I disagree with moving into Isla Vista your freshman year. Saving money is one thing, but unless you know people to move in with, you are likely to become isolated. Dorm life helps you to meet different people in a natural way all at once. The usual situation is dorm first, Isla Vista sophomore year.
i know this comment was a while ago but do you have any advice for getting around this transferring in as a junior? is it still possible to have the community feel coming in that late?
Grace Blondell - Hi Grace! I attended UCSB and my son graduated last year. When I attended, there were on and off campus dorms and apartment type housing that catered to upperclassmen. Looking on the current website there seems to be plenty of housing that caters to transfers. I hope that you have a wonderful time as a Gaucho. Join a club, sorority or study group to meet new people. Don’t be shy to reach out because you’re all in the same boat. Good luck and enjoy the superb weather and biking round the gorgeous campus. www.housing.ucsb.edu/community/transfer-student
This is a coddled mindset. In the real world you arnt unnaturally placed to meet people. You have to go out and try.. people would develop better if they weren’t spoon fed adulthood out of highschool
@@splashmontanacapone8981 Swimming lessons represent a coddled mindset. When you're actually swimming no one's going to be standing over you making sure you don't drown. kids would develop better if they were air dropped into the middle of the Pacific
I am dying of laughter because you're talking about eating junk food at 4:50 and your roommate is eating a tub of ice cream in the background at that exact same time. hilariously ironic and an actual representation of me lol Also, I'll be attending UCSB this fall (:
There's definitely some moments where it gets off hand (there was racist graffiti a couple years back and the occasional white frat culture poc exclusion etc) but I found it very easy to engage in respectful debates with people of the opposite view. On campus it's very respectful but outside of campus is where it can get a little dirty. Does that make sense? Feel free to ask for more clarification :)
@@baconear7155 After reviewing the lack of affordable housing in Santa Barbara/Goleta, I decided to attend UCR. A 1 bedroom apartment is around 2500 in Santa Barbara, and a single studio is in the 1600-1900 range. I pay $722 for a one-bed apartment 25 minutes away from UCR. I'd rather go to this school and have my own place than transfer to UCSB and share a three-bedroom apartment with five other students.
I'm 90% sure I'm going to accept my admission to UCSB for this fall! And I'm going to be an English major as well. Are there any tips regarding courses you could give me?
Hey guys! I know I've been totally MIA for the past year but I'm going to upload a video soon featuring a tour of my apartment in IV as well as other freshman advice I forgot to mention in this video. Aside from answering the questions people commented below, I'd love to answer new ones as well. SoOoo, feel free to comment more questions & I'll answer all of them in the upcoming vid!
I saw this video about a year ago when I was thinking about college and whatnot and now I've come back to it to happily say that I committed to UCSB. But also, I bought very very similar sweater at open house a couple days ago. I think mine is just a bit darker.
I can't wait to attend UCSB in fall 2018, I'm honestly so excited but since I got admitted to major in computer science i am also extremely nervice. Can't wait to prove everyone wrong
I wish I would have known: * my roommates would suck * nobody initiates conversation (and when they do, its only to get help, and as soon as they get help, you'll never hear from them again) * clubs are quiet, awkward, and antisocial * people who party wouldn't invite me to join them * frats mostly exclude guys from parties * girls would only talk to me so long as it involved me helping them on homework * iv is full of homeless people * bikes are way overpriced in iv, buy them online * statistics, mathematics, and programming get more painful as you get deeper into it. pick an easy major edit: advice to future freshmen don't walk on the beach your feet will be covered in tar dont walk off paths or in low visibility areas, you will step in feces
woah my middle name is vianna! and also, thanks for the tips and advice. i'm currently an incoming senior in high school and i'm just trying to decide where to apply to college...this helped a lot!
Anyone have advice for transferring into an Engineering major? Some academic advisors weren't so helpful in implying I should just give up. I'm attending UCSB this fall.
Hey umm I have a question is it possible to get a full rise scholarship to UCSB? Or can financial aid really give you alot if your a low income family ?
Thank you so much for this! I'm attending 2017-2018 and I'm really nervous 😅 I know this is a stupid question, but is everyone at UCSB good looking? I'm asking bc I'm chubby and I'm average or something. I happen to be insecure and all, so I want to prepare myself haha. I'm also an introvert. Thanks again for this vid. The end was funny x)
To be 100% honest, most of the people here are really fit and good looking but only because we have both the beach and the mountains and people tend to exercise a lot. I know a lot of people who had body image issues going into UCSB, but once you get used to college and have a couple crazy nights partying in IV with just a crop top and a bikini bottom (this will happen trust me lol), you'll realize that no one actually cares what you look like. Also I know sooo many introverts who became really open or just embraced their introvertedness once they came into UCSB. The best advice someone ever gave me here is that ucsb is one of the most supportive environments you could possibly be in, but only if you let it be. Don't psych yourself out too much! :)
Vianna Cecilia thanks for saying this bc every time I visit the school I feel like I'm the only plus size person there, so I've been feeling really nervous.
There are plenty of average looking people here as well. Plus once you get here you can make the effort to lose weight and get healthy if you want. The weather is always nice so it inspires people to go outside, and we have lots of fun things to do like surfing, rock climbing, hikes, etc. Another factor is there is huge support for healthy diet, lots of restaurants and grocery where you can buy vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, etc.
Hi there! I'm not sure if you've found an answer to your question already, but I was just recently accepted into UCSB! My stats were: SAT: 1310 ACT: 28 GPA: 4.1 and that's excluding extracurriculars. I've taken only a total of 3 AP Classes, and I haven't gotten a C -- only As and mostly Bs. Hope this helps!
i so wish i could go to ucsb. it looks like such a great college, school wise and location wise. i live all the way in florida, so that obviously wont happen 😂
I was a UCSB student from 89-93 in electrical and computer engineering and I relate to what she is saying.. But, and this is a big but, the partying wrecked me. Dorm life was the best, but once I left I got involved with heavier and heavier and heavier people and the town made that seem normal. Every one of them is dead (mostly OD's but one shootout with the police), and I'm still standing. Walk carefully kids.
Is there any way to ensure you get roommates you like? Do you recommend picking roommates from Facebook rather than the filling out forms type of thing?
I think I want to go to UCSB and if isla vista is cheap, but I still want the roommate experience what should I do. Like could I do the roommates in the housing there and like split the mortgage or whatever? Or should I just live on the on campus dorms?
also i'm admitted as an english major as well but i'm thinking about switching to philosophy or maybe double majoring in both do you have any tips on college major stuff like choosing majors minors double majors researches and all that? thxxxx and ur rly pretty too! lowkey jealous of ur hair lolll it's like perfect for hair products commercials
is it possible to get admitted into the freshman dorm and opt out to live in isla vista after you met your roommates? (just in case they aren’t really kind and respectful)
Thanks for all the inside info! I’m attending UCSB this year so any info helps. maybe I’ll see you around campus? Hopefully you’re not too cool to hangout w a freshie lol
hey vianna!! so i'll be attending ucsb in the fall and i was wondering if you or anyone you know did the freshman summer start program? i'm considering it but i wanna get more perspectives on doing the program
no, tuition is somewhere around $14k and dorms are also around the same price depending on your plan. Altogether they make a cumulative sticker price of ~$30k (assuming you are not getting any financial aid).
Thank you! And well it usually goes along the lines of "my roommate does't let me make noise in the morning/ my roommate uses my things" but never to a point where someone had to move out (hopefully). Good luck with yours! :)
oh okay cause sometimes i read horror stories online, and they're sayin things like "my roommate had an or*y in the living room" but i wasn't really expecting stuff like that in college lmao
oh haha well actually maybe! It depends on the person & lots of ppl try new things in college. But I'm sure if you guys settle in on an agreement beforehand everything will be fine :)
This girl does not know what she talking about. No adults live in Isla Vista!?! SMH.. it town of families and there is even an Old Folks home there. She needs to open her eyes. And many of the so called Adults that own all those business live there as well. Some people where born and raised there.
I think about this a lot! At the beginning/middle of my freshman year the school really brought me down. A lot had to do with the election and how I thought the school wasn't proactive enough in enforcing diversity etc. Towards the end I started opening up to new possibilities & said yes to every event I was invited to etc & that really helped! Now I live in IV & as happy as ever!! :)
yeah unfortunately since we're such at a great location (we are literally next to the beach!) the cheapest rent you can get around Isla Vista for a double would be 500 if you're lucky. Right now I'm paying $700 for a double and I live in a great location! Hopefully you can rely on some financial aid if available though! Good luck :)

I got accepted into UCSB, but I’m still wondering if I should go here or not /:, the campus is so beautiful omg

Whats the absolute worst thing you can experience at UCSB? Some of the best?
I will be transferring this fall but I am still deciding between Davis or SB.

* girls would only talk to me so long as it involved me helping them on homework
* iv is full of homeless people
* bikes are way overpriced in iv, buy them online
* statistics, mathematics, and programming get more painful as you get deeper into it. pick an easy major
