  • HELLO MY LOVELIES!
    Since I am graduating college in 1 day I thought I should make a campus tour video for any of you that might be interested in going to UCSB! (I also dragged Cam along for it haha) I tried to make it as thorough as possible and that is why it’s so dang long but at the end there is a campus Q&A, which hopefully can answer almost any question you might have about our school. If not though, feel free to leave yor questions down below and I’ll do my best to answer them!
    P.S. Timestamps are below so that you can easily find what you’re looking for!

    Amazingly thorough tour. I haven't been on campus since I was a student there in 1970. It was wonderful to be able to revisit it through this video. The campus appears to have expanded but not changed in character. It was nice to have Cam along for the company. The inserts and the q&a at the end were appreciated. Your future in film production looks bright!

    Thank you so much for this, I've decided almost fully in UCI, but I wanted to tour my top 3 UCs I was accepted at and my tour at UCLA is tomorrow morning. Berkeley and Santa Cruz are just too far otherwise I'd have done my top 4, but this is an amazing tour and I'm glad I got to see my 3rd choice before submitting my decision (just a little ways in still have to finish your wonderful tour), but this is the best online tour I've seen for any of the campuses so I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates you doing this. wait i totally agree with the lack of football being a downside! I loved football in high school and I would cheerlead on the sidelines. when I was picking a school one of my factors were that a football team had to be there, however, I did end up picking ucsb. I'll miss the football

    • @annika_helmer

      Same!! At my high school football wasn’t a huge deal so I was hoping that I’d get to experience some bigger football games in college but unfortunately that was not the case 😕 The good news though is that UCSB is still very sport heavy so there’s always a game of some kind that you can go to and soccer at UCSB is almost as big as football at other schools so if you want that big game vibe then def go to some soccer games!

    I heard you say that you’re a film major, I’m trying to decide if I’m going to go here and would love it if you could tell me how you liked that major? Thanks!

    • @annika_helmer
      @annika_helmer  4 роки тому +5

      Lindsay Skrabo Yes! Sorry in advance for how long this is, I just finished writing it and I didn’t expect to have this much to say lol
      The official title of the major is “Film and Media Studies” and I definitely feel like it was the perfect fit for me. Quick backstory: I entered without a major and thought that I would end up doing some sort of marine bio or psych type of major. I tried a variety of classes and ultimately decided that those majors just weren’t for me. Don’t get wrong, the science behind it all really fascinates me but I just wasn’t passionate enough about it all to put myself through grueling lectures and labs and studying. So after a year at UCSB I took a moment to reflect on what I was passionate about growing up, what my hobbies were when I was younger (and what I still am passionate about) and one of those things happened to be film. If this UA-cam video and all the footage I took isn’t an example of how much I use cameras on a daily basis then I don’t know what is lol. So I looked into being a film major and it was the best decision for me.
      Here are some quick pros and cons of the major at UCSB specifically: PRO, you get to watch a LOT of movies and that counts as a class. CON, they’re not always going to be movies you want to see but you’ll still have to sit through them and takes notes for the papers you’ll have to write later. PRO, there are some great hands on classes where you get to work with all types of film equipment and create your own works of art. CON, overall it’s not a very hands on program and there will be a ton of writing and analysis and history and theory taught in lectures. A lot of students work on projects outside of class, often with other students. PRO, if you’re seriously interested in film it is a great way to meet very talented people with a similar interest, a lot of which are heading to LA after graduating and could be a great network to have. CON, and this is my own experience, I didn’t click very well with a lot of the students in the film department. I guess we just had very different types of personalities or ways of approaching things but there were a few that I got along great with (there will always be those few! And quality over quantity anyway amiright) Lastly, a big CON for me was that if you enter the major knowing almost nothing about film like I did you might feel very behind, incompetent or unqualified or whatever you want to call it because you’ll be surrounded by many students who live and breathe film. I felt like a fraud the entire time, like I had nothing to offer, or like I skipped a few grades and had to try and catch up. However, I realized later on that a lot of people actually felt that way and hid it like I did so they wouldn’t feel stupid in front of the students and professors that already seemed to know everything. But a big PRO that I discovered about myself not already being well versed in film was that I brought a different approach and perspective to the table that some students didn’t - the ones who stuck with what they already knew and the film “rules” and norms that have been in place for forever. I had a professor tell me once that one of the papers I wrote was unlike anything she has ever read and that I was able to analyze things in such a unique way. Getting that feedback was the affirmation I needed to make me feel like I was in the right place even if I felt out of place. Also, fun fact, she now uses that paper of mine in her current lesson plan so even though I felt unqualified almost my entire time there, I guess I did have something to offer after all 😊
      I hope this helped!!

    • @LindsaySkrabo
      @LindsaySkrabo 4 роки тому

      Because the major is heavily writing and analysis based, would you say it’s a pretty difficult course or does the project and movie time ease it out a bit? Also, I’m not super into movies and similar to you not much of a film junkie already, but my goal is to make music videos. Do you remember practicing anything related to music videos or having the opportunity to make one? :)

    • @annika_helmer
      @annika_helmer  4 роки тому +2

      Lindsay Skrabo It honestly depends on the classes. Some are like essay writing boot camps and it’s actual torture whereas others are all project based and you’re making short films every week. There are also different paths you can take within the major. For example, if you wanted to be a screenwriter there are multiple courses specifically for that. I was never aware of any courses related to music videos though but I took a sound engineering class at one point and you learn a lot about effects and scores and all that good stuff. It was a crazy hard class but the professor was very understanding. Ultimately, there are going to be certain classes that everyone in the major is required to take and those are all very writing based but once you pass those you can start customizing your schedule more toward your particular interest. If you get a chance to browse through all the FAMST (film and media studies) course options it might help you figure out if UCSB offers anything related to your interests

      Hi! If you’re looking for off campus housing I lived in San Clemente Villages one summer and loved it. I also had some friends who lived in the Santa Ynez Apartments and they loved it there. If you’re looking for on campus housing that has a variety of students I’d recommended Manzanita Village (I lived there all 4 years except summers) but it’s more of a dorm type situation so if you’re looking for more of an apartment type of situation I’d recommend the first two! The one thing I loved about Manzanita Village though is that it’s right at the edge of campus so you’re technically on campus but can walk into isla vista within a couple of minutes. Also, even though the bathrooms are shared they have locks so you can have one to yourself if need be!

    I got accepted to UCSB as a film and media studies as a transfer. How did you like the major? Would you recommend going there for film? How was the classes? Thanks!

    • @annika_helmer
      @annika_helmer  3 роки тому +1

      OMG Congrats!! 🎉😍 I loved the major, it was definitely the right decision for me. I entered undecided and bounced around between marine bio, psych, and sociology for a bit before landing on film & media. It took a little soul searching to realize that something I love to do as a hobby could actually be my major and career one day lol. As for the classes I do have to say that some are brutal and some are easy (same goes for almost every major) but for film some of the most brutal classes are the ones where you have to write a lot. UCSB’s film & media major is a “critical studies” type major so there will be a lot of movie watching and analyzing and you will learn a lot about film history and techniques. There are a good amount of hands on classes as well but you kind of have to get through the writing ones first. I remember one class had us write a new essay every other week. It was something like 8-10 pages and she would assign the prompt on Mondays and expect the completed essay on Fridays (wouldn’t even give us the weekend to prepare or anything - like how rude 😂. I swear some teachers really think we don’t have other classes/assignments). Anyway, to sum it all up I guess I’d say it’s not the most hands on school for film but you do get a lot of opportunities to work on projects both related and unrelated to class. There will be a lot of writing and even though you will watch a lot of movies it’s not an easy major. Also, there are some really incredible guest speakers that pop over from LA that make it so worth it.
      Little anecdote: I remember in one of my very first film classes we had one of the writers from modern family come speak to us and tell us all about his experience working on the show. At the end we had to take a quiz and he was still sitting on the stage when we had to turn our quizzes in. There were different piles at the edge of the stage for the quizzes based on who your TA was but I’d forgotten my TA’s name and had no idea what I was doing. I was a few feet away from him and I guess he noticed that I looked kind of lost and stressed so when I glanced up for a moment he gave me one of the most reassuring smiles and whispered in my direction, “don’t worry, you’re doing just fine.” For some reason that worked like a charm and even though it was a very overwhelming 2nd or 3rd day in class my stress just disappeared. It could have been what he said or maybe I just didn’t have the mental capacity to stress anymore because I was so shocked that a famous writer decided to comfort me. Either way, I left Pollack Theater that day and was like “he’s right, I got this” 😂 To this day that moment still means so much to me 🥰
      Sorry that was a lot lol but I hope it answered your questions! Let me know if you have any others ☺️

      @sissirivas4880 3 роки тому

      Thank you so much for responding back and the great information that you provided! I have three other questions about the students and professors in film. Did it feel like there was a competition between the students? That’s one thing I’m afraid of and how are the professors? Are they nice, and equal between men and women and are helpful? Do students go to grad school for film production such as UCLA, NYU, or USC and if yes, do you know how helpful the department are?

    • @annika_helmer
      @annika_helmer  3 роки тому +1

      @@sissirivas4880 You’re welcome! Honestly, speaking from my experience, there was a feeling of competition among students but it was kind of subtle. It was never verbalized, meaning I never heard people talking about how much better they or their projects were than others. It was the kind of competition that you get when you have hundreds of creative people in a major that are just trying to impress others with their work. In most of the classes where you’re watching movies and analyzing them, learning the history and writing essays, there isn’t a feeling of competition. It’s in the hands-on classes where you might be creating short films (or something like that) that the feeling of competition becomes more apparent. However, like I said it’s a subtle feeling and part of the reason why I felt it could be because of my own insecurities. My entire time in that major I felt pretty incompetent. 😅 Have you ever heard of the imposter syndrome? That’s what it was like for me lol. In the analysis classes I actually felt pretty good about my work. In office hours I had a professor tell me that my approach when writing about a particular film was brilliant. She’d been showing the same film every year to every class she taught and said she’d never seen anyone analyze the way I had and found it very refreshing. So like I said, I never felt too bad about my work when it came to writing. However, when it came to actually making things like short films or sound editing projects I felt like a fish out of water. There is a lot of diversity among the film students in regards to skill set. When I entered UCSB my knowledge of equipment and editing was as basic as it could get. On the other hand, there were students who lived and breathed filmmaking and had been working on projects for years. Some had even interned at places in LA back in high school where they learned a good amount about film before coming to UCSB. When I watched their finished projects and compared them to mine it felt like comparing an academy award winning film to a home movie that a five-year-old accidentally filmed. 😂 Even though there are moments like that you are not alone if you feel like you know nothing about film. A majority of the students in the major are all in the same boat. Also, I got to know one of the guys who created one of the “academy award winning worthy” films (we’re actually really good friends now) and I came to learn that even he felt a lot of the same insecurities I did. That’s actually one of the biggest lessons I took away from there - that no matter how skilled you may be there’s always someone who’s less skilled and someone who’s more skilled than you. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses and no matter what competition you may feel in the major a lot of the students come together to help each other out.
      As for the professors I’d say they’re pretty equal and helpful. Of course, there will be some that you don’t click with and you’ll think they are mean or annoying. For the most part though I had no problems with mine! One thing I do want to note about professors and the differing skill levels of students is that, yes, professors will be impressed by projects that look really professional and well done. However, they seem to love watching students who come in with almost no skills learn and improve and even if their projects still look like a 5 year old made them they look for the progress and they love it!
      I actually don’t know too much about grad school for film majors. I didn’t go to grad school and the few friends I made in my major didn’t either. I do know that it’s an option though! After getting a degree in film from USCB I’m sure that you’d qualify to go to any of those places. For this question I feel like it may be best if you contact the Film department at UCSB for more info!

      I was scared too, especially because I didn’t have any friends who were also going to UCSB. The first few weeks were pretty lonely and overwhelming but once you settle in a bit, get your own routines going, and meet new people it should be a lot less scary ☺️

      where from Germany do your relatives come from? Here in Bavaria there are only very very rarely lizards, sometimes snakes but I'm personally rather afraid of them, almost get a heart attack when they are suddenly in front of me :D
      Yes I will definitely visit the Los Angeles area in the next few years, if Corona is finally at least halfway under control, looks really beautiful there, in Europe probably most comparable with Croatia which is only a few hours drive from me but now all borders are closed more or less...

I’m not really afraid of them though, but I do try to be careful of snakes. Croatia?? As a Californian I don’t know if I agree that LA is comparable to Croatia 😂 Croatia looks GORGEOUS from what I’ve seen and although LA does have it’s beautiful moments I’m sure it doesn’t hold a candle to Croatia 😍

      @@annika_helmer Really 😅you still scare when what crawls in front of you after you have already caught so many, has never bitten you a lizard or are they different from snakes?
      Yeah I don't know exactly why snakes scare me so much maybe because a good friend of mine was bitten when we were only about 8(only by a grass snake but still that probably just stays in your head, she didn't let go of his foot that fast either 😅)
      Yesss :D hm I thought more about the nature and wildlife, not what people have built there... In that field Croatia can not quite keep up I think 😂 is just smaller, much smaller, the whole country got almost the same population than LA, i was there with Approx 30 students and the company who payed for everything for that trip chartered a private Yacht and we shipped from Porec to limski fjord was a really nice Holiday.
      I think LA or the whole metropolitan area there would be too big or densely populated for me to live there i think i would feel too anonymous, unless I would be very very rich like Markus Persson (notch of Minecraft) for example 😂😂
      Doesn't hold a candle means ist nicht überlegen / is not superior am i right, sorry never heard that before lol
      Ah Hamburg exactly the other side of Germany where I live, have been there actually a few times really nice city.

      I don’t know if the room applications have changed in the last 5 years but when I was a freshman you had to fill out your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd room choices with the options being a single room, a double room, or a triple. I heard that people often get placed in their second or third choices so I wrote “single” for all 3 😂
