It's because Sammo and the guys he works with know exactly what they're doing. They're professionals.. and in Sammo's case, hes been doing this since he was a kid.
You are right, the reason i hate watching nowadays martial art movie because i can't see anything.the fight very fake to me, only can see their hands and legs , i don't watch nowadays movie anymore .it's not worth it to watch legs and hands only in martial art fight
Sammo's fights are always creative, fast, snappy, and funny.. but he also knows how to make these fights look "painful". He wants you to feel those hits... and see the bruises. He also makes great use of dolly and tracking shots... especially angled ones. Also, he's the best at 'staging".. you know where everyone is at all times and there's always a logic to how the fights progress.
I wonder how many ppl nowdays that don't realize that Andy Lau was a great martial arts actor, before being known as a great *dramatic* actor? I know I keep forgetting, admittedly. 😊
I see Andy Lau on Tony Leung's league when it comes to acting but Leung is more talented in acting while Lau is more of a versatile actor. Shame he didn't do a lot of action martial arts movies.
Andy Lau was a good action actor like you could tell he put his energy into the action like how Bryan Leung (Beardy) would also put his all into these fights
Andy starred along side Jet Li in the Once Upon A Time in China action movies and did an awesome job in them too , there are some amazing fight scenes in those movies
Andy Lau, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and Tony Leung in 'Island of Fire' but back in our days when we saw it on VHS the movie was labelled as The Prisoner... was one of the best underated movies of all those actors
Considering that Andy Lau did not really know martial arts per se, he acquits himself well to the complicated fight choreography - and yet you hear/read about accomplished martial artists who really struggled with that kind of choreography (such as Ho Sung-Pak in _Drunken Master II,_ whom Jackie said lacked rhythm).
Andy lau was not known for being a martial artist, i can assure you he could handle himself in his prime and was a very decent martial artist in reality.
He's arguably the best oversized action star in movie history. Also one of the top figures in the HK film industry. He's done it all. Could also be the first Asian since Bruce Lee to have a lead role in a US action-based TV series (Martial Law) which lasted for 2 seasons. I couldn't think of anyone else before him, so I'm not sure.
like Jackie, most of his fight scenes are Undercranked (filmed at a lower frame rate and played back at 24fps). That's not to take anything away form him. .it was kinda the Hong Kong Style.
9:55 Oh my god, the skill required to control that kick just to make it a tap! Anyone can do a jumping roundhouse, but to make it a slight tap on contact is something else.
Eu não sabia que o Andy Lau era um artista marcial, pra mim ele sempre foi um ator, e só depois descobri que ele era cantor, aqui no Brasil ele é mais conhecido por ter protagonizado o filme Shaolin
Andy Lau is not a martial artist. But he spent alot of time doing fight scenes in his days at TVB, so that was good practice for him as he turned to movies. Plus he does seem to have a natural talent for action choreography among pop stars.
Fung Hark On @ 3:44! And since I see Master Lau Kar Leung's onetime assistant Ching Chu @ 3:13, I'm willing to bet that's Master Lau's protege Hsiao Hou stunting for Andy @ 7:49... looks a lot like him!
Jackie Chan said that Sammo was his upper classman during their Beijing Opera school years. Sammo was bully and took money off lower classman, but Jackie stood up to Sammo, and Sammo try to teach Jackie a lesson by beating him, but Jackie was too nimble for Sammo, and Sammo was unable to land a punch.
This is the only movie I haven't seen from this series. Doesn't look as good as the other movies but I'll have to get it to compete the set. Winners and sinners, my lucky stars, twinkle twinkle lucky stars and this movie
😐😐 i like old hongkong movies because even the actors/actresses didn't know kungfu but in the movie they look good in fight although difficult stunts all done by double. This is Hongkong golden era and it will never come back but there are plenty of old hongkong movies/dramas and some of them i haven't seen it yet. It feels like watching a new movie /drama for me. I am happy with that. I don't watch nowadays movie/drama anymore only old hongkong movie, taiwanese old movie/dramas, indian old movies that's what i watched. Even i only like terminator the old movie by arnold and x file mulder scully i missed this tv series. I remember there was no kissing scenes in x files (maybe only once )it's about acting not like 3 grade movie need kissing and you know bed scene so people will want to watch. I missed those days.
That dive down the stairs feels great when it works..although I did it over a fence and then down a slope on the other side...on grass. In my defence I was 7 and got sent to the headteacher for going "out of bounds"
I read in an article back in the nineties that he started avoiding doing martial arts movies later in his career due to an injured back from performing one of those high flying stunts, which is why he shifted to acting in triad movies that showed off his acting chops more than his kung fu chops.
Up until Sammo's entrance, the fight was choreographed by legendary former Shaw Brothers director Lau Kar Leung, naturally when Fatty arrives the choreography visibly changes from an almost traditional meets modern day style to Fatty's trademark full contact pub-work
Tantos filmes de artes marciais dos anos 80 assisti poucos filmes assim e gostaria de saber o nome desse filme lendário alguém poderia me dizer o nome do filme?
Less you all donno, Sammo Hung was the BIG BROTHER of Jacky Chan and Yuen Biao back in their childhood Beijing Opera school days. All can sing, dance, jump, somersault, punch and kick as well as handling various weapons from those school.
I really like this kung fu movie so how or what website did you get this from because this is the english dubbed version and I couldnt find this english dubbed version.
The one with the Japanese Sword; his character is a Yakuza leader and the actor was actually Japanese himself, Tetsuya Matsui and only 17 years old at the time, believe it or not.
I love this era. You can see the WHOLE fight. Instead of quick cuts and flash editing.
The camera is also scaled back, so you can see their leg movements.
It's because Sammo and the guys he works with know exactly what they're doing. They're professionals.. and in Sammo's case, hes been doing this since he was a kid.

When working with Billy Chow, he told Billy to actually hit him.
Billy was also a professional kick boxer.

I think Andy Lau play not so good in fighting.
Andy starred along side Jet Li in the Once Upon A Time in China action movies and did an awesome job in them too , there are some amazing fight scenes in those movies
Sammo Hung is the Einstein of fight choreography. Someone had to say it.
I love these Martial Arts films. Especially the fights.
Natural, speed and thrilling.
Andy Lau, Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and Tony Leung in 'Island of Fire' but back in our days when we saw it on VHS the movie was labelled as The Prisoner... was one of the best underated movies of all those actors
@D Yen The HK version is best due to the inclusion of two deleted fight scenes on other releases.
And the ending scene was takin to my beloved country
Andy Lau is not a real Kungful fighter, but he is the best actor

Andy Lau had a very interesting unquie cinema fighting style. He has good rythem. Very underated.
Sammo Hung always great but Andy Lau is impressive, especially being known only as a singer most of the time.

He is a martial artist before entering show biz.
He must be if he moves like that.

These boys sure know the art of fighting ❤
Fun fact : The actor playing the bad guy (Tetsuya Matsui) was only 17 in this movie
Woah really
The 3-piece suit makes him look older than 17
It was easy to tell that he was young, even in the suit, the baby face gave it away
