Spline Jig for Narrow Stock

  • Miter joints are beautiful, but sometimes they can benefit from a little reinforcement to keep them together.
Even with mechanical options such as biscuits, dowels, and possibly even screws or nails, a potentially eye-catching option might be to cut slots across the joint and insert a spline.
For a recent project, I needed a jig to cut splines in narrow stock, so rather than building a big sled like I’ve seen elsewhere, I grabbed some scraps and put something together I could potentially be using for years to come in a matter of minutes.

    Greetings from Australia
Just discovered your channel and subscribed. I love the variety of topics and projects you create and will go back and watch more videos.
Your workshop is a great backdrop for your videos and the spline jig is so simple.

Thanks for the great idea Matt. Short and sweet and very informative.
Now the question is...what is the project they went in? Looks like a small stand for something. 🤔

Nice jig, but for me I use metal screws on my jigs only for glue up clamping and then remove them . Super glue has proven to be very good for end grain holding power. I don't need another blade and cartridge change on my Sawstop.

I thought about that as an issue also. I may revisit removing them, especially if I used thicker stock where I could cut a wider spline. Thanks for watching.

Nice! I have a similar, wider one for putting splines in miter corner boxes. I think I'll make your version for frames and such.

I've been thinking of some other projects which will be much wider, so more than likely I'll be making another version to accommodate those.
      Thanks for watching!

Nice jig. What type of countersink did you use? I’m looking to upgrade mine and the one you used may be the upgrade I’ve been looking for.

It's an Amana No Mar adjustable countersink. I've had it for a few years and absolutely love it, although I don't think "No Mar" is 100% true as I've left a mark or two on material, but it easily comes off.
      Thanks for watching!
