  • Nestled in rural central Virginia is the small, but historic town of Orange. Although filled with historic places, its real place in America is the town closest to the home of President James Madison, the father of the US Constitution. For this year’s Constitution Day (September 17 each year) we visit the small town where the Constitution was essentially born.

Small towns, old fashioned architecture and minimal traffic, always give a cozy feel. Thanks for the info and great video.

+chiefamylee Most of the country is full of small towns rather than big cities, so even though most population is in cities, by shear area small towns, I believe, are most representative of what fills America. So we try to show both to the extent possible. This small town is special to me because of its relevance to our Constitution. I am really glad you enjoyed this episode!! Paul

7:20 Neighborhood I grew up in. Something about Orange that just feels right, that you don't realise you're missing untill you're in a big city... For one driving there is way less stressful, and every time you go out you're likely to see people you know.

+Firdaus Idros Thank you! It is so difficult to try and cover a whole town in one short video that I never am sure if I have included all of the right stuff. I also found the court house a fascinating building. This is such a really pleasant little town. Thanks again, and it's great hearing from you! Paul

+Eusepio1957 Hey Ettore! Thanks! This is a very neat little town. This was filmed on a Sunday, so people were out and about enjoying their weekend. We did love the beautiful homes and yards. It has that very peaceful small-town feel about it. We plan to get back there in the near future. Thanks again, and greetings from USA! Paul

+kimi kimster Hey Kimi! Yes there are plenty of kids around. We passed the elementary, middle and high schools while we were there. It is similar in some respects to the town I grew up in. The difference being that there is a lot of colonial American history with Orange. I am really glad to enjoyed this one. It was actually a fun episode to make. I really like this town! Thanks, Paul

In honor of the marriage (March 25, 1734) of Prince William IV (House of Orange, Netherlands) to Royal Princess Anne (House of Hanover, England) that the principality/county of Orange was decreed into existence on August 8, 1734. For close to 5 years, it was the largest of England's holdings in Colonial America. 1739, Orange was chopped up to make territories and other counties. In 1749, the Village of Orange was made the new courthouse location when a chunk of land was carved out to create Culpeper County. Population is just shy of 5,000 (2020). The Town is on the National Register of Historic Places. For a great virtual tour of the historic district: jamesmadison.oncell.com/en/index.html
INCLUDED IN Orange County (1734 into 1739): Kentucky, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, about 1/2 of Virginia (Split north to south), a chunk of Western Pennsylvania, and 1/2 of Michigan and 1/2 of Wisconsin. MADISON and Z. TAYLOR 2nd cousins, sharing great grandparents; Col. James I and Martha T. Taylor of Bloomsbury (behind regional airport). Taylor was born in Orange.
Wish you could have fit the museum into your visit - perhaps next time you're in the area?

Museums in general are notoriously recalcitrant about letting anyone video, so I typically avoid them anymore. Experience has taught me that the process of getting permission(s) is usually more horrific than it's worth.

I am not american, i am Portuguese from these little islands called the Azores Archipelago. I live on the biggest island and the biggest city/town (which has roughly around 69,000 hab). Its considered a small demographic. I used to want to get out of here and go to our country's capital and such, until i visited and felt horrible. Don't get me wrong, it was amazing seeing different shops and stores we dont have here, but to be unable to smell the nature/ocean, the always chaotic environment , thousnads and thousands of people in malls and such, the traffic, i didnt like it as a place to actually live.
I love my town and my island because it is calm, relaxing, empty beaches, parks, trails and such. We even have secret spots we dont tell tourists , so we can enjoy them for ourselves.
Anyways, i have always been infactuated with the USA, and one of the things i would love, would be to step aside from main cities, and actually visit these small towns. I feel like they bring the best and most natural/historic of the country. :)
