100% agree on your thoughts on the wedding industry! It's so over the top and extreme, but in a commercialized and generic way. It's really a shame.
Hi Michal, yes, you've really summed up my thoughts in your comment 😊 I hope people feel inclined to be more individualistic in their style soon 👒
I have to agree with Mr Hat about people not making the effort to dress for the occasion. This was very noticeable on a vlog I watched about a London high-end hotel preparing for reopened after lockdown. The staff spent days preparing for the event but when I looked at the clientele leaving it looked as if no one had made the effort to dress for the occasion. How sad when such a lovely venue called for it, and the staff themselves all looked impeccable.
You can put the banner rolled up in a thick cardboard tube. They are used to put posters through the mail also. The hats are so beautiful☺️🥰
Hello! Great idea! Thank you! I will try it next time 😊
@@ByIlonaMillinery I would also place the banner between a couple layers of tissue paper before rolling it. That may also help prevent creasing.
@@ByIlonaMillinery butchers paper works well as you roll it up to go inside the cardboard tube!
I was thinking that it would be rolled onto a tube, that is on the outside, and then wrapped.
Your personal sense of style is elegant and adorable.
Your talent is amazing and your hats are stunning. You have a long creative journey ahead. It's wonderful that you have a loving supportive husband.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience I particularly loved the conversation exchange in the car you two are so adorable and your Hats are so beautiful, I'm very excited about bringing back the vintage style Hats ❤🪡🧵👒🎩🧢
Hello, thank you so much! 😊 I am glad you enjoyed the video 👒
My British sister-in-law in the 1960s wore a had for her wedding in King Lynn to my brother. I borrowed it for my wedding in 1982. My niece wore it also for her wedding. Such a beautiful hat.
Wedding fairs tend to have mostly "lookie-loos". You may get some business later on from people who took your contact info & decide to place an order closer to the date of their event. The staging of your table was lovely, as were your designs.
Perhaps place two or three beautiful photos of brides wearing hats on your stand - people need to see the finished look as many would not be able to imagine how a hat would work as part of a wedding outfit. Certainly, the trouser suit should be included and what I've never seen in mainstream bridal salons is the bridal overcoat or cape - especially useful in colder climates. What better way to top off a gorgeous bridal coat or cape with a stylish hat?
Thank you very much for sharing your experience at the Ascot Wedding Fair. You two are such a lovely couple. 🤗
Hello Angeles, Thank you ❤️ I shall pass your lovely words over to Mr. Hat 🎩
Thank you for your lovely comment
Loved every minute of this video: thank you for allowing us to accompany you. What a lovely couple you make!! Although you felt a little disappointed at, what seemed like, a lack of interest in your gorgeous creations, I think the experience taught you a lot!! Onwards and upwards!!
You might want to try vintage fashion events. I don’t know if your hats would be vintage, but I would expect a large overlap of vintage and hat wearing people.
I wore a hat at my wedding, when years later my GF borrowed it for her wedding. I loved my hat.
I feel similarly about "the wedding industry" ugh.
We have Zipcar here on the university campus and it's so convenient! I haven't used it since before the pandemic, but I used to rent a car for an hour or two just to run errands that would be difficult for one person on the bus. So convenient.
It's so nice to see such a supportive partner..he's a gem ! Love your channel ( new subscriber) 😊
Hello Julie! Thank you so much! 😊
Hat choice often depends on hairstyle. Partner with a hair salon/stylist that specializes in weddings. Match hairstyle (up-do, low bun, French braiding, etc.) with hat style. Good Luck!
Loved it, thank you. These days brides seem to think more about the wedding than the marriage. That’s what’s important, your marriage. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Love the hat your wearing. It’s lovely 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺
Great insights by both of you. You are such a delightful couple. Can we please have a video on alternative hat choices for very short hair? 🙏🙏❤️👒🧢🎩
Although there was an investment of time and money, you learned a lot about the Weddings industry. And that your target audience are those who buyer who shop for unique hand crafted items. Plus, you planted seed by showing your creative hats to a community that might not have been ready to purchase but will remember you when they are ready. Think of it as planting lit hat 👒 seeds.
I love your hats and your channel. Very classy 💕
Thank you for taking us along & letting us meet Mr Hat! Just found your channel & its lovely. Here all we saw for years was the bandeau mermaid dress. Now its the lacy round neck, long sleeved, deep V back, skirted dress. All the same!
Your husband is correct
People have no respect for themselves or other people
you can prevent creasing in your banner by wrapping it around an empty fabric bolt or cardboard tube like you find in wrapping paper. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. i love all of your video's.
Your hats are fantastic. you should have more subscribers and be selling more in Great Britain. Your husband is correct; few people dress appropriately anymore, even to go to a wedding planning event. Also, most people dress the same rather than have their own style. All it takes is a bit more effort to come up with your own style, as you do. One reason I've heard for all of this now is that we now have too many choices in how and where we spend our money and time. People used to spend more money and time on a smaller more focused wardrobe, and in those days the quality of the fabric and construction was better.
Thank you for sharing your day, thoughts and process. A learning experience. I absolutely hate the term “wedding industry”, but it unfortunately describe the machine that it promotes. I wore a red linen dress off the high street and it was glorious.
Hello, your wedding looks sounds gorgeous! 💃
Hey Ilona, could you make a video on caps (baker boy or newsboy caps)? / how to create sliders for caps if they have no stiffened bodies? (I apologise if the terminology is incorrect! I'm German)
Hello! I shall put it on my list! ✅ But it may take me a while to get around to this. In the meantime, you might have some success if you google search for "sewing pattern for baker boy cap". Original vintage ones are the most successful. Happy sewing! 🧵👒
I am impressed that you put yourself "out there," and file your experience under "learning." I know how much hard work goes into such events, and the cost of the table can be stressful. I know from experience (I do other art and crafts work professionally, and I am learning millinery since you inspired me!) that very few people are prepared to do what you, with trusty Mr Hat, are doing.
I know your hard work ethic and willingness to learn will pay off in the end.
Loving the new hat! For some reason I thought of “Page Boy” half newsboy cap half of what I envisage a page boy wearing! As for the banner, take an empty role from wrapping paper, or one you mail posters in, and then wrap the banner around it and secure it with a pin… Do this right after steaming it and it will stay perfect! Lastly, maybe offer a consultation service for the MOB, etc. You can get in with a wedding planner AND/OR a wedding dress designer so you get the wedding party when they are purchasing dresses and picking colors.
I don’t understand why more brides don’t choose having their gown made by individual seamstresses instead of mass produced. For $3-5,000 you should be able to find a local seamstress and have a truly unique dress.
I live in Ascot just right behind the race course. Next time you visit us, I will make sure to visit you. I would buy at least one. I wore a pill box type hat on my wedding. That was 26 years ago. It was fabulous.
I totally agree with you on all of your comments. Both of you are absolutely right.
Its surprisingly to hear to hear that you don't need car. We can't live without a car. I love driving. Well done to zip car. I think its good. Hope you come again in Ascot. I love to meet and chat to both of you. Do you have a shop in London?
Hello! I'm not planning going to Ascot anytime soon, but I do have an online shop you can browse, I would love to make you a hat: www.byilona.co.uk/
For the hat; Andy/Andrea//Emily or even Hathaway. Its shape reminds me of one hats worn by Anne Hathaway in the Devill Wears Prada.
Could not agree more with your thoughts on the wedding industry, as a whole. I do feel the "cookie cutter" conveyor belt attitude to a very important day by many, many wedding-centric companies is pretty awful... But was left feeling a little, I don't know? Unsettled, perhaps, by comments made by both yourself & "Mr Hat" (fabulous nickname!) regarding the appearance of prospective clients & the level of effort put into their dress & over all appearance but perhaps I misunderstood your meaning? Wedding fairs aren't occasions, in that respect. I've helped out at a few over the years. They're, for want of a better term, reconnaissance and by far & away the strongest business done is in flyer/business card collection for possible future reference & collaborations between businesses & aren't really viewed as a huge part of the wedding build up in that respect. Be it a wedding fair at Ascot or a home improvement fair at a convention centre, the outcome is the same. Wedding parties will dress accordingly for brunch before spending the afternoon at a boutique for the bride to be to experiment with bridal designs & accessories, not for a wedding fair. As a trader, you are there all day, for the clientele they're not there long enough to make it a destination, once they've done a circuit of the stalls & found out what they wanted, they're done... In fact, a friend who once worked for a company in the industry told me the people who get the most from wedding fairs are the ones that organise/host them. They don't want wedding parties to spend a huge amount of time within the fair purely because they want the entrance fees. The less time folk spend within the fair the more paying customers they can get through the doors. I hope I've made sense!
Oh my goodness! That same exact thing here with wedding millinery here in the states! I have been a milliner for over 15 years and have NEVER had much success in the genre. All the advertising in the world cannot bring style and class to people who are not interested. I will say, everything you did was perfect and you both make a perfect team. I too have a “Mr. Hat” and he is irreplaceable. At the end of the day you can take away the lessons you have learned about what you do and don’t want to do and streamlining your set up. Well done. 😊
I’m impressed with your honesty. So often all the focus is on success, you’d think no-one in the world ever had a bad day. I used to do art/craft fairs and some were great and others… not. I had booked to do one in Kensington and it turned out to be the day of Princess Diana’s funeral and no-one came. Thank you for craftspeople solidarity! You’re a joy. And yes, everyone gets dressed every single day, so why not have fun with it?
I love hats … purchased all from Neiman Marcus… sadly I am not aware of any actual hat makers here in the US …
Beautiful videos, Thank you…
This should be classified as a very good learning event. Weddings do seem to be cookie-cutter events, especially in the US, although I have seen some where the bride actually dressed well for her shape and size.
I liked your wedding gown. It was simple and suited you.
I was married almost 45 years ago and had a very small budget. I made my dress from a pattern that I had used before which I changed slightly to meet the occasion. Also made the headpiece covered in the same fabric. It had an attached veil that I edged with lace and quite small pearl ornaments. Am still happy with how it turned out.
Getting your name out there using your sign and the flyers is a good way to advertise. You never know what will come of it.
For the wrinkle in your banner....roll it around an empty wrapping paper cardboard roll.
I just found your channel and am enjoying it greatly. I have been a hat wearer for over 60 years. I am impressed with your style and taste. Your designs are classical and will remain wearable for a long time. The tan hat that you took inspiration from your riding helmet, Audry Hepburn wore something similar in the 1960's. It was white and she wore it with a white suit. Thank you for all your hard work in bringing us these videos and for renewing my enthousiasm in wearing my own hat collection. My you continue to have success in your business.
Yes! The Audrey Hepburn hat! I’m sure I’ve seen her wear that style.
@@CareelBay Thank you, I thought that I might be the only one to remember her wearing that hat. Thanks again.
You popped up in my feed: you're delightful! In a former life, I studied Fashion Design from a Canadian designer, Richard Robinson, and have made three wedding hats/fascinator. Love your display. I think there is a place for you doing weddings but gear your marketing towards the casual bride, if you know what I mean.
These green tones in your scarf and hat match perfectly.
Beautiful Fliers. Signage always announces, so it pays to have one.
MrHats is correct. If people dressed to leave the house, they would engage in a completely different way. The people with wedding in two years will choose their outfit six weeks before the wedding. Seeing the outfit style with appropriate brim size hat, decisions are then. Unless all of the accessories match and the frock suit or outfit a different colour...it’s as though they can’t imagine.
Yes their true colours and style are worn to Bridal Expo functions.🤪 Time to make Satin Top hats for suit wearers and weddings.🎩👒👑
One lives and learns.... good idea to do a recce before booking a table the next time. Loving those jaunty pill boxes!
Hugs from Los Angeles! I’ll be in London in December-would love to see your hats!!!!
Wish todays fashion was less fast fashion but actual classy meaningful fashion!
Very interesting discussion. I really love the hat you’re wearing. It looks chic on you.💚
Interested in your subject & you have a lot of charm & personality & ability however often our time is limited & sitting thru the drive to Ascot or etc. cuts into available time to watch actual subject matter.
Lovely lady with a great personality! Is your name Hungarian by any chance?
At least doing the wedding fair enabled you to make this video. Thank you.
I've just done a quick google for vintage wedding fayre... there were/are some! Maybe that'd be a different route. Something to investigate perhaps.
Hello Emily, Thanks for the tip! I will look some up ❤️
I wore a hat at my wedding. I loved it. Bianca Jagger's wedding look has always been a favorite of mine.
And … so lovely to be part of your chat reflecting upon the day … you and Mr Hat a great couple!
What if you tried rolling up your name banner on a cardboard cylinder at least long enough and maybe a little longer than the width of it?
Use a foam pool noodle cut to length for banner storage. Use straight pins to hold in place.
totally agree with you on all the over the top wedding industry fads and 'must haves'. People wanting more and more frills to out do each other.
I LOVE the flyers! Very ‘you’!
Use a travel steamer to remove wrinkles.
Those brides are missing out.
Thanks for sharing your experiences - it’s so useful.
Thank you! I am glad you found it useful!
Love your look!
✨🧵
Cinderella for a day seems to be too much trouble to be well groomed. Men in high positions don't wear ties to finish their outfit off. This is the trend.
Birdy
Why are all your hats small? Why no bigger rims?
Thanks
Hello Beverly! Thank you so much for your support! 😊👒
I was a bride in a hat .. and so was my Mum lol
Oh dear! this video effort was a complete disappointment - your focus should have been on hats their special features and placement on the head with detailed close up shots- talking (actually mean complaining) heads in a car is amateur and obvious fill to pad out a clip. Avoid the complaints and distain and focus on your craft of which you are obviously talented.
That trouser suit was gorgeous! So much better than a frou frou dress.
Yes! I find the bridal trouser suits very chic 🎀
Brides dont wear hats
I do agree to the point with your comments on the wedding industry, but I do see a change happening (mostly on TikTok). Where people don't want the mainstream things anymore. And I hope that sticks and we see all kinds of wedding hats in the future!
Hello, yes, I do hope the younger generations change the wedding industry for the better by demanding different and unique products and services. That would make the world more visually exciting 🎉😊
