paint to even split and dry glossy. That is more noticeable on larger, flatter surfaces. Try to do a layer of Matte varnish over them and see if it keeps happening
Might happen with another paints but the ones we've tested so far, only AK. Give Citadel a try and see it is goes better, I'm honestly interested in the outcome of this
Hello Juan! Thank you for the tutorial. Now express paints have expanded - would you change any of these mixes? Would you just use armour green for example?
Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'll keep the armour colour from this tutorial and just use the new fatigue colour instead of the diluted wasteland brown. Keep up the great work Juan, you are smashing it.
I got the full set, but when I have the choice i very much prefer my Speedpaints (vallejo fist colour choices are rly strange). The vallejo range is a nice supplement though because of some quite unique colours.
"because I am a psychopath" - Ha! You're the man! Love your videos so much! Because you've been such an amazing creator to watch use the Citadel contrast paints I would love to see a video from you talking about which Vallejo contrast paints you would encourage those of us with only the Citadel line to run out and pick up first, and maybe talk about whether you plan to transition your use of contract mostly over to Vallejo going forward? Thanks!
Late to the party but I've just picked up the Vallejo Xpress set thanks to this video. The finish and the colours look great and I cant wait for the range to expand. I noticed from the comments you would do a more traditional black, grey, white drybrush for blue. How would you tackle other colours like red, yellow etc? Thanks for the fantastic video!
Thanks mate, I actually had to learn editing by myself. I always try to make my videos a bit better each time, I'm very proud of this one even if the shots are not 100% well aligned
Thanks for the nice video, tried it on an infinity model using zandri dust as an undercoat for green and it turned great. What would you advice for...hem... blue?
Now that you have created a line of xpress paints for military colors which of these mixing recipes would you switch out for a regular xpress paint now?
None because I actually like the colours and any of the new ones would change them. But if I had to paint Cadians now, I would use a diluted Bag of Bones for the fatigues, and probably Commando Green or Armout green for the armour parts. What I'm going to start doing though, is use the new browns for the leather, Mahogany and Willow Bark.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures interesting why bag of bones instead of khaki drill? I thought that one was meant to be a solution for cadian undergarments. Not complaining since bag of bones is one of my favorite xpress paints I’m more just curious. Also what do you think about using greasy black on the boots since it’s a warmer shade? Do you think that would make better boots?
Lovely video, Juan. Thank you for sharing this good quality content. Hope we'll meet again in person. Let everyone know you're not only a really good painter but a nice person to talk to. Cheers!
Would this work for something like Vallejo XPress Cardinal Purple, or would you choose a different colour than tan to put it over? Thanks so much for this video, I've been trying to work out similar ways to do "enhanced slapchop" and this really put it all together for me!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ¿Cómo escoges el mejor under color?
I ended up buying 12 Xpress paints after watching your videos :) I look forward to more of your amazing Xpress work. Great tip about model air silver I'm guessing it's thinner than my vallejo model silver which I find is hard to do highlights because its thick and drys fast.
ooo I wonder if the new vallejo colours eliminated the need for thinning down wasteland brown and using the new bone colour not seen what it looks like yet
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Would be great. there are 20 years worth of old guards in circulation and they are still considered superior to new ones due to old habits and non mono pose customizable bodies. 07 thank you for replying.
Amazing video! I've been wanting to try this. I don't know if you answer your comment section, but would this work for red, say for the Farsight Enclaves?
Because I personally prefer this combination myself. I would have used Metal Color Dark Aluminium but mine got bad and I haven't been able to replace it yet

@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures huh damn, trying out with citadel paints next time. Weird, that this happens only with AK.
Well, not really because now my scheme is that one. But Armour Green was designed to copy the Cadian armour
You can blame Giraldez for that. We are already working on more
you're the best at teaching us how to paint
I try!
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures everything seems simple when you explain it so well, and the production value is amazing. Really good job, wish you the best.
Thanks mate, that really means a lot
Nice use of the Rosemary & Co brushes Juan. 👍 Might to give the teeny tiny details a go.
Thanks 😘
Hope you and the family are keeping well.
We are thanks for asking mate
"because I am a psychopath" - Ha! You're the man! Love your videos so much! Because you've been such an amazing creator to watch use the Citadel contrast paints I would love to see a video from you talking about which Vallejo contrast paints you would encourage those of us with only the Citadel line to run out and pick up first, and maybe talk about whether you plan to transition your use of contract mostly over to Vallejo going forward? Thanks!
I won't transition, I will use Contrast exclusively for the Eavy Contrast series, and I will mix for the rest
It depends! Depends on what finish you want to achieve, what level of saturation and value, etc
For some reason the wasteland brown + xpress medium 1:3 is not giving me that tan color... Maybe I failed at making more under it...
Awesome video, as always. The one I was looking for! There’s a new nuln oil? Changed formula?
Yeah all shades changed formula to use a variation of the Contrast chemistry
For an editor, you’re a brilliant painter.
😂😂😂
Thanks 😘
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Seriously, though. One of the most talented I’ve ever seen. Come here for tips regularly.
Thanks mate, I actually had to learn editing by myself. I always try to make my videos a bit better each time, I'm very proud of this one even if the shots are not 100% well aligned
Slap chop and inexpensive AP speed paints allowed me to finish my Orks and Blueberries as if I had some kind of talent.
It's a great technique
Thanks for the nice video, tried it on an infinity model using zandri dust as an undercoat for green and it turned great. What would you advice for...hem... blue?
Normal black and white. There's little you can do with blue
Thanks!
Next level editing :'D
Thanks
Lovely video, Juan. Thank you for sharing this good quality content.
Hope we'll meet again in person. Let everyone know you're not only a really good painter but a nice person to talk to.
Cheers!
Gracias guapo 😘
Would this work for something like Vallejo XPress Cardinal Purple, or would you choose a different colour than tan to put it over? Thanks so much for this video, I've been trying to work out similar ways to do "enhanced slapchop" and this really put it all together for me!
Well, it can, it will help make it warmer for sure. But you need to looks for the best under colour for your scheme
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures ¿Cómo escoges el mejor under color?
Gracias!
Un placer!
Intro was hilarious.
Thanks mate 😘
the best technique with the best painter. can'T go wrong. Except of our heads to explode
Thanks mate 😘
I ended up buying 12 Xpress paints after watching your videos :) I look forward to more of your amazing Xpress work. Great tip about model air silver I'm guessing it's thinner than my vallejo model silver which I find is hard to do highlights because its thick and drys fast.
Thanks 😘
Your intros are great!
I try!
Great Video! Can you tell me what you used to make the base?
Vallejo dark earth paste, Drybrush with screaming skull, wash of seraphim sepia and Agrax in spots
Tufts
Pigments on top, Natural Umber from Vallejo
ooo I wonder if the new vallejo colours eliminated the need for thinning down wasteland brown and using the new bone colour not seen what it looks like yet
It's a different hue but yeah you can use that and not thin it
Please do old style imperial guard 8th cadian scheme too with older guard models.
I doubt I will but you never know
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Would be great. there are 20 years worth of old guards in circulation and they are still considered superior to new ones due to old habits and non mono pose customizable bodies. 07 thank you for replying.
Amazing video! I've been wanting to try this. I don't know if you answer your comment section, but would this work for red, say for the Farsight Enclaves?
Yes to both questions, but you will have to be careful with your red, contrast reds are usually very strong
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thank you!
Happy to help
If i could only like this video twice :D
That was great!
Thanks!
You can always subscribe
Hello Juan, very nice (as usual) There is a black wash and a metallic chainmail in the vallejo game colour range, why don't you use those?
Because I personally prefer this combination myself.
I would have used Metal Color Dark Aluminium but mine got bad and I haven't been able to replace it yet
