Everyone in the comments seems to be simping for Rory too much. Rory wasn't wrong for wanting to get paid, that is understandable given the materials and services provided. Rory was wrong for going on random forums and talking shit behind this guy's back. Rory had his number, if he had a problem, then he should have spoken to him man to man. This caddy bullshit of talking shit behind his back and refusing to speak to him again is unprofessional and would certainly make me never want to do any kind of business with him.
No offense to anyone, but all we get is one side. I'm NOT suggesting he's being dishonest, but all I'm saying is he shows making a call to Rory & then cuts away & tells us Rory didn't get back. We don't know Rory's side. This is just a video, & videos are easily edited. I do NOT know Rory personally, but there's a couple of guys that left comments that do know him personally & they say Rory isn't like he claims.
Ben should have asked Rory to his face what he owed for the parts, labor and use of Rory’s garage before he left. Rory is in buisness, he helps people all the time he can’t help people for free every time. Ben should have offered him an amount, then they could have agreed on something.
I am 68 years old. I would price all the parts new and send the guy a check. I would never talk shit about someone who out of the goodness of their heart gave you their shop and parts to get wheeling again. Send him the money and let it go. Nothing in life is free. You can look back on this and say you learned a lesson in life. I watch trailmater a lot he is a good guy I think.
Good for you l'm 68 also and don't care what happened as l know neither of them. And yes l've watching these guys for linger than l would like to admit.
100%. Dude should have paid him for the parts and the labor. Why would he think some guy HE called to bail him out would do it for FREE? This Ben guy is full of himself and was looking for a freebie.
Not sure you understand how UA-cam collabs work, They VERY often give each other things for shout outs and potential new subscribers. Which is what I believe Rory was doing but got butthurt when it didn't pan out for him. On top of the fact Rory is kinda known to trash talk people in those groups.
I have read through all of the comments in response to your video two months after you posted it Ben...and MOST of them (from good, smart, honest people, many of whom know Rory or have had experiences with him) AGREE (as do I) that you should have given Rory fair compensation for his help, his parts, the use of his shop and his time before you left, period. You didn't help Rory, he helped you, a lot...you had just gotten all of your broken Jeep parts, "in stock" and completely repaired THE SAME DAY with his shop, tools and help. Leaving him some money IS what MOST of the commenters said THEY (and I) would have done with a complete stranger we had asked for help and had just met under the circumstances you met Rory under and what he did for you. The majority of commenters have said you did not behave correctly in the situation and you made an assumption mistake...you will have to decide whether that is likely the case or not. ;)
Exactly.. He should have gave full price for the parts and thrown in a little extra for the convenience. You broke your truck bro; cough it up; It's the price of wheeling
Rory is a business and is accustom to using a ledger and submitting bills for parts and services rendered, yet Rory did not do it in this case. Why not? Completely contradictory to normal business. It seems more likely Rory needed to whine and then Rory got caught making up trash talk with his girls in their private FB subforum. What kind of man is @trailmater ? OTOH, Perhaps Rory conducts business outside the IRS rules and somebody should drop a dime on Rory and his business
My take is Rory doesn`t care about the parts. It`s the principle that you took all the parts , advice and use of the hoist without settling up. Rory didn`t want to put a price on anything he just wanted you to settle up what was fair on your side. You totally blew it. Rory doesn`t want anything to do with you now and for good reason.
What the hell is "settle up" anytime I have ever "settled up" I had a bill to "settle up" do you know Rory personally? You seem very sure about everything...
@@BenandBrandi Its courtesy within the rock crawling community. I am on the Rubicon Trail 10-15 times a year, things break. I give parts, or tools no charge but I ALWAYS get offered something.....Beer, $40 bucks...depending on what it is. I gave a guy a driveline for a JK, it costs hundreds....he offered money for it...I said $100 and have a fun trip. The smile was a mile wide, and I didn't feel taken advantage of with $100. Nobody has ever accepted parts for 0, they always offer.
You don't pull up to a guy's place, rob parts off his junker, tie up a whole bay, lift, and who knows how many tools, and expect to just walk out without paying something. I've never met Rory, but nobody uses my tools for free. You should've aknowledged that face to face and asked him straight up. Something like "man I know I borrowed your shop, lift, tools, and got those parts off your wrecked Jeep, so how much do I owe you for that?"
You forgot the employees pay and time and putting off other customers work getting done or maybe a personal project that we're working on but put everything off to help Ben to get going again but gave up a day and all the cost to help him out! But Ben has to do the hardest thing there is to do for him first and that is to admit he is completely wrong in every way he has acted and the way he has handled this. A true and sincere apology needs to be first! Rori is probly not contacting Ben to not listen to any foolishness. I realy hope it all works out in a peaceful and right way! I have Never heard of Ben and Brandi before this video so Rori don't need anybody advertising for him he already has his reputation built!
"A guy's place" or "A legitimate place of business following Utah State business laws" ? Moab Motorsports aka @trailmater is a legitimate business and UTAH STate law requires a bill to be submitted by the business to the client. I don't see Rory @trailmater acting like a business in many respects so I have crafted a letter to the Tax Board of The State of Utah reporting Rory and listing twelve potential violations in his business that I see. Somebody needs to look into the way Rory conducts business
@@devilshaircut9 so you're just here to stir up a stink? Imagine finding an asshole on the internet. Unheard of. Leave Rory alone. You don't even have correct information about him or his "buisness".
Life lesson for everyone. First time ever meeting someone and they are assisting you or helping you with something always give them something in return... even if they say no. Its the right thing to do.
Moab Motorsports is a registered business in The State of Utah and is required to submit a bill to any client in order to get paid. I wonder how the State of Utah would look at the way Rory conducts business, I wrote them a letter about Rory, listing 12 violations that I see.
Do you realize how fortunate you were to find the parts you needed nearby, the same day? Then throw in the use of his tools and hoist. All of that would have cost you thousands of dollars at a dealership. You couldn't even slip Rory 500 bucks? Rory wasn't the problem. They sure do things different in Missouri.
The State of Utah requires that Rory ACTUALLY submit the client with a bill for services rendered AFTER he has shown that Rory provided an estimate before the transaction or Rory may have committed a crime in the State of Utah. It appears Rory is now showing that @trailmater is receiving income OUTSIDE of his business and sheltering it from the State of Utah I have now written the State Of Utah Tax Assessor and informed them of @trailmater 's conduct on YT. Demanding payment after with no prior estimate could be construed as Extortion, not running payments through business can be tax evasion
Not that I owe you an answer.. but I’ll give you one.. the comments when this video was first released.. for the first month… was about 90 percent in favor of me… also all the people that were directly involved agreed with my outlook. So NO I’m not going to we address this months later with several Trailmater fan boys biased comments… take that for what it is…
@@BenandBrandi not a fan boy of Rory at all but at least I've seen him around for years. Your channel/video was recommended by UA-cam, so I watched. This was my introduction to you and your channel. Nothing is just a handshake man. Rory, Matt, Robby Layton, Bleepin Jeep, etc. Yes they do favors for eachother, and its ALWAYS a trade-off for other favors. Rory would never just slag someone, that man is generous AF. You used his shop, his tools, his parts. There's no way id walk out of there without giving him cash, regardless of what he says. What a levelheaded comment. Thanks! And yea definitely a misunderstanding. And I didn’t expect I would never have the opportunity to return the favor… I think that’s where so many that comment negatively don’t consider. I personally thought I was starting a new relationship with Rory and would return the favor in time! I was completely blindsided by all of this bull. I really just wished he would have said something in person.. and I made this video to explain that. Rory has since reached out. -Ben
I agree, not putting a blame thing on either man, as we see just bits and pieces . The only thing I can think of is, if I was the 1 in need, I'd have already figured out a dollar amount, and had it in my hand, for the other party to refuse, and he'd have to refuse it more than 2 times. But I'm old and weird that way :)
Rory is a business and should act businesslike. If a price is owed, Rory needs to submit a bill to the client. You are actually saying te client should "figure out what is owed" which is absolutely whack I have known passive aggressive girls that could learn from the way Rory contorts "friendly help" into a "business with bill due". I am actually writing the IRS about teh way Rory handles business and they can watch Rory's UA-cam channel as proof of @trailmater 's tax misconduct

I am not a Jeep owner or have been to Moab but even I know what Rory and Trailmater are to the offroad community and trails there locally. Really seems odd that you haven't. I'm guessing that's why he questioned you about saying you Never heard about him or his channel. Maybe he took it personal that you didn't acknowledge his accomplishments as a well established offroad recovery channel. Also, come over and "talk me out of it " means "make me an offer I can't refuse". Just my 2 cents.
If that is true, than that shows a serious lack of maturity. Running a business means you keep it professional. The moment you start acting erratic...you start to loose customers, or followers in this case.
@im_caiman4479 - Agreed... I heard a few who deal that way - "talk me out of it, make me an offer I can't refuse." That's Rory's way of doing business. @@BenandBrandi I live in the real world where nothing is free unless you been friends for a while. You should have slipped about $500 in that handshake. If he says you don't owe him anything, then you're good to go. Don't ever assume a person's parts, space, and time are free until they say we are square. If you look at it from Rory's point of view, I'm sure he has people try to get something free from him all of the time because they assume he makes all of his money from his channel.
Pay the man something out of courtesy the day it happens. You used his shop and parts. When I have someone who does something for me to dramatically improve my life I gladly pay them. I have never heard of your channel until you posted this video. Being perceived as dogging Rory in a video will likely cast poor light on you. It could be perceived as you tryiing to ride Trail Mater fame but whatever. I will not assume any motivations. I only know what I know about you from this video and thats not much. I probably would delete this video and cut my losses. In my (useless) opinion too many people have seen it already. I'm not sure how you could know about Matt and not Rory. Did you completely miss the Off-road Wrecker Games? If so how? Are you really that out of touch? It was only the biggest thing after King of the Hammers on UA-cam. Making a video "defending yourself" isnt necessary or beneficial. Let your reputation speak for you if it is good and don't worry about it. Right or wrong, you will never win a popularity contest against Rory. Sorry. Best wishes
I'm from Missouri too. Come talk me out of it doesn't mean "you can have it" here. The real story is you treated Rory like a resource and offered nothing in exchange. You said yourself you called him multiple times, and in all of those exchanges you were looking for something from him. Just delete the UA-camr mentality about views and subscribers and all that crap and look at what was actually exchanged. He gave you parts (more than you originally asked for) time, use of his shop and his knowledge, and you just told people he was cool. Now that he's had enough you're telling people what a bad guy he is, and recording videos of you leaving him subtly accusative messages and he's supposed to respond well to it? In fairness he could have responded better than how he did, but you created the situation entirely by not offering anything in return, and you have no right to complain.
Last I checked, come and talk me out of it means come check it out and throw me an offer. That’s the so cal gen-x’er point of view. I would have offered money in thanks after using his shop
I'm going to shake things up here. The best part is, is that the parts you got from Rory were not Rory's to hand out or sell." Unless" he bought the Jeep from either the owner or the insurance company. I'm sure the Jeep was a total loss so the at that point the insurance company pay's out to the legal owner of the Jeep then Rory could have bought it from the insurance company if the legal owner didn't want to buy it back from the insurance company. Maybe Roy's a salvage operator? Bud you should have put a couple hundred in that hand shake. Don't expect something for nothing especially when you get parts and full use of the shop. Think about it.

Ignorance broke your Jeep. I'm with a lot of others making comments here. You should have brought up the subject of payment with him. Even if he refused, you should have laid $500 or more on him. You got parts from him, when none were available elsewhere. You got use of his shop, and now you have an attitude about the help you got. If you could have found a shop with the part and got your Jeep in immediately, it would have cost you $1000+. And now you are using his name to get views on your channel to whine. I'm sure when you dropped Matt's name Rory figured "a friend of Matt is a friend of me" and then talked to Matt . So Rory gave you parts, let you use his shop, tools and everything and thought a hand shake covered it? Could of offended to take them out to lunch or dinner or anything. I understand the off road community helps each other out but after all that using his shop then you want parts sent to his shop? I'm sure Rory felt taken advantage of. Nothing is ever free.
Ben, put on your big boy pants and send Rory some cash, check, gift card, some new Yankum ropes... SOMETHING. The parts and shop time you used are valuable. As you well know if no one in Moab had any... You know what shop time is worth, I'm sure and what the parts cost if you get them at a store. Pay the man already.
How much? Rory didn't say because he just wants to whine on the FB private Sub-forum to fill his ego. It is not a good idea to air your dirty laundry in public. Just mail a check to his business address for the parts you took, and time spent using his shop. Don't ask, just do it.

So i know rory personally, well itd been a few years since we hung out. But never the least you'll never find someone as kind as him. That man has been through more tough times than anyone i know, but even then would give you his shirt of his back. I know personally where he has been screwed over multiple times, yet he stiil keeps giving. Honestly it probably was a huge misunderstanding. I don't think Rory is sour about it, and he's a smart ass almost always! I think he's just screwing with him like he does with Matt, and Paul, and really everyone else. People like you are what kill the offroad community. It's not about the fact that everything seemed chill, it's about the principle. You rolled into his shop, use his shop for a few days, his tools, and even got parts but you didn't even bother to give him cash in return just cause everything "seemed cool". If this was your buddy, would you do the same? Not even offer cash, throw some beers in, and/or food?
Yeah you’re right… I should have bought him a $4 beer.. all better. Damn me for ruining the “off-road community”! I’ll start droning more so I have spare beer to give other off-roaders…
But it is NOT a buddy, it is a business. Moab Motorsports is a registered business in The State of Utah that is required to submit an itemized bill to any client in order to get paid. Rory did not do that and Rory caused all the problems But Rory was selling Shady, crashed out parts and there is HUGE liability in that
Wow. I can see that some parts of this were a misunderstanding... yup... Rory was being a bit standoffish... because you started things with the whole dismissive never heard of you stuff. Most anyone would take that exactly as it appeared. Thanks for the help and parts, but yea, I've never heard of you... the tone and attitude was not a fun loving inquisitive thing, it was dismissive. That being said, you should have paid him, or been more thankful from jump. The "I'm a UA-camr" hubris was honestly off-putting. Not to be offensive, but you're not on the same level as Rory and his Trail Mater channel. This whole hey buddy let's collab and go do the trails stuff... was TOTALLY the wrong approach. The man let you use his shop, tools, full smattering of parts, and most importantly his time... I don't know where or how you grew up, but you always need to offer money, offer paying for dinner, or beers, etc... then it's up to them to turn you down. Most often they will. Be humble my dude. The icing on the top of this shit sunday is this "defend myself" video... it's ABSOLUTELY NOT NECESSARY. It reeks of seeking views and UA-cam clout via causing UA-cam drama. Your speculation of what Rory's motives were tells us all we need to know. The damage is done. I hope he never calls you back. I hope he's done with you. He has no reason to reach out or clarify anything. This is why the out of state jeep community is kinda despised by locals. I'd say a good 50% of them are a bit too full of themselves. Which sadly gives the whole jeep community an undeserved bad rap.
@BenandBrandi Haha. Ok, man. That's a good one! I'm not the one who had his pride hurt so bad I had to do a "defend myself" video. You're defensive responses to all of these critical comments tell us all we need to know about you. Some people learn from things, some people double down because they can't cope with being wrong. OK I have been a subscriber of Rory's for a long time now. He is a business man he works with people he saved you time and money. He let you use his shop and you thought that was all free. There is a respect thing that all UA-camrs and people in the off road community have they work together on stuff. At the end of the day business is business you choose to take advantage of that in every way. Nothing in this world is free he would of made you a good deal because that is how he does business. I have never been to Moab I know how business is done.
Actually… I spoke with him a few days ago and he said he would have done it for free “if I would have just asked” me asking when I first talked to him in the phone “how much do you want for that thing” either didn’t count or he forgot. It was an obvious misunderstanding on both sides. (And yes in a good society there IS things for free. People should just always return the favor)
@BenandBrandi I just seen your message since I am not subscribed. Correction it was a misunderstanding on your part in many ways. First you assumed as u admitted that talk me out of it means free when it doesn't. Second instead of handling it like a business man you made the choice to disrespect him on here which made you look like an inexperienced amateur when it comes to business. I, also dont believe you didnt or hadnt heard of Rory " trailmater". You were going thru that area and never researched what other fellow youtubers that off-road might be helpful in case something went wrong or to chill with.
Can you see the side of a shop that tells you come on over and talk me out of it? (When it’s a 4 hour round trip drive) And then never asks for any type of payment and just lets you leave? Or does that seem suspicious to you also?
I'm in the Deep South, Louisiana and "Talk Me Out of It" means How Much Is It Worth To You, to get you out of a bind but not MSRP price. You used his parts and equipment. I would have dished out a couple of hundreds and hand it to him, with out asking a amount. If he says No Pay, then it's done. If he asked for a larger amount, then that's what it takes.
the way I'm looking at it, is that he said that Rubicon just came in from a roll over. Is he just storing that jeep while insurance deals with it? its obviously a total loss so is he just pulling parts off a totaled rig that's on his property? probably so. IDK i could be wrong.

When I watched the beginning and saw you beating the he-double tooth picks out of your Jeep’s drivetrain, WHILE IT WAS WINCHING, I got a lot of insight into why there are so many off-road recoveries. All you had to do was take it easy, and let the winch pull you out. It was obvious you were telling the truth about not watching Trail Mator, or you would have known that much. I just couldn’t watch anymore after that.
Exactly! What was the winch for if you're still going to dog your rig that hard! Might need a little more experience off roding before you launch a UA-cam channel, unless it's off roding for beginners and what not to do.
Realistically, I believe this video should be taken down. If that jeep was rolled over, a couple days ago, that's probably going for an insurance claim. Now you have put out video evidence of parts being taken from that jeep, which had/has an active claim against it. I have not watched the whole video, but I have had a blown drive shaft, in Moab. I had to go to Rory, who didn't help me, like you got helped. I was ok with that. I still found my parts and finished out an event. This is now how I would go about this situation.

To those of you saying that that is not the way the "Jeep Community" behaves, keep in mind, this is not a case where someone brakes down on the trail and then gets help getting to safety by another trail user, this is a man with a business, with expenses, with bills, and a family to support. Second, as a citizen of Utah, why do you think it is OK for you to be putting your stupid stickers on trail signs? Yeah, i get it, you were not the first. Still, that does not make it right or legal. Ben from man to man the fact you made this video publicly shaming or calling out someone else for any reason at all or “defending your reputation” is wrong. This video should not have been made. That was low, turn the other cheek, take the high road whatever you want to call it, this should have been handled in private and not put on the internet to further stir the pot. Your Burning bridges rather then repairing them, from what I can see outside looking in sounds like a misunderstanding on both parts. Just my thoughts. The majority of commenters have said you did not behave correctly in the situation and you made an assumption mistake...you will have to decide whether that is likely the case or not. ;)

We don't do shit like this guy in Missouri he is definitely a yuppie...
The State of Utah requires that Rory ACTUALLY submit the client with a bill for services rendered AFTER he has shown that Rory provided an estimate before the transaction or Rory may have committed a crime in the State of Utah. It appears Rory is now showing that @trailmater is receiving income OUTSIDE of his business and sheltering it from the State of Utah
I have now written the State Of Utah Tax Assessor and informed them of @trailmater 's conduct on YT. Demanding payment after with no prior estimate could be construed as Extortion, not running payments through business can be tax evasion

Ben, put on your big boy pants and send Rory some cash, check, gift card, some new Yankum ropes... SOMETHING. The parts and shop time you used are valuable.

But Rory was selling Shady, crashed out parts and there is HUGE liability in that
It’s ok man. You will heal from this…

OK I have been a subscriber of Rory's for a long time now. He is a business man he works with people he saved you time and money. He let you use his shop and you thought that was all free.

I can sympathize with ya brother, there is a time to stand up and defend you and yours but over an axle shaft and a post I’m not sure that was it..…….
