  • I've been playing the Monette 2000 LT trumpet since 2002. In this video I'll give you an extensive demo with sound examples in a variety of musical contexts.
All examples recorded on the AEA R84A ribbon microphone. No EQ on the newer clips, and I can't remember if the older clips have any EQ (if they do, it's minimal rolloff outside the trumpet's frequency range).

A Monette 900 cornet would suit your sound I think. Wynton played it on jelly lord and fiddlers tale (which I’m sure you know lol) good luck!

I've definitely had my eye on the 900 cornet. There's a video on Monette's FB page of the C version but it's only a minute long. Would love to hear more or even better, get a chance to play one. I get the impression that there are only a couple of them out in the wild.

Their sound is too muffled, lacking life for my taste, but many people like it

    I sold my 2022 p2 raja early 2023.
I had it for about a year.
I had a b2 -series mp as well as a lead version of that that covered my lead chops and a v cup series of that mp to cover mellow fluffy stuff.
Ultimately their customer service & how they treated me was my reason for selling.

If you're open to sharing, I'm curious what you mean by that. For me personally, I haven't had any reason to talk to the shop at all over the years other than recently to ask about C trumpets. I've found them to be hard to get ahold of but polite once I reach them.

As a multiinstrumentalist and composer myself, I really understand your problem. I was lucky enough to teach myself playing trumpet. So I never called the Bb being a C. Bb horns sound and play better than C trumpets. So just learn the name of the notes one more time. A Bb is a Bb and a C is a C and so on. Keep that lovely horn. Best greetings from Germany.

I like this idea in theory, but I really don't think I could pull it off at this stage.

How do you maintain your chops while performing on other instruments? The trumpet is a jealous type

I don’t! On the rare occasion that I say yes to a trumpet gig I have to drop the other instruments for the week leading up to it. Otherwise I’m only practicing 15-30 minutes a day and I don’t have real gig endurance.

Of course it all sounds great. But the sound is so unbelievably inflexible. It doesn't fit into any brass section.
Bach, Mozart, Beethoven??? All too difficult. Even for Webern or Berg??? Sure, Marsalis set the standard. But not everyone who plays Monette now sounded better than Wynton's unrivalled Bach!!! 🤫🤫🤫😉😉😉

I don't think I agree with that. Wynton's LCJO trumpet section has always been a mix of Monette and non-Monette trumpets and sounds wonderful. Or Ingrid Jensen playing Monette in Maria Schneider's band while the others don't. Also this recording of Herseth playing Mahler 5 on a Monette while section mates do not: ua-cam.com/video/InmENOL5zM8/v-deo.html

I’ve been thinking about C flugelhorn for years. I went so far as asking my repair guy if he could modify my Bb horn. That was a hard “no.” But at the time (this is 30 years ago) he said a C flugelhorn would be too bright. I didn’t really believe him but I let it go. Btw, I’m a multi-instrumentalist and work more on Piano and Bass too. I’m hoping for a video on what’s you find and hopefully demo.

I got a nice c trumpet to start out with and I'll post a video for sure, but it will be at least a month away. I'm not crazy about hot take/first impression videos, so I'll wait until I have some real experience with the thing.

You should discuss it with the members of Your band, check with their opinion in my opinion; Cool playing :)

A few makers like Divitt trumpets have developed 'hybrid' C models with Bb-like proportions and leadpipes. I don't think they are intended to 100% mimic the "smooth" Monette Bb sound but they'd be interesting to hear.

You were lucky to study with Greg Hopkins he has been with Berklee for years. He is one of the most underrated players around. That whole Berklee crew was/is amazing.

I am a big fan of your playing and style, I think the horn really blends well with you. It is also inspiring to see that you have stayed consistent with your playing and that horn has kept up with you. I think a lot of manufacturers could not say the same thing. I would love to see a video about the monette mouthpeices and maybe the C flugelhorn you talked about. New to this channel but already a big fan.

I play a Monette P1C trumpet with rock bands and it kills! I bought it used for $6k when I was trying to find a good C trumpet to go with my Yamaha NYS. Since the new Yamahas are over $5k, I didn't feel bad at all about paying that much. It's been amazing and I play it as often as I can.

Cool! Interesting reasoning for moving on. I've always thought it would be interesting to play a C trumpet in a jazzier setting, but so many of the C horns are made with the orchestral sound in mind. Definitely annoying to always be transposing back and forth if you play a lot of concert pitch instruments too. If Schilke could make the HC1 in a C tuning that would be VERY interesting.

    • @adamczerepinski
      @adamczerepinski  9 місяців тому +1

For sure - nearly all C trumpets are aimed at projecting over an orchestra with a bright sound.
