    Based on your demeanor I can tell that you are a wonderful and kind teacher . Collagen capsules or gelatin are also very helpful for building strong nails .

    I was blessed with very strong nails (and thick hair) and thank genetics daily for this. It is great knowing that they're not going to break on me, especially if a recital was coming up. Of course they can, and do, break if they are mistreated but it takes a bit more work than might otherwise be the case should they have been weaker to begin with. Nails are so important we sometimes forget just how critically important to us they really are.

    Many thanks for comprehensive and sensible advice. I have damaged one nail by applying a fake nail twice (in order to do two successive performances) and also roughing the surface to ensure glue sticks. Big mistake! I am now trying to build that nail's strength again ... your video is most helpful! Thank you

    I tried acrylic nails. Such a pain. Then I started taking pre natal vitamins every day. Problem solved. My nails are so strong I never break or tear them. Before that they were thinner than paper. Try it. Takes about a month.

    Best thing I have found for very weak nails that ear like the ones I have is E45 cream {the thick stuff} I now have much stronger nails, a little bit rubbed on them 2 times a day or if you have done something to dry out nails use some. If you try this please comment on how it works for you I would like to know.

    Like Ms Goni says: if you start with full-blown gels you are stuck with them. If you wish to jump off the train it might take 18 months to get back in swing. It destroys the nail, even future growth - ask me how I know...

    Nutritionally, add collagen powder (a good tasteless powder). not only does this strengthen nails but improves skin immensely.

    it is a debate with classical guitarists weather to use nails or not , it comes down to what tone you are looking for ..for me I hated the way my playing was without having nails ...playing with skin was odd to me .it is a hassle to take care of them , but it's worth it ...everything comes together when playing classical guitar....anyways you strike the string with both nail and flesh , not just the nail alone .

    Rather than ruin your broken nail with patches and glues, why not play without nails until it grows back? I feel we guitarists tend to depend too much on our nails. Generations of guitarists had played without them before Segovia popularized the nail+flesh combo, and the world kept on spinning around.

    • @davidjaggs
      @davidjaggs  2 роки тому +1

      We are obsessed I know! But if I lose a nail I literally can't play properly until it grows back.

      @@davidjaggs Yes, the adaptations in terms of technique can be daunting. Wasn't it said of Liszt that he broke a finger prior to a recital and changed all the fingerings on the fly? :0)

    What kills nails and guitar playing, is the fad about the "powerful tone and projection." Firstly, players were forced to play with nails a lot in order to get vibrations that carry on longer and farther, and then, the guitar structure was changed so that it becomes more responsive, percussive and louder. Another damage which kills the sophisticated guitar tone. As a result, today's guitars sound almost like banjos!
    That dangerous trend established itself in the second part of the 20th century. Everyone followed it blindly because the amplification systems were horrible and unsophisticated. With today's hi-quality and highly sophisticated stage equipment, pickups, microphones and amps, that damage to the guitar music can be undone. But the current "elite" of guitar players, teachers, and their blind followers, cannot get rid of bad habits. Other problem that followed it is that guitar players taught concert organisers wrong things: "Organisers need nothing to worry because their new guitars are powerful", and as a result, no organiser cares about proper amplification. But which they hire and care a lot about if the rock band is coming along, or a string quintet. Instead of a moderately priced quality guitar of classic construction, and a kit of sophisticated mics, pickups, tuners and amp in their luggage, guitarists splurge all money on uber-expensive doubletop or lattice guitars that have horrible sound. I mean, a total disaster for the world of classical guitar. Does anyone think there at all?

    Nails are a pretty flimsy thing to base a career on and their maintenance is a hassle, as this video demonstrates. Tarrega, Pujol, Legnani, Metz, Coste, and Sor all played with flesh. They played complex, rewarding music and, by all reports, played it beautifully. Giuliani was alleged to be the greatest virtuoso of his age. I can't find any description of his technique, but if his approach was like that of his contemporaries, I suspect he played without nails.The school of fingernail playing seems to have taken over around the time when Segovia came to prominence. Now all the elite guitarists follow his lead and all the amateur players imitate their idols. This is a shame, for it is possible to play without nails, pills, elixirs, and creams and still get lots of volume and a beautiful tone (and get it more easily). Emilio Pujol describes how this is done in his Rational School of Guitar, which is available in English now.

      Hello Rob Brown. I am just discovering the world of classical guitar and what you are writing really interests me. It is a question I keep asking myself (I have no teacher): what should we play with, nails or flesh? Personally, I prefer the sound and feel of flesh on the strings, because nail sound is more metallic, and it is difficult to make it sound "sweet" (or is it difficult just for beginners?). But it seems I can't play with thumb flesh, only with thumb nail, because the thumb is always at such an angle that it is the nail that hits the string first, and not the flesh. In any case, I suppose it is all just a question of practice and patience, right?

      Thank you for your comment,its true that guitarist needs to find a proper own techique that allows them to play with a beautiful tone,but nails has benefits and negative things but in practicall terms its imposible and i experimented it ,to play certain kind of music without fingernails ,wich it provides you a security in strokes like in arpeggios Etudes like no 1 by H.Villalobos or trémolo music or playing a variety of dinámics,its just to experiment what it works for you.

      If don't use any nail you have to have good callouses on your fingers. But long playing makes them automatically. Tommy Emmanuel don't use nails in his playing but its steel guitar, nylon string is different to work with tone.
