Like so many here, I have woken up and spent the morning with Laura. Getting inspired to start my day all while drinking my cup of coffee in the morning. This morning, however, is a very special morning, I’m getting married today (we’re eloping)! As I started to get ready, I put on your video, like I do every morning, and just felt like you and the community you’ve built have been along my side for a lot of new beginnings. Starting college in a brand new big city, graduating college, covid, finding a passion for container gardening, starting my new job, and today getting married, Garden Answer is always here. I just want to say thank you for sharing your passion and being such a bright light. The impact you are having on people is immeasurable.

I think between the Elderberry & the beach would be a perfect spot for some type of birdbath with a bubbler in it. It would give a water intrest with the benefit of giving the birds and pollinators a place for a drink on a hot summer day 🐦🐝🦋

Variations of purple and orange with a pop of red or white here and there make up my landscape this summer and I am loving it.

Confessions: I was so sad when you decided to change the "Moon Garden" cause I Loved it so much --- but this West Side Garden is now what I call "The ROYAL Garden" the colors are amazing! The Midnight Masquerade/ Penstemon is the Bell of the ball, the way she dances gracefully is a pure delight! Heading to my garden center......again!!!!
I’ve been struggling with figuring out reds and yellows for my different spaces. I’d love to see videos like this for each of the colors! And maybe even videos for different textures, like grassy, feathery, etc, since you mentioned including different textures if you’re doing all green.

The West Garden is looking amazing - so lush, full and colorful. It is incredible that many of the plants have just gone in this year. You have a beautiful vision for this area Laura.
This is so refreshing to see and realizing it’s okay to just slowly add stuff to a space. We just built a few years ago on raw land and now that my baby is 3 I’ve been so overwhelmed trying to get a plan all together of where to start. Threw in some creeping phlox and hostas last year and that was it. Just going to slowly keep picking away. This is our forever home so I need to remind myself there is no rush.
Congrats on your home build. We built our forever home 9 yrs ago- best thing I did was plant lots of trees first (over 60!)- I would focus on those first then add in shrubs for structure and winter interest (evergreens)- then the easier fun stuff like perennials and annuals. So enjoyable to watch the trees grow, bloom and change colors each season as we added foundation beds, etc. it’s still a work in progress over here but I’m enjoying the process and learning as I go. Good luck to you!!

For my afternoon sun pocket (4:30-7 pm zone 8b south Alabama) I had double impatiens by fiesta bonita (dark fuschia pink but called burgundy) last year and they surprisingly loved that spot. I accidentally planted them thinking the space was full shade with filtered light but I underestimated the tree canopy (also wind damage, removed a limb). They did great! And bloomed until December!!!!! I didn't even waste fertilizer on them because I was so sure I'd have to move them. They were so prolific even my 12 year old son who doesn't know the name of a single flower, commented: "wow, we need more of those!"

I just manually removed 3 red rocket barberry shrubs in my yard, they were beautiful, but the thorns were not safe for my small kids, and the fact that they can harbor huge amounts of ticks, and in MN, that means a huge risk of Lyme disease. Safety over beauty for me!
I also just picked up these same 2 coleus plants about an hour ago from my garden center for my containers!
I live in Laura’s area and we don’t have ticks that carry Lyme, except in the Owyhee mountains; none in developed areas.
That would be nice. I’m sure the ones sold here in the centers that I see are sterilized, I know brands like proven winners and burpee won’t even ship them to MN because they’re restricted here. It’s too bad since they are sooo pretty.

I have a green variety of Japanese barberry in my flowerbed that turns a brilliant orange-red in fall.

I’m going to the nurseries today to see if there are any clearance plants. That’s how I save about 50% or more. This year I’m going for more coral and hot pink
I do that too! Yesterday, I went to Home Depot and all they had were some sorry looking hydrangeas, but I bought some anyway because they will look beautiful in no time.
I love clearance plants! Most of the time they just need a little TLC & they end up being perfect!

We planted 36 heucheras along a sloping driveway, stacked stone wall, and we get many compliments on them…we alternated silver gum drop and wild rose. We do have space in between to plant something else and I winter sowed some echinaceas but they are soooooo slow to grow! In the meantime, my daughter is giving me 20 berry chiffon coreopsis which I think will look good. I love to see your garden grow along with mine!
