Those knees! Ouch! As someone who's gone a bit too quick into squatting right out of the gate when I started lifting, I know how that feels. I didn't really injure myself, but I did exclusively squats and did like 4 sets, and kept going with bad form. Walked around with pain in the knees for a week. Now, I'd rather only do a plate at squats for 2 sets of 10, or even finish the second set early than hurt my knees. I've ended up suplimenting with leg press. I spent 2 years getting in shape only by rowing before lifting, so I can move the weight on something like a leg press. My quads have the power, but the accessory muscle stability and form just isn't there to do squats. Nothing wrong with bumping the weight down for the compounds and using a more isolated movement after.
