The #1 problem with college students is the inability to listen then make a reasonable argument. Most spend the entire time you are talking to them thinking of their response instead of listening then giving a valid rebuttable.
It's also part of shut-down conversation culture. Repeat a set of facts and talk over the other person when they present new information that may contradict your points. Crazy how she refused to listen. These debates are teaching me to be a better listener and work on being open with my lack of knowledge on a topic. Hubris is a killer.
This is a problem that exists within our society not just in the university. In order to understand any issue you have to be willing to listen, even if you hear things that you disagree. Pick your battles carefully.
