However, it adds another dimension to the problem: the increased costs and delays to commercial shipping and the consequent disruptions to global supply chains. No easy answers for this or any President.
For a much more in-depth discussion of the shipping side, I HIGHLY recommend the "What's Going On with Shipping" channel. It's hosted by Sal Mercogliano, a ship captain and former merchant Marine. He does daily updates just like Suh Brief. It's one of my favorite news channels, and he does an excellent job.

H.I. Sutton released a video today. In it, he suggests that the Houthis are not using anti-ship missiles, but are direecting the ships to stop and then attacing them with missiles that do not have sensors but just fly to a fixed target.
An earlier video explained that these ballistic missiles are doing exactly the same kind of ballistic calculations that naval gun-armed warships used to do through WW2. Given a known target position, course, and speed you can use an artillery cannon, or a missile in this case, to shoot at the place you expect that ship to be in 30-60 seconds (for a cannon) or several minutes (for a missile) from the time of firing. While cannons at their maximum range would have dispersions that could be a few thousand yards across (leaving lots of room to miss a target), even primitive ballistic missiles can use an internal navigation system to land within a few hundred yards of the target point even at ranges of many dozens to a few hundred miles. So there isn't even a need to call on the ships to halt, the calculus for the firing solution is pretty straightforward and the ships obviously don't want to waste fuel changing course or deviating from their ideal cruising speed.
My guess is that they’re using these first due to low cost and will then rotate to proper ASSM/ASBM systems when the ships refuse to stop or find some other counter.

@@jammyscouser2583the Houthi aren’t just going after Israeli linked ships anymore, they seem to be targeting ships indiscriminately. In fact, they have already targeted ships with “Chinese” links-by that I mean the links are with Hong Kong. I doubt the Houthi will intentionally attack Chinese shipping, but this is still going to cause huge delays in the Asia-Europe trade route, of which China plays a major part.
China PLANN has a naval base in Djibouti next door to our naval base. They are staying out of this food fight even though China is directly impacted by the reduction of commercial ships carrying Chinese exports to the EU. But, they are getting an eyeful from the beach watching our destroyers. This rock throwing by Yemen has had more negative shipping effects than it should. 🇺🇸⚓️
Well it isn't costing China any money, it is just costing the US more money. China abuses its "developing country" status, abusing the USPS's subsidies costing us in a lot of US taxpayer dollars. That's why things from sites like Temu have shipping that costs next to nothing.
Once again these are not warcrimes - acts of war yes but attacking merchant shipping in itself of any military value is not a warcrime.

11:15 The LCS has different mission packages. The one most pertinent for Yemen would be anti-surface warfare module. This module includes in addition to its 57 mm gun and RAM anti-air missile system, are two MK 44 MOD 2 30mm Automatic Cannon, two or one MH-60 helicopters with two MK299 MOD 2 launchers with 8 Hellfire missiles and MQ-8 Fire Scout UAVs, the millimeter wave radar-guided AGM-114L Hellfire missile on some LCS class ships designed for saturation surface attack defense, and the Naval Strike Missile, in two quad missile launchers on some LCS ships.

The latest research that I've done on the LCS mission modules is that they plan to equip all 3 of them (at least on the Freedom LCS ) with a compact version of the MK-41 VLS. My guess is that they would quad pack ESSM's which would give them a total of 96 ESSM's. Which is a substantial improvement over the current shitty MK44 guns and measly 8 Hellfires.

I am disappointed that our Australian Navy did not send a ship. I fear it is probably because we do not currently have the missile inventory to be able to meet that request to provide a ship.
The world is watching how the U.S respond to it. At the same time, what countries want to spend their defense bill on protecting the water way when they let U.S do it. Only reason why Japan want to respond is because their ship been involved.
Other things occupying the RAN, like China.
It does raise questions about our reliance on expensive missiles against inexpensive drones. Perhaps the return of guns to take out drones would be a cheaper option.

I'm not sure the F35 would add much when attacking an enemy that has minimal air defence capability. Its sensors might be useful for finding launch sites though.
Norwegian Skjold class, would fit quite well in there, with their exceptional high speed. Just thinking about it, a 48 meter heavily armed warship, coming after you at 60+ knots, and if that ship see cruise missile in the air, it will just paint it for any other warships in the area.
I find it too bad that even though the LCS was designed for this the odds of them making it across the ocean without being taken piggyback on something else since we lose more ships to attrition then we would to combat

I don't think Egypt has much leverage - the Houthi's are strongly linked to Iran (infact I think this might all be a way of Iran saving face from not having had Hamas attack). Egypts navy itself is pretty limited.

Some corrections sm2 and sea sparrow cost 2.1m and 1.7m respectively thats a massive cost disparity to those 20k drones.
We probably have an ESB ship somewhere close by the AO to help with coordination and resupply of our forces (in fact Anti Piracy and Maritime Security Operations were what the ESBs of the Lewis B puller class were designed for
Ironic that LCS has a fight they are designed for, after many of these ships have been forced to retire due to not living up to unrealistic expectations. Now on the tempo that these type of operations will be required, they will require many LCS to be have there crew reinforced beyond the crew they were design to support.

@@kendrosstragopulos3642 That was an issue related to the trimaran-hulled Independence class LCS rather than the Freedom classes based in Florida with closer reach to the Middle East. One such ship, the Indianapolis is already in the region testing a trio of USVs.
Have to say that this would be a good fight for a standard frigate (OHP or a similar replacement)
@@tomriley5790 This is why with the Constellation Class Frigate is being procured right now, we have realized that the "High-Low" scheme of the navy is better than the current. It is unfortunate that the LCS didn't work at as it was a rather good idea, but I feel new FFG's will be better.
@@kendrosstragopulos3642 yes one of the two versions of this class suffered from design flaws. Also both versions of the them suffered in that the ability to change out equipment sets wasn't an 48 hour turn around as claimed, more like two weeks to several months depending on what changes had to be made for outgoing module to accept the incoming module. There were too many new concepts in launching of both Class of LCS ships. Untested visions of what these ships were supposedly being built for. Leaving the Navy to realize that Frigates were the real jack of all trades, and master of none. Asking too much for newest type of ship in the Navy, LCS have their place, but in a more limited role than they were expected to carry out.
Would the ESSM or the rolling airframe be more cost effective? The SM-2/3 is definitely more capable, but wouldn’t the sea sparrow or ram be “effective enough” to knock a drone out?
As a deep seaman, since 1956, I have served on three national merchant ships as a bosun and an engine room motorman on British, Australian, and Norwegian ships. Also, as a Mate on a fishing trawler in New Guinea. And a survey coxswain and piloting launches in Dover Harbour, UK, before retirement in Britain in 2003 for most of my life. I know more than most seamen how vital the world's international oceans are to international commerce. It is past time Islam realized how important Yemen, Iran, and the rest of the Islamic terrorists know they cannot terrorize the world as they are. There will always be dire consequences if they try. With insurance companies starting to compel shipping companies to avoid the Red Sea, I am surprised (shocked) that Egypt is doing more because of the decline in shipping through (decline in revenues from) the Suez Canal. Egypt will pay a massive price (in a loss of Suez Canal fees) because of the Red Sea attacks, Egypt should be pressured to intervene.

Mounting some kind of counter offensive is what we should be doing otherwise what is the off ramp in this situation? we can't let them keep trying to attack a trade route indefinitely, intercepting the attacks is just damage control and if they escalate in theory they will be able to out pace our mounting of defensives given how remote the deployment of assets is, supply of munitions and fuel is just 1 short coming to worry about.

Great job drawing the connection between the need for the LCS and the consequences of the boondoggle of fraud, waste, and abuse of the program which has harmed the mission effectiveness of the US Navy. Not that other ships can't cover the gap, but the LCS was envisioned for this exact mission and is just so hopeless due to mismanagement and incompetent leadership choices.

As a former FC who worked on three different surface to air systems your analysis is on point. Shooting down drones and cheap ballistic missiles with SM2’s is not a long term solution but sending in the Marines and the CSG is.
Another question is where is Iran able to provide these supplies and can we cut them off?

Send in the marines and we’ll be stuck fighting another war for far too long. Moreover, Biden made a point during his campaign to denounce KSA/UAE’s war in Yemen, called MBS a “murderer” etc. then acted on that by limiting support for the coalition in their fight against the Houthis. Furthermore, we can kiss goodbye to our base in Djibouti as the Houthis would strike it with their ballistic missiles. It’s pretty clear that direct intervention is a bad bet all around, and that we’re best off waiting it out. Escalation would amount to a loss for us both militarily and politically. Just my 2¢

Special forces have order about 100 of these with final delivery by 2026.. Besides the military equipment all parts are off the shelf. Been in service in one form or another 30 years. Would make a great little drone hunter . adaptable with various pods

It is my opinion that shooting the missiles is and always will be ineffective. Deleting the launcher is the only solution. Cost of interceptor vs cost of target compared to cost of missile vs cost of launcher battery makes much more sense and actually prevents the attack in the first place
Before it starts, the OPG is already falling apart. Ships except some Russian oil tankers are diverted to go around Africa avoiding the Red Sea. No shipping company wants to risk of higher insurance premiums, lost, or damage of ships, cargoes, and crew by going through Bab-el-Mandeb.

Not really they'd already anounced this before the ships were put in place, but anyway these ships are flagged in Panama/Martial Islands etc. so there's actually no obligation to defend them.
This is another spot to keep allies occupied, stretch their forces and burden their military industrial complex. So they get less occupied with Ukraine.
What the navy should do is put a couple of ships in there for defense that operate laser weapons. That would be a good test to see their effectiveness, and it would save them a hell of a lot of money.

This reminds me as a Taiwanese of my own country- back when escorting ships around Somalia was the headline, our navy considered partaking as well in order to build our international reputation and give our navy operational experience on the high seas. But because we only had one underway replenishment vessel, which was undergoing refit at the time, the proposal went nowhere. Now we have two and can spare one of them at any given time to support blue water operations, and there is a new stage for our navy to hone their craft, but it would appear we no longer have the will......
Maybe remotely piloted drones used for Combat Air Patrols could be a small and less expensive way to counter cheap drones and cruise missiles. They may not work against ballistic missiles though.

@@hughmungus2760 Yeah, guns. The drones are slow and are being shot down with machine guns and cannon in Ukraine more cost effectively than missiles, although raming a drone with another drone might also be cost effective as has also been done in Ukraine.

Right now only stunt drone pilots can reliably nail another drone in mid air with their own drone. They're very such pilots and they can only handle one drone at a time.
The US also need a way to mass produce drones that are advanced enough to track and engage other drones but cheap enough where they can be expended 1:1 ramming other drones out of the air.
So far given that even the US commercial sector can't manage this I feel its a bridge too far for the US defense contractors which have a terrible tendency to make costs explode.

Lot of respect for Yemen's principle stand. They are taking practical steps to pressure Israel and world to do ceasefire in Gaza and stop genocide. Yemen has declared only the ships to and from Israel will be targeted. They have declared calm in Gaza means calm in red sea.

Unrelated question, but the Independence class LCS can carry 8 Naval Strike Missiles or 24 Tomahawks. Can one carry both weapons at the same time?
I believe you are confusing the Tomahawk with the Hellfire. Most Independence class LCS can’t carry Tomahawks because they don’t have the larger Mk 41 VLS for them. They do however have a smaller VLS capable of carrying 24 Hellfires. The one exception to this is the USS Savannah (LCS-28) which tested the new Mk 70 PDS which is basically a portable/modular set of Mk 41 VLS in September. However, the Naval Strike Missile is mounted in two sets of 4 canisters in between the bridge and the small VLS currently on the Independence class so it is possible to have 24 Hellfires and 8 Naval Strike Missiles on a single LCS. One interesting thing to note is the MK 70 PDS doesn’t need to actually connect to the ship itself so they can just park it on the flight deck in the same way that they have done with HIMARS in the past. This means it is likely possible to have a single LCS with 24 Hellfires, 8 Naval Strike Missiles, and 4+ Tomahawks (depending on how many Mk 70’s they park on deck) in addition to their normal 57mm gun, 11 RIM-116’s, and 2 30mm Bushmasters. If the Mk 70’s don’t take up too much of the deck space they can also host 1 or 2 UH-60’s which can also each carry 8 Hellfires.

What about sea mines? A low tier player can control a pinch point pretty easily with cheap mines.
Most of the Red Sea is too deep for bottom moored mines. I suppose they could just float some out there and see what happens.

The thing is that the SM2 enables one destroyer to sit and cover a large area (due to its range). Engaging with ESSM would obviously be cheaper and better.
I'd suggest actually that actually developing a naval version of NASAMs to replace ESSM would be a good idea - using AIM-120s which would enable the US Navy to simplify its inventory and make use of aging out AIM120s essenitally making shooting down the drones free.
Incidentally given their links to Iran I would not be certain that the Houthi's do not have air defence above manpad level not that I think it's anything taht the US airforce/US Navy cannot handle. I have not been impressed with the RSAF's performance in Yemen.
What's the betting on where the Vinson group is going? The Gulf of Aden is the obvious choice, but I'm wondering if she'll actually go to somewhere around the Gulf of Oman, ready if the Iranians try anything in support of the Houthis. Assuming Wikipedia is correct (a dangerous assumption, I know), Eisenhower is only carrying F-18s, while Vinson has a squadron of F-35s. F-18s should be able to handle whatever the Houthis have, but the F-35s would be handy if Iran gets adventurous, and from a position in the Gulf of Oman a Carrier group could still be off the coast of Yemen in a day or so if necessary.

The houthis do somewhat punch above their weight class unfortunately when it comes to land combat . They have done surprisingly well against Saudi Arabia land forces even when Saudi's were equipped with Abrams tanks .
