  • Few notes:
    1. Bleeding instructions at 30m00s courtesy of FCP Euro (copied from their product page)
    2. Be sure to put coolant in mixed 50-50 with distilled water. I did not show that step. Do this BEFORE you attempt to bleed the system.
    3. You will need this video too during the process.

    Best auto DIYs I've seen yet. Perfectly articulate descriptions of all the tool sizes, tricks and techniques along the way through the job. You really cover well all the little unexpected things that happen along the way. Also, great job actually showing video of all maneuvers, no matter how insignificant they may seem. Those are the ones that I get stuck on sometimes. Thanks man. Awesome!!

    C.K I wanted to give a special thank you for the effort on this video, I was able to complete the process today by going through your videos and taking my time throughout the process. I bought the bmw from a bmw dealer here in Houston last week and the day after it started to overheat. I took it back but they didn’t want to fix it as it was an as is warranty. I was not willing to pay 1200 for the wp replacement so I did it myself thanks to you. All the best brother ✊🏽

      @@yogi799 did you ever get a quote from BMW on what it would cost to have them do it?

    • @yogi799
      @yogi799  5 років тому

      @@hairyferry no, because i avoid dealer at all cost. part of it is the cost itself, and the other half is utter distrust of any mechanic who makes a living by messing with my car. once they disassemble, it's as easy as: "oh, btw, while we were in there we noticed X and Y should also be replaced, and it would cost Z to do it, but you will save a lot while we're already in there" LOL. Not to mention the parts alone cost around $400 and the dealer would likely not accept your parts. So they would sell you theirs, here in Canada they'd be AT LEAST twice as much as the aftermarket stuff (same product though!). So as you and someone else below said correctly... Probably a $1-2k savings combined.

    • @yogi799
      @yogi799  5 років тому

    One trick I learned...those coolant connectors you struggled with on the thermostat (13:21 on the video) come off very easily with heat. Either a heat gun on the lowest setting or a hair dryer on high should be enough. The plastic hose connector heats and expands before the flange you’re trying to take it off of and it slides right off...prying not necessary

    There's a test that I could do where the ignition is on the engine is off I hold down the gas for 12 seconds and if I hear a specific rattling sound it's clear indications that the water pump is bad or if it's flushing itself with the cap off for 10 or 12 minutes it's an indication that the water pump is still good.

Tomorrow will bleed system and see if all the codes go away - but mine same symptom as yours...fan cycling a lot especially when the car was cold.

      I think taking of the bumper would be very time consuming and a bit of a nightmare. think about all the connectors on the inside of the bumper, wheel well rubber pieces holding it all together, etc. probably 30 screws at least. plus very bulky and hard to manage. i'd pass. Plus then you'd still have the condenser in your way possibly etc.

    My dad sold his bmw because of that idiot water pump. The pump broken down on a highway so they got the car pulled. Now I can see that actually selling a 5.20 was a mistake as besides getting stuck on highway, it was a legendary car. I hope one day I can buy this kind of car for "myself" with my "own" money. Done with my dad's sillyness.

    • @yogi799
      @yogi799  2 роки тому +2

      True, selling the car because of one well know (at this time) issue is irrational. plus the pump gave months of warning signs in my case! the fan would spin hard weeks before the job was due and the car overheated. so i am guessing your dad probably ignored or was unaware of these signs. i wish all failures were that announced. that said, Japanese cars have water pumps that last 15 years with no issues. 7 years for this one is a joke. hope the aftermarket one will last 10+ yrs

      @@yogi799 BMW engines are high performance and get extremely hot especially with these turbo charged engines and the cooling system seems to fail quickly due to the extreme amount of heat and workload it's under. By 70k miles the thermostat and water has had enough if you drive the car hard but if it's been driving normal most its life you can get it to 90k-115k before these fail. You can't compare a BMW to a Honda or Toyota which are basic little engines with nothing really in them. Also to the guy who sold his BMW due to the water pump failure your dad is an idiot and I'm sure whoever you sold the car to thought you were an idiot after he replaced the water pump the car is perfectly fine.
