From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Hold On" is a song from the album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band by John Lennon. It features only vocals, tremolo guitar, drums, and bass guitar, typical of the sparse arrangements Lennon favored at the time.
The most upbeat song on Plastic Ono Band, the song's theme is emotional fragility. Lennon tries to assure himself that he and wife Yoko Ono have the strength to overcome their challenges, and if he holds on, "it's gonna be all right" and "we're gonna win the fight. Lennon explicitly namechecks himself and Yoko Ono, but this doesn’t detract from the universality of the message, as towards the end of the song Lennon expands the subject to encompass the whole world, singing that peace will be achievable when everyone will "see the light" and realize that we are all "one."
Musically, Lennon plays his guitar gently, applying tremolo, in an effect that matches "the soothing reassurance of the lyrics." Lennon took 32 takes experimenting with different approaches before hitting on this one. In the middle of the song, Lennon mutters the word "cookie", imitating the Cookie Monster from the US children's television show Sesame Street.
Lennon has explained the song as follows:
I'm saying 'hold on John' because I don't want to die ... I don't want to be hurt and please don't hit me ... Hold on now, we might have a cup of tea, we might get a moment's happiness any minute now. So that's what it's about, just moment by moment. That's how we're living now, but really living like that and cherishing each day, and dreading it too. It might be your last.

found this song a couple days ago and haven't stopped listening to it since. thanks for the lesson!
My pleasure. It's still such a fresh song.
In my opinion, the Plastic Ono Band album is probably the greatest album of all time due to its sheer depth.
Best Lennon album by a country mile.
Some guitarists are under the impression that the Beatles couldn't really play. They weren't virtuosos, but they could definitely play. John's playing here proves that.
It's very refreshing to find a guitar tutorial that sounds just like the song. Great job!
Thanks so much!
When I heard the "How not to be seen" reference, I knew I was in the right place. Great lesson, thanks!
LOL! Glad a few people got that and glad you enjoyed the video!
It's almost perfect, you sound exactly like Lennon in the song.
Thanks so much!
Perfect. Thank you! This song is one of the most beautiful of all time.
Thank you. I love this song as well!
Amazing tutorial, I've been looking for one for years. And I loved the theory bit. Thank you SO MUCH! You're a great teacher!
Wow, thanks! You really made my day!
Your tutorials are consistently accurate and perfectly explained. Thank you!
You're welcome. Thanks so much for the kind comment!
Not only love this album so much but you pick such great lessons!
Thanks Pete. I love the album and always felt this song to be a bit of an oasis. The angry and depressing music is strong and raw. I love that, but this song is good to clean the pallette!
I swear your playing nearly brought me to tears, more so than the original. Great video all-around, thank you!
You're welcome. And thank you for such a lovely comment. I really appreciate it!
One of my, if not, favorite songs of all time! thank you so much man
My pleasure. It's one of my all-time favorites too. Thanks for watching!
“COOKIE”

Glad you liked it! Thank you so much!
Very nice mark. That's a smooth solo 👍🏻
Thanks Daniel!
Amazing! Thanks a bunch Mark :)
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!
Hey Mark.
From now on I will think of you as Mr E.V. Lambert of Homeleigh, The Burrows, Oswestry.
(music and Python got me and my friends through grammar school in a very dreary and depressed 1970s Britain).
Great lesson, to a great song, from what I agree with you to be J.L.'s best solo album.
To misquote Shakespeare, I think that Plastic Ono Band is a work "...full of sound and fury, but [very defintely] signifying something".
I think that J.L. here is actually somewhat inspired by George's guitar playing.
Thanks very much for the lesson.
LOL! As long as you don't think of me as "Kevin Phillips-Bong" (the slightly silly candidate). The election didn't turn out so well for him.
I love the "rawness" of Plastic Ono Band. And while I really like "I Found Out" and other harsh songs, I'm always happy to cleanse the palette with "Hold On". Very well may be inspired by George!
thank you so much man ! really helped out 🙌🏽✨❤️
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching.
MARK! I am becoming a huge fan of yours! Great lesson!
if u know your harmonized major scale? WOW I know now.
Thanks Tony!
I really like your teaching style....your for me!
Thanks Sean! You really made my day!
Great selection! "Nobody Told Me" is also a good one...different record.
Good song for sure.
Very nice video, you sound such like a good person!
Thank you so much ... Aon both counts!
Nice job! Would love to see you do a lesson for Well Well Well
Thanks! That's a great suggestion too!
great vid
Thanks!
The intro sounds very similar to don’t let me down
That's true. Interesting. Never thought about that before.
Great choice Mark. Reminds me of Hendrix rhythm
Yes, it's sort of relaxed about it, but it's there definitely. Kind of like 1/2 way between what the Motown guys did and what Hendrix did. Same note ideas, but played more or less aggressively.

great zabel 🎸🤘👍🎼🤓
Style
Thanks!
@@MarkZabel you welcome 🎸🎼
9:28 Singing is on point Mark
Thanks!
Fantastic lesson, thank you!
PS, what wood is your guitar made of? Is it.........The Larch?
Thanks! Ha! That's funny. I don't remember making a Python reference, but ... Yeah, sure. Why not the larch? Love it!
It's similar to 'Don't Let Me Down'.
Yes, nice observation!
I was thinking the same thing! Yours was the first time i saw someone else say it.
Amazing ! Any tips for getting guitar to sound like that
Thanks! Yes, it's right here in the video - 2:25
Great lesson. What kind of tremolo pedal is that?
Thanks! It's actually built into the amp - a BlackStar ID TVP.
Hey Mark, Just want say thanks for all your lessons . Can u give us a good site that gives free accurate tabs?
Thanks Tony! I'm not into tabs, but the best site I've encountered is Ultimate-Guitar.com. They have a big community and rate the tabs. I don't know if it's free for basic use. I have a Pro account that cost less than $10. In any event, that's what I use if I look for tab.
After come to poppa maybe ....Easy lover by bailey and phil collins? the solo is so hard for me..I still cannot play it right.
Thanks. I already did that one a while back. ua-cam.com/video/ZXOqVMAdZDw/v-deo.html
Could someone tell me what effects he used? please
It's right at 2:26 in the video.
Hi! :) Why did you chose that pickups? Thank you.
Hi. I talk about the sound at about 2:30 in the video. It's all there.
@@MarkZabel Thanks, I hadn't seen the full video. UA-cam recommended it to me. Thank you.
@@MarkZabel The point is that I can differentiate the single coils, PAF and P90, but I don't understand the difference in sound in these smaller PAFs. That was really my question. I can physically understand that they have fewer turns on the magnets, and I suppose the sound could be halfway between a PAF and a P90, but I have never used these. Thank you.
@@williequiroga3868 Oh I see. Sure. Mini humbuckers are probably most like full-sized humbuckers (as opposed to regular single coils or P90s), except they're lower output, don't break up as easily and have less midrange. They don't have that "growl" of a P90 and are brighter and less powerful than a typical PAF. That's my 2 cents anyway. How that helps.
🍪;))
😀
the beginning lick really sounds like something done by jimi hendrix
edit : nvm you mention it haha
LOL! That's funny!
I wish I had your guitar....and hair :)
LOL! The guitar is affordable. It's a 2012 Tribute Les Paul. The hair??? Well, I grew it myself, so I'm not sure. :)
I am so fkn shit i literally can’t play a single chord
Yea seriously man you need to slow it down, no offence but this is just confusing
