    thanks for this, not made anything with a guard yet as still learning and still doing older designs that don't have a guard but when I do I will be doing much of this, by hand of course though lol, no room for much in the way of power tools in my shed and still want to keep things traditional, but as ever brilliant clear instructions that will be very useful to me and many others

    I only have 2 hints for making guards-
    Pack a lunch, you're going to be gone a while
    Buy twice the amount of material you need for guards, there are no happy accidents

    I was hopeful that you would be using NO MACHINERY (drilling press) to do the guard without expensive machinery, ie drills and files,a dremel tool only. Not everyone makes lots of guards etc. Thanks for the information I can use but try and imagine someone that's wanting to do a few as a test to see if it's viable and easy enough. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🙏😃👌🏻🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    I normally use a small ball peen hammer to texture the front. The key is to make sure the ball is polished so it gives a nice clean finish

    Do you ever use silver solder rather than epoxy to seal the guard? It is something my uncle taught me, that he learn when working in sheffield england as a cutler. When i asked why he said to help absorb shocks which can cause a tang to fracture and seal from blood seeping into the joint causing contamination ? Thank you for your video's, take care, God bless.

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  2 роки тому +2

      I have. I don't silver solder carbon blades because the solder stands out against the steel as the steel starts to take on a petina.

    Damn, 🔨 You're a lean mean peen machine!!
    The only thing that you could have added to this video would be the song:
    "Smells like Peen Spirit" by Nirvana...but then again, that would have thrown up a copyright flag, lol. But seriously, thanks Aaron!
    Too bad you can't make any $ teaching kids anymore. I'm betting Metal Shop isn't even offered in most High Schools.
    In my opinion, if it were, You would have been an awesome Schoolteacher & even more of an asset to your Community.
    Thanks for another lesson, Go Easy!

      I don’t have a milling machine . I have only Iron Workers tools and forge etc,however I scribe a line down my guard metal, clamp it in a vise , then clamp 1/2 inch steel blocks (4 of them) with a piece of blade steel that is thickness of knife between each block on either side . I wedge out the blank blade steel pieces , then drill and file between the 1/2 inch steel blocks , this keeps my cutting square and exact .I probably could harden blocks of thick spring steel after I drill and tap each side as if they were oversized plunge line guards

  • @nguyenkienknives
    @nguyenkienknives 2 роки тому +1

    No, definitely no. You must punch a little hole before drilling. And you must use a clamp to fix material. It’s too dangerous without clamp while drilling.

    • @Aleeknives
      @Aleeknives  2 роки тому

      The peice of stock was long enough to be stopped be the upright if it was pulled away from my hand but yes it should be suggested to clamp your work down. Center punching however is a personal choice. I generally choose a drill smaller than my overall dimension allowing a margin for error. Your points are 100% valid and well noted sir! Cheers
