Here on Svalbard, an island close to the North Pole, we are deep in our polar night having spent more than one month in complete darkness. But there is always light to be found in the dark. On the 13th of December we celebrate Lucia in Sweden, a festival of light during the darkest time of the year. Today we spend some time in the darkness of the polar night, to the soundtrack of the incredible Jonna Jinton. Christoffer also bakes saffran biscotti and Grim.... well Grim is just cute as always. Here I have a 2 year old elf of a daughter who always interrupts her playing when I watch a video. She climbs on my lap and patiently waits for Grim to appear on screen to say hi to him. She always says "Bonjour Grim !" "Il est beau Grim ! " ("Hello Grim" Grim is beautiful" in French) and is utterly fascinated. Today I was looking at older videos and she discovered Fenris ! Oh the joy! 😊

I cannot get over how adorable Christoffer is when he does his cooking videos, he is hte perfect person to present, he is so calm and explains everything so well. And I love using his recipe guides. The biscotti looks amazing, I am planning on binge watching Snøfall and Husky at the weekend and these will be perfect to have with my coffee.

Oh I wish I knew this yesterday when they had people doing this Lucia procession at work (I work for a Norwegian company). I wasn’t aware of this tradition so it was interesting when all the lights in the office was turned off and a procession of white dressed and (fake) candle crowned people suddenly walked through singing.
It’s actually pretty nice tradition that has this magical feeling to it but it truly works for more Nordic countries that actually has more darkness because it makes this especially special (but as a part of Nordic company it’s nice to learn of traditions like this as stuff like this rarely gets mentioned here quite far from North Pole) and also my grandma would’ve had a birthday on this date so this just made me feel like this day is even more special

Christopher's voice is so relaxing. And with the songs, it is almost like ASMR. He should start an ASMR channel. Listening to him whispering would put me to sleep in 5 seconds lol. Today I baked our festive spiced fruit tea loaf we love to have at Christmas. I'm from Yorkshire in England & my favourite tea brand comes from Yorkshire too, so my fruit was soaked in hot Yorkshire tea over night & I put extra cinnamon in our cake too as we adore cinnamon in my family. Its now stored nicely in foil to mature slightly & ready for Christmas week, where we'll eat it either with salted butter, cheese or on its own.

I love Jonna Jinton’s chanel too. One of my grandparents was Danish. I’ve been digging into Scandinavian culture as a way to make sense of some childhood trauma but also to feel rooted in simple things like the inter generational love for coffee and cakes. That was beautiful, Cecilia! You opened a memory many decades old...when I was in grade school. We had to choose a Christmas tradition in faraway lands...and I selected Lucia Day. I had to learn all about it and created a large cardboard cutout and painted it of Lucia. I got to hold her up in a Christmas performance at school and share what it meant. I haven't thought about that in many years...so thank you for the sweet memory! (secret be told...I felt mine was always the best in that school Christmas performance...as it was the best tradition...LOL). I love your videos and the beauty they bring. What a wonderful memory! Your memory opened a memory of mine too :) I remember performing in a school Christmas concert in grade 1 over 30 yrs ago! I made a swan basket cut out of a white plastic milk bottle. I tied a red ribbon around it and popped some silver tinsel in it, and I also thought it was the most beautiful thing in the whole performance....and even more prettier than the fluffy white tulle dress I was wearing that made me feel like a princess! Haha oh innocent childhood memories :) Lovely holiday wishes to you too.

Wow, this was haunting and beautiful. Cecilia and Chris! ( : I loved watching this so much. I love learning about my swedish heritage. I am 1/4 swedish (my mom's grandmother was full swedish, half Scottish/Irish and 1/4 Finnish, English, and Danish! ( : that song, Lucia was sooo lovely and the story about what you do on Lucia Day stirred my heart! I plan on doing this with my grandkids from now on and my girls! I recognized Jonna's voice immediately! Fun fact, when I was in like 5th grade, my school here in California did a Lucia celebration. I have no clue why, but I'm so glad we did! I'll never forget it. One of my best friends was the one to lead the procession. It was so beautiful and since then I've always been fascinated by the tradition.

Many years ago, in the sixth grade when I was 12 our class wrote reports about Christmas’ around the World. My country was Sweden. I made a Paper Crown of paper candles. Little bits of red paper mimicked the Candles flames. A beautiful memory. Ten years after that time, I was privileged to travel to Sweden. Idk how it's possible I have such a small percentage of my DNA being Nordic but it's the part of me I embrace the most regarding the beautiful nature, finding happiness in the moody most darkest and coldest nights, dreaming of the northern lights. Appreciating the traditions and culture. I feel like I should be out there and not where I am lol
