MayBot: How Stage Fright Ruined Theresa May

  • It’s the morning after the election. The Conservatives stay in power, but they’ve lost their majority. They massively underperformed - and their leader, Theresa May, is taking the flak.
She’d hoped to draw comparisons to another strong leader.
But instead, echoed a different malevolent force: the cyborg.
And thus, the MayBot was born.
Everyone agreed: Theresa May didn’t connect with the voters.
But what was it about Theresa that put people off?
This question could fill many books. But I have one small theory.
My theory is this: Theresa May didn’t seem ‘strong and stable’ because she was suffering symptoms of stage fright.
    Let me explain.
Social situations can be scary. When Joe Kowan played at his first open mic night,
Speaking in public is no different. Just the act of getting up there creates adrenaline.
And adrenaline can create a ton of uncomfortable symptoms.
And if you’re anything like me, you might recognise some of that. It’s good old-fashioned stage fright.
People wanted Theresa to be herself. They wanted her to be ‘human’. Technically, she is both ‘herself’ and a ‘human’. But when she speaks in public, she often doesn’t seem that way.
Look at the way she moves when she speaks. The movements are jerky and tight, especially in her head and neck. Look at her after the election:
She’s full of tension - and people reacted to the tension they saw. Her laugh in the house of commons quickly went viral.
These jerky movements appear insincere - like you’re overcompensating for something. Do you remember this line from Ed Miliband?
Voters saw the tense, jerky way he delivered that line, and said ‘no’. And when May said ‘strong and stable’.
It seemed like she wasn’t being herself.
This physical tension is a symptom of stage fright - of the adrenaline of being under social pressure. These are fight or flight answers to simple questions.
And they stop you from being yourself. Because how the hell can you be yourself when your muscles are contracted, you’re losing your words, your spidey-senses are tingling and you’re trying to be strong and stable strong and stable strong and stable?
This happens to a lot of my clients. The tension gets the better of them, and they get jerky with their movements. They want this, and this, and this. They’ve got three things to focus on. They’ve got to do things now.
And they start rubbing their hands, or shifting from side to side.
But imagine instead, that they wanted this and this and this. They’ve got three things to focus on. They’ve got to do things now.
Imagine if they were able to be fluid, relaxed, and engaged. Free to move.
Draw a rainbow with your finger. Back and forth, back and forth. Don’t jerk from motion to motion. Keep it fluid. Try with the other hand. Notice that it calms the breathing. Takes you out of fight or flight. And maybe, just maybe, helps you be...
    More yourself.
    Thanks for watching.

That couple with the lies she has to tell the public, is a hard act to maintain.

100% agree its like putting a nerd in front of all the "cool kids". I'm fed up of these silver spoon, Harry Potter characters running the country into the ground and leaving us penny-less. I cant wait till the housing bubble bursts and we can buy all the houses cheap off each others parents instead of renting them from each others parents... Its so backwards its like the generations always use the previous gens as a piggy banks.... 60s-70's kids are the reason we are here today and its down to greed and narcissism. Thanks America

I think some of her policies are what draw people to negative conclusions about her (dementia tax, hard Brexit, fox-hunting) ... but at the same time, she is not extreme and I think people can give her a bit more credit for that! Even Great Britain's liberals should acknowledge that their leadership is a far cry from the dystopian reality show of the USA. Everyone can be thankful that there is only one of those.

I mean, they voted for conservatives of the same brand before and after. Labour voters don’t like your policies
