    Backing trailer: Drive forward until trailer is in line behind your vehicle, if possible. Put your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel and move your hand in the direction you want the trailer to go when backing. Make very small steering movements. Pull forward slowly immediately if needed to get straightened out. Have bow and stern lines fastened to cleats and ready to use.

    Backing a trailer is a definite skill that can be done easier with small adjustments. You don't need to turn the steering wheel very much at all to be successful.

    When I was young and went to trucking school this is what helped me…..Pull down on the side of the steering wheel toward the mirror where you’re seeing too much trailer. Worked for me until I got the hang of it anyways.

      Better yet, practice backing with the trailer into and out-of an empty parking space located in a large deserted area of a parking lot like that found at a closed, or during after-hours of a shopping center or mall, BEFORE you head to the docks.

    Backing a trailer either comes naturally, as it did for me, or it doesn't! When in truck driving school, I was paired with two ladies, and after I had it down in 20 minutes, they took all FRICKIN DAY! There were 5 other trucks long gone because they had all finished their backup training, but these two ladies took that day, and the next morning to get it done, and still weren't great. UHG! Just as in watching these people backing up their boat trailers, UHG! 😁👍😎✌🗽

    People should practice pulling into a dock, by practicing against a channel marker or similar stationary object well away from crowds. Practice coming slowly straight in at 30? degree angle and just short of the 'dock' put in into reverse, turn the wheel TOWARD the dock, and rev the motor to both stop forward progress and pull the tail of the boat around parallel to the 'dock'. Bump it into neutral, job done!
    PRACTICE this technique away from crowds, until perfected. At a stressful boat ramp full of onlookers is not the place to be trying to figure it out.

    Not sure how much MORE visual aides this driver needs. He has guide poles, the trailer is wide enough he can see the fenders, he has side mirrors, rear view mirror, option to put the tailgate down, and unless that Honda truck is OLDER than 2013, it has a backup camera.

    • @philipstaite4775
      @philipstaite4775 9 місяців тому +1

      Agreed. Once you are very familiar with a vehicle and a trailer you can get away with large angles, sharp turns and "impressive" stuff. Until then, pull forward and get it mostly straight, mostly lined up on where you want it, then keep it that way with, as you say, small corrections.

    All of this make one wounder just how knowledgeable are they with the rules of the road when the boat is underway. They sure don't have any dock courtesy or knowledge of backing a trailed down a ramp. The state needs to make them take a driving educational course in both matters.

    • @richardbeckenbaugh1805
      @richardbeckenbaugh1805 9 місяців тому +2

      It doesn’t matter if they take a course. Washington state requires a course for all boat operators and it doesn’t make one bit of difference. All it is is a money grab by the state. Contracted out to private companies who do varying degrees of training from good to none. The quality of the operator is still the biggest factor. Some people are motivated to be the best, others do the minimum to pass whatever requirements the state sets. It shows on the water, it shows on the ramp. Some people can pass the class and still have no clue. Others get really good, really fast. Most have no clue.
