- Kazan is in transit in the North Atlantic today south of Bermuda heading towards Cuba (June 10th, 2024). She is a Modernized Yasen class submarine. This is a general overview of Project 855. We are about to learn much, much more during her current deployment.
The guided missile submarine Severodvinsk renamed Yasen, now Yasen-M (Project 885M) is a series of advanced nuclear-powered guided missile submarines (SSGN) of the Russian Navy. These submarines represent a significant evolution in design and capability over their predecessors. Here are the key technical details:
Length: Approximately 130 meters (427 feet)
Beam: Approximately 13 meters (42.7 feet)
Displacement: Around 13,800 tons (submerged)
Type: Nuclear-powered
Reactor: OK-650V nuclear reactor
Propulsion System: One shaft with a pump-jet propulsor
Speed: Up to 35 knots (submerged)
Vertical launch system (VLS) for up to 32 Kalibr or Oniks cruise missiles
Capability to launch Tsirkon hypersonic missiles
Torpedo tubes (533 mm)
Capability to launch various torpedoes and anti-ship missiles
Sonar: Irtysh-Amphora sonar suite, including spherical bow sonar array
Combat System: Omnibus-5 combat management system
Electronic Warfare: Advanced electronic countermeasures and decoy systems
Automation: High degree of automation, reducing crew size
Stealth: Enhanced stealth features, including anechoic coating and quiet propulsion system. Unlimited range with nuclear propulsion, with endurance limited only by crew and provisions.
The Yasen-M submarines are designed to perform a wide range of missions, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), strike missions against land targets, and intelligence gathering. Their advanced weaponry and stealth capabilities make them a formidable component of the Russian Navy's strategic assets.

2024 Update: Two more Yasen class submarines have been commissioned into the Pacific Fleet for a total of 4 active in the Russian Navy.
As many astute and long time members have noticed, this was first published on Patreon in 2020-21(ish). This is just the setup for my next video discussing the Russian Navy visit to Havana Cuba this week. That video will be out later this week.
I noticed this when your discussed when it will be commissioned.. has this sub been deployed into the Atlantic yet or is it still restricted to the Bering Sea?
This sub has deployed multiple time to the Atlantic and even to the Mediterranean.
I give ALL ALL ALL the Glory to the Lord Jesus Christ Who is God and His Holy Ghost 🙌🏿 ✝️ 🧎🏽
@@andrewscott8892 I believe Hull 1 has been out of the Barents Sea as of 2024.
@@SubBriefit’s pronounced “nucular” 🙃
I saw a Yasen transiting the Great Belt strait. Couldn't believe my luck.
Were you there when it the Yasser left for the first time?
I remember how those assigned on russia were excited about trying to track the sub on its first time passing into the Atlantic.
Onyx also has land attack capabilities, it has been used multiple times in Ukraine
the sonar guy always nail his episodes. freeking love this guy
SubBreif another excellent presentation, I love that your channel exists. Objective OSINT analysis of submarine warfare is a difficult concept due to more limited information sharing than the other disciplines and less kinetic combat use, but having a sub veteran (yourself) and a professional presentation and demeanor is just a gem. I especially appreciate this further in the contemporary days of more and more people trying to do the whole "OSINT analysis" thing (I actually researched and published a video myself on a different channel, so I have a seat, albeit a small one, at the table), and I wish more channels would follow your no-click bait, professional, presentation.
I'm always happy when i see a notification from Sub Brief. 🥰💪💪
No caterpillar drive? No hard-nosed Russian captain with an inexplicably heavy Scottish brogue?
NO DEAL comrades
Was wondering the same, unless Marko Ramius is in command, I’m out.
The caterpillar drive is still classified 😇
Estonian
That’s classic!
still does Crazy Ivans
9:27 - indeed; especially, that P-800 Oniks has export version - Brahmos - widely used and I think without issues in India in various forms.
The Yasens and Virginias have to be the best looking subs ever made
It's the USS Seawolf for me. Even the ole long dong USS Jimmy Carter looks good. 😅

Astute!
And the Suffren
Yeah Astute for me they look like the future like the f22 does for jets

My favorite modern submarine. Thanks for the brief!
Bro,your knowledge about Submarines is amazing. Respect.
I’ve always thought the history behind Russian subs is fascinating.

Kazan (K-561) is supposedly in Cuba.
Fascinating as always.
She is a great boat.
happy monday guys , thanks for vid
This is very informative and catchy narration to easy understand. Nice , nice.
Nice presentation.😎👍🏻
Thank you 👍
Great way to start a Monday, too bad I have to work 😂
It ought to be possible for the USA to have better relations with Russia. This conquest of Ukraine business should have been deterred.
Thanks Chief, these are very nice boats imho.⚓
The US said the the original 885 finally went into Atlantic was so quiet they could not track it at all.
Hoo boy, an oldy but a goody from your library, from way before the 2022 invasion. Would be interesting to see how many are in use on time! Good idea for an update.
Another great brief.
Although poor Archangelsk suffered from a typo. ;)
Thanks, Aaron.
Thank you !!!
This didn't age well. Kazan is on her way to Cuba right now. There are articles written
I'll be looking for your comment on Thursday's video.
@@SubBrief OOh, looking forward to THAT! Thanks for the heads up!
@@SubBriefI will be looking forward to the sonar man tracking her to tell us what spices the cook put in the crew's food during her transit.😁
Or is that classified?🤔
Call me crazy, but I doubt Russia needs anything more than modernized 971 - built with good tolerances and modern electronics.
Bless our Vets 🇺🇸. TY! How do you get all this info? Russians using Google?
I wonder if the Kaliber misdile was test fired from the sub while the boat was docked as a safety measure, having readily available emergency equipment and personnel in case of a major malfunction.
With two less tubes you could probably carry 6-8 extra torpedoes as reloads, and still have some additional tonnage free.
This was great! Thanks a lot. I just wish we could hear more about the reactor design, though that's probably super secret. I guess we just have to assume it's a PWR?
it is a PWR, yes
Is this an old brief
@15:12- By performing a test-firing of a missile from the pier they demonstrated that their strategic weapons were viable, even though the platform was non-operational.
That's important for Russia, as they have a great deal of trouble getting their ships and boats out to sea and keeping them there for long periods of time.
The recent port-call to Cuba was simply Kabuki Theater that was more of a boon to COMSUBLANT than the Russian Navy...... Or the brothels in Havana..........
a submarine displacing in excess of 12,000 ton could do with a 10-cell VLS instead of just 4-cells . . . those water scoops must be having large in-built desalination filters . . . recommend a video on possible large displacement variants of the A26L class & Type 212 class of fast attack submarines . . . wonder what's powering the rescue pod, thrusting it upwards to sea level from 600 . . .
A26 and 212 are not fast attacks and nothing I powering the rescue pod up, its positively buoyant
I really miss the sub briefs

Submarines are dope
I understand that recently you have been doing comparison videos. I futher understand that you specialise in the US navy however, is there a chance in the future we could see comparison videos concerning European naval assets and other world navies for example how the type 45 measures up with other air defence destroyers from around the world? Thanks
Hi Aron
I was wondering if you were going to share noise stats for this boat as there is an interview with and active duty navy admiral stating that they are allegedly very quiet boats.
Also, isn't it strange that they are building high end SSNs with 7 bladed screws and not pump jets when they are also building the SSBNs with pump jets at the same time?
They are very quiet indeed
Oh happy days, a new Sub Brief! Thx Cap Jive! 🫡 🔱
It's not called a kaliber missile,,,,,Its pronounced ,,,,kaleebrea,,,,And it also has a land attack function ,,Its been used in Ukraine many times,,,These kalibre missiles are almost hypersonic speed,,,,,The kinzal hypersonic missile is based on the kalibre design,,,The Ukrainian minister of the armed forces has stated in an interview that in all the time the patriot system was in Ukraine ,,They never once were able to shoot down a kalibre missile,,Or any supersonic missile the Russians fired ,,,,,I believe this interview is on line ,,
Maybe I'm dumb, but how do you fit 90 guys into that rescue pod? 20 long straws in a set of 90?
Cram em.
I bet the P-8s out of Jacksonville are going to get some good training. Not to mention the Seahawks out of Palm Beach, the Coast Guard out of Key West, and probably some F-18s out of Key West. Not to mention the sound range out at Androes Island.
The waters around that area are shallow and often with great visibility. They might even get to track it with Mk 1 eyeballs. I work just south of Patrick Space Force Base and we see Pave Hawks all the time. When I worked in Palm Beach I saw Sea Hawks all the time.
good luck spotting a yasen submarine those subs are extremely difficult to trace
Have the coasters stay away. They are just a national embarrassment by pretending they are a military.
I like that Russian boats have torpedo loading hatches, meanwhile we load it in what seems like the most complicated way possible
Seems like the Russians are giving you a chance to get updated information on the 08851M
There is a massive airshow near fort knox in louisville ky called thunder every year to open the derby festival.
Did you say she was THICC?
22:08 this is an extremely nerdy and probably nothing preponderance, but I'm wondering if there's any meaning behind the Russian standards and the Navy flags' potitons seeming random as to port/stbd in these four images
Flag Russia, naval flag, city name flag, manufacturing flags
Not “Yasen”, but “Yasin” (“Ясень”).
You are one cool cat. Been dere
It would make sense to not deploy them even if they are capable of being operational and don't have any problems. Why allow your adversary to collect data on them for no reason and I'm not that sure the Russians have the same interest in having an actively deployed navy compared to the US?UK etc. By the very nature of Anglo countries we're way more focused on the sea lanes where as Russia is primarily a continental power. I would be interested in hearing any opinions on why they should deploy them more at great expense.
Still waiting for modernized sub warfare using a mother ship with drones ala seaQuest DSV (before the weird time transport shark jump).
I know you try and its a silly thing to peck at, but your pronunciations lol Florida Man Speaks!
Man, you're really butchering those russian names. 😄😄
What kind of Russian sub is parked in Havana right now?
seems to be the Kazan (Yassen -M). it should be interesting; I hope we get another short video
USA choosing wrong enemy 😆
Is this a re-uploaded video? There's mention of delivery expected to be commissioned in 2020.
Also the Russian military was described as a formidable military. Seeing as how the black Sea fleet was destroyed by a country without a navy and the Russian ground forces are not looking so formidable right now either.
The reason you'd think this is due to your lack of understanding.
You don't really understand much. In future don't bother speaking about it in future.
You don't know anything 😊 be grateful I'm educating you
black sea is like a pool just like gulf of Mexico and if US had any ships there and fought Mexico the same fate would face US ships so stop behaving and reasoning like a baby, ukrainians aren't militias who US fights with, its an army with anti-ship capabilities

I presume that the US Navy isn't going to collect a lot of information on the Kazan as it is on its way to Cuba
If a nuclear submarine gets torpedoed, does it leak out all kinds of nuclear fuel in the ocean? Or is the reactor protected and contained inside a hardened shell? I was wondering if it would be an environmental and ecological disaster if a nuclear sub got shot down?
Depends on the hit. The Kosmolets went down because of a fire. The reactor was SCRAMmed well before that and it's being heavily monitored by local fisheries folks. So far, not any serious problems. My guess? depending on the level of automation on the Red boat, taking a catastrophic hit would probably cause a SCRAM as well. But a dead-on hit on the reactor space might give you that "Red Storm Rising" Victor.
Yet, the old people in Congress are forcing the US Navy to shrink their budget, and the sizes of the fleet 295 to 285! The kicker is there telling the Navy you better make more ships with less money. to counter the growing threat of red China and the Russian.
P.S "I love your weekly Navy briefing"!
Would like to see a video of you outlining what the Russian subs are involved with in the war in ukraine.
Not much to tell, bunch of Kilo subs go on patrols and/or launch land attack missiles (only improved Kilo). One got hit with missile while in drydock, possibly totaled, but unclear atm.
This must be an old presentation ,,,All these 088s are now in service,,,,
How old is this video?
Do russian submariners still do the crazy ivan
I wonder if the US got tape on the Kazan on her way to Cuba.
You can bet
Russians would be deliberately making lots of noise, no data there.
Have to wonder about the work around not being able to procure micro chips
Russia can get them from China easily , Military chips do not need to be as advanced as the chip in your laptop or Iphone which is between 7nm to 3nm . military chips are much more heftier and frankly cruder between 120nm to 25nm and basically any country with basic knowledge of semiconductors and talented engineers can make a chip between 25nm to 15nm . Russia wont have any issues acquiring chips .
Yas Queen, slay!
Oh honey look, a Tanky ! 📸😀
This sub specially M version is much quiter than Virginia SSN
Evidence?
@@diegorhoenisch62 even their Belgorod disappeared without any trace by NATO only for it to appear in their port 1 month later, Severodvinsk did the same some few years ago and even a US general admitted it
Yeah no. The Virginia class submarine is the first ever submarine to be TOO quiet as the boat is more quiet than the natural harmonics of the ocean around it.
The Yasen-M class can be equally as quiet. But it is physically impossible to be more quiet.
The future X sub is going to remarkably look like a Yazen; the Russians are obviously onto something with their design. The future X though will be a superior boat with the American know how and can do.
Interesting how Russia names its ships and submarines after cities. Were they emulating the U.S. or is this a long standing Russian naval tradition?
This has been going on in the ruski Navy for a very long time.
At the end of the day its a 40 yr old design & the build process was started 35 yrs ago, its not quite whats made out too be imo
For their crews’ sake, I hope the Subs are better maintained than the surface fleet
Old brief? Talks about new stuff as if 2020 is the future.
Almost 4 years old.
Over a decade of a lack of proper maintenance has most definitely made it louder. Go ahead and send it to Cuba for a war game. I have faith that our sonar guys will be able to track it down.
No proof of this claim obviously? U people don't believe in those eh?
If us military leadership had the same arrogance and stupidity as the msm brainwashed civilians,we would be in deep trouble
US Admiral said a few years ago this can also be looked up btw and i qoute "n October 2014, one of the U.S. Navy's top submarine officers, Rear Admiral Dave Johnson, the Naval Sea Systems Command's program executive officer (PEO) for submarines, said "We'll be facing tough potential opponents. One only has to look at the Severodvinsk, Russia's version of a nuclear guided missile submarine (SSGN). I am so impressed with this ship that I had Carderock build a model from unclassified data".["
According to 60 Minutes, unnamed Pentagon officials claimed that Severodvinsk on her maiden deployment "slipped into the Atlantic Ocean and for weeks evaded all of the attempts to find her" in the summer 2018. Thankfully the astute and vigilant men and women Officers from the US Naval Academy do not advance in their career by operating on assumptions of the enemy or opponent but on true and valid intelligence .
It's Kalibr.....
It's Russian. So the English spelling doesn't matter
This ship is 66 miles of the US coast thanks to Biden
Yes u need Trump
I doubt Biden is the one who issued the orders to send it to Cuba....
If only mankind wasn't insane. Instead of building 24 submarines that can destroy the world EACH......they could have built 24 Moon shuttles and start living the future.
If the Kazan is so badly made, why does the U.S. NAVY cannot find it in its backyard in the Caribbean? They've lost it! The Kazan is invisible to NATO's eyes. 😂
Yeah. They said that about the Yankee class too.
Whitey Mack and the Lapon proved otherwise.
16:30 That didn't age well.🙄
MAY BE its a good idea too stop throwing missles at russia ? PATIENCE ONLY LAST SO LONG.
So… the Russians still couldn’t lunch a submarine that supposedly an answer to a class of American submarine launched in late 70’s.
Objectively incorrect. Why speak when you're so wrong?
That's similar in asking why country's didn't have tanks fighting at the start of WW1.
..not Russia.. Soviet union..
24:32 slide might answer your question why she isnt leaving the Barents sea, the cyrilic in white says "на страже Заполярья" which means "guarding the Arctic".
They have arrived in cuba carrying dozens of hyoersonic missiles.
I guess the next move would be announcing a massive base to be built in cuba and the Russians helping with the economy. That would shaaatter Lindsay Graham and co😂
She's definitely been out in the Atlantic
Thanks for the upload, capt.
Navies are ahead of the curve, they've have had pronoun issues for centuries 😂
God Bless the Brave Russian Sailors!
One arrived in Cuba yesterday,,,But the USA news reported that they lost track of the sub for 24 hours and couldn't find it,,,,They said the sub was somewhere about 50 miles off the coast of Florida,,,
Considering its quieting is supposed ro be roughly on par with Seawolf, and the USN famously could never really track seawolf, thats quiet possible.
Severodvinsk project continuation authorized in 2004... I wonder if that was in reaction to the 2004 NATO expansion. Guessing so.
Greetings from germany! Next Sub typ 212A?😅
Und ich dachte, ich wäre der erste Deutsche hier. 😃😇
He already made a 212A sub brief
@@HolyNorthAmericanEmpire And also the 212CD
Perfect way to start the day!
Fire missiles from pierside? That's quite an impressive capability. The vessel is a fighting asset even if it's in maintenance. She's always a shooter unless the maintenance work involves actual launch systems. Seems like a very Russian thing to do.
If 8 doesn't get them, you're not gonna get them.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Damn! That's a lot of chances. Great episode, keep up the great work
The reduction in torpedo tubes I would guess, is most likely due to compressibility issues with having large aperture sonar arrays
