This video provides advice for Comeback Trumpet Players who are returning to the instrument after an extended break. It stresses the importance of practicing regularly, even if only for short periods each day, and following a balanced routine that works on all aspects of playing rather than trying to focus on just one problem area. The author recommends starting with breathing exercises and buzzing on the leadpipe, then moving on to long tones, flexibility studies, technical exercises, tonguing practice, and finally playing music. Recording yourself and listening back critically, as well as performing often even before you feel fully ready, are also suggested as ways to improve quickly. The key points are to be patient, focus on sound production and relaxed breathing, practice all facets of technique, and perform frequently in order to progress.
    Common Challenges for Returning Players
The author lists the main issues returning players face: poor sound, limited range, lack of endurance, slow fingers, and sloppy tonguing. But he cautions against fixating on just one of these areas.
The Importance of a Balanced Routine
A balanced daily practice routine covering all aspects of playing is recommended over trying to only improve one specific skill. Trumpet playing requires the whole body working in harmony.
    Components of a Good Routine
The article outlines a sample 30-minute balanced routine including breathing exercises, buzzing, long tones, flexibility studies, technique exercises, focused tonguing practice, and playing music.
Tips for Beginners Returning to the Trumpet
Complete beginners returning to the instrument after a long break should start with just 5 minutes of practice at a time and gradually build up endurance.
    Perform Early and Often
Performing frequently, even before you feel fully ready, will help accelerate your progress and give you valuable experience unachievable through practice alone.
    Action Items
Practice breathing exercises and buzzing on the leadpipe for 2-3 minutes daily this week.
Learn a flexibility study and practice it for 5 minutes daily.
Identify a technical study to practice 5 minutes daily.
Set aside 5 minutes each day this week just for focused tonguing practice.
Schedule a short informal performance to play for family/friends.

The best thing about this trumpet routine is that it grows with you. All players from beginner to pro work these things out. It's just what we do as trumpet players. What is your main challenge on the trumpet right now? Your routine is linked above.

I stopped playing after high school in 1972, picked up the horn after retiring in 2014. Could still read music (hard to see it though), and remembered fingering. Practiced for a year trying to get something back and realized I had no discipline. Joined a community band and asked the director if he knew anyone that gave trumpet lessons, hooked me up and honestly the best thing a come back player can do. Changed my trumpet playing immensely.

This is great. As someone who played trumpet all through school and took an extensive time off I’m 40 now and picking my horn up and playing again this is advice to point me in the right direction. I did not know how to practice to get my tone, endurance and range where it was in college.

Thank you, sir! Performance is key! Been sharing my audio files recorded by my phone with family members and friends of mine playing along with songs that I like. It keeps me motivated if I can't find an audience. 😊✨️🎺

Thanks Chris, that's really helpful, especially the encouragement to get out of the woodshed and playing with/for others, I've had 15+ years out, and the encouragement to be systematic and keep it daily even if brief is really helpful too.
Do you not especially encourage pedal tone practice? My old teacher used to encourage that a lot, though it did keep me somewhat anchored to the lower register I found, I prefer now to use pedals to get the lips moving freely and then work more from the mid register.

Great video, Chris. I'm considering joining the community band here, perhaps at the first of the new year. Not really my first choice of music (Jazz is my favorite), but I know it will be a good motivator for practice and improving.
