When I was a young, poor Airman's wife I wore a lot of vintage picked up at the Officer's Wives' Thrift Store. 50s beaded sweaters, genuine silk Japanese silk kimonos ,cashmere sweaters, Icelandic wool jackets, Italian leather shoes, etc. All bought for mere dollars. Wish I had them now.

oh man, oh man, are you right about the 1920s/1930s dilemma. 1920s fashion is my first love but the fact that such pieces are so rare and expensive drives my ever so unrealistic ambition to somehow become an expert seamstress, milliner, and cobbler. in the meantime, though, i think i'll try and pick up one of those 1800s inspired hats to turn into a 30s/40s hat! have you ever done a complete hat DIY? that would be super interesting to watch.
I have taken a few millinery classes and made some hats before, so I can certainly do a video tutorial in the future! I do have some old tutorials on my blog too if one simply cannot wait ;)
Thank you for this video. I have found patterns for 20’s cloche hats. I have been rewatching miss fisher while waiting for the movie. Her hats are cloche or beret style.
Love your video! I am a hat fanatic! About 2 years ago I was introduced to a hat shop in Eureka Springs, Arkansas called Hats, Hides And Heirlooms and I haven’t looked back. I don’t believe that I have left the house without a hat on since. As for people staring... I live in a small town in Arkansas and very rarely go out without getting at least one compliment. Just today, in a restaurant, I had a young man waiter make a special stop at our table to tell me how fabulous my hat was. I have found some very unique hats at antique stores. I have also made the mistake of buying a soiled one and thinking I could clean it. That has never worked out! My collection consists of about 70 hats. Maybe 10 or so are vintage. The others are vintage dupes or more modern (whatever that means) styles. I would add more but I don’t have any more room!
I love vintage fascinators, I'm not very good with hats but I adore fascinators, all of the feathers, beads, flowers and netting. They finish off a good hair up do that you're wear to a function or even just out to coffee!
Bought my wife three very refined straw panamas. They are not fedoras but simply hats made of 'paja toquilla.' And, as someone whose collected panamas for men, I immediately knew they would be classified as 'superfino.' I bought them at an estate sale of an eccentric working artist in one of the tonier sections of LA. There were so many hats. I wanted to buy all the straws. I just reblocked two by hand. Paja Toquilla of this grade is so fun and easy to work with. It's like butter.
People who think wearing a hat is strange are wrong. I love my hats. Top hat, bowler hat, Australian bush man's hat, woolly bob hat, straw boater, butcher boy hat, cloche hat and all the rest. People comment but I do not care. Like you say, a hat helps to balance an outfit.
Fascinating video. I didn't realise you were wearing a hat till you took it off. Thank you for the beret tutorial. I've always wanted to wear one, but could never get it to look right on me. My own favourite hat is a little brown bowler-style hat that my mum bought me 30+ years ago. It's the only one I feel suits me. You look wonderful in all yours, I think it's down to your confidence and stylishness.
I swear I had a 1920's hat in my dress up/play clothes when I was little. It was the same shape and style in orange. :)... Living for your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you! We should all hold a moment of silence for all of the amazing vintage that ended up in a play clothes box or high school theater closet over the years ha! ;)
Recently I discovered your channel. You have such a beautiful, classy look. Your style is amazing. My daughter's did the Fifties look for a number of years. Circle skirts, pin curls, sweater sets etc. I've collected vintage pieces over the years and love to wear something unique. I've worn an early 1950's grey suit that was my mum's, to work and it sure got the office talking. Thankfully all positive! You go girl! 😽👍💙
Just Wonderful. I'm a guy who collects womens vintage designer hats. No I don't wear them, just enjoy their beauty and workmanship. Hattie Carnegie and Lilly Dache are personal favorites. Thx again...so enjoyable. John V.
I appreciate your speaking skills. You're well spoken and that is a great skill to have to hold your audience's attention. I appreciate your fervor and interest in classic fashion. Thank you!!!
Awesome!!!! Totally enjoyed your presentation and humor 😀 I have a nice collection of vintage hats. One in particular a soft formed bloomingdales black ostrich hat w a black bow. It's so amazing!
I love your videos, love your attitude. Confidence is the key to being able to wear whatever we desire. Throw out the rules and have fun, isn't that what fashion is for?! Thank you
Gahhh! You weren't the only person who had that hat on their watch list for ages!!!!! I will console my self with the thought that it want to a loving home (but I still regret not grabbing it before someone else did *pointed glare* ) but I went into mourning when it disappeared - it just so lovely, (but you are too so I'll have to forgive you!).
Brilliant. love love love. when I took my sewing classes over 12 years ago, here in the UK, my wonderful teacher taught us to sew over the pins as the norm.
I love your dress clips! After watching you talk about those, I was able to inform a UA-camr who found ONLY ONE in a box of old jewelry. She listed it as a pendent or enhancer. I referred her to your channel, since you are the only person I have ever heard speak about them. Love the video as usual.
I am someone who is really wanting to get into vintage fashion, and I just adore your channel!!! You talk about so many specific topics that I have been trying to find more information on that I don’t see anyone else really talking about. Keep up the good work, you are so inspiring and informative!! ❤️
Having a English grannie lol ladies where allowed to wear their hats it was part of being a lady... my gran said she was glad when she got home and could take the "Bugger OFF" he he...
For some reason, I'm fine with being looked at, but I can't seem to stop myself from feeling overdressed! Which is really annoying because I love hats!
I think I must have trained myself young by wearing entirely too elaborate ensembles to school back in my high school days, so I have always been overdressed, and therefore for me it feels quite natural now ;)
@@TheClosetHistorian I guess my years dressed as a goth punk rocker did not really prepare me for feeling over dressed, if anything I was always under dressed. It's a hard bridge to gap. 😊
Great video!!! Vintage hats are my favorite thing! I pretty much have a few new ones every month. I am fortunate to work at a shop that gets them in from time to time.
Love all the info! Maybe do a Doris Day inspired lookbook for end of summer featuring the crates you made (ala "It Happened To Jane") and the floral hat with a pencil skirt, blouse, and pearls! Maybe you could do the Lookbook as a "day to evening in the 1960s" so you only have to do 3 or 4 outfits (morning with a house coat or robe, day with a casual working look, afternoon running errands, and an evening look for a late night date!
TheClosetHistorian A couple of favorites are Pillow Talk and That Touch of Mink. Fashion is wonderful. Romance on the High Seas is also good. Ugh...there are so many
I love wearing my vintage hats in public! Usually get some positive compliments on my whole outfits. Haven't tried wearing it out in the US yet, just here in the UK or at automotive theme events.
I recently went to a funeral. As we entered the church my husband said “take your hat off.” I did not remove my hat, somewhere in the back of my mind I remembered my mother telling me when I was a child that men should remove their hats inside a church whereas the etiquette for women is to leave your hat in place.
This is a lovely video! Here in Louisville hats are still considered cool in the spring, thanks to the Kentucky Derby, I always try on hats during that time of year, but I can never justify the purchase.
Invariably when I wear one of my many hats someone comments how nice it looks and that they wish they could wear hats. I always tell them anyone can look nice in the right hat!
Love your hats!! I only have two hats (one is manufactured by Sears Millinery and the other shows a union along with the union number) but plan to start looking for them in antique/ vintage stores.
I love hats too, and my main style is 40's and 50s. Hats are not common in Australia ( other than sun hats and caps) so I also get a lot of looks, but l. DON'T. CARE . I'm used to it now. I loved this video and l covet some of your hats!
I actually have a good suggestion for 1920s-1930s hats for people who sew. Elsewhenmillinery on etsy sell sewing patterns for hats in that shape. They look absolutely gorgeous. I've been waiting for fall to grab one personally because of where I live, but if you live in a cooler place I could see getting a lot of wear out of these
I love berets. I have many different colored ones. Lately, I found a few hats that I absolutely had to have. I display mine because out of site is out of mind for me. I do use a slightly damp cloth or soft brush to get dust off and it works well enough for me. I'm going to try the compressed air, such a time saver.
I'll admit I used to keep an image file on my computer that was a visual reminder of all of my hats so that I could pull it up and see which one would work for an outfit before I went digging for it, unfortunately I lost this reference image in a hard drive crash, so I really need to make a new one! Helpful when the collection gets perhaps a little *ahem* "too" large to keep track of... ;)
Thanks for the tip on how to use a hat pin; I've been using them incorrectly. LOL, you are so correct that once you have a hat on, people notice you. The 1940s and '50s are my favorite decades for hats and fashion. Although, there's a 1967 David Frost interview of Joan Crawford on UA-cam, and she's wearing a pink print high turban with the tie in the back. I hope to have a copy of the hat made.
Thanks for showing how to keep my hat. I am allergic to a sun my Physician suggest to wear a big hat.. Now I learn it is not only for fashion but for heaLTH.
Thanks for the very lovely chat about the history of hats. It was very entertaining and some very interesting information. My favorite was that rainbow striped silk hat. That was so cute. And thanks for the mini tutorial on how to pin on a hat. I've always wondered about that. And now I know. Good stuff! I have always loved a beret - - I can sport those with no problem. I never thought of those as vintage. Now I have a desire to sport a dramatic hat to an event with panache and great style on day. ( Yeah, that's right, unapologetically garner all the attention. Like Alexis Carrington in one of those dazzling creations she use to wear. Or like Aretha Franklin at Obama's inauguration)... styling dreams...
Loved this video!!! Just happened upon it and loved every minute!! I wear hats all of the time. My husband does too. Our nickname in our group is "The Lid Kids"! I particularly like hats with some veiling, wide brimmed, some elongated and feminine bowler hats. In the Winter I wear wool and in the summer I wear wide brimmed straw with a SPF of 50. I think I have every color under the sun for summer hats. My husband wears fedoras and caps. My Mother and both Grandmothers wore hats all of the time and that is wear I got my love of hats. Have worn them since I was 3/4 years old. I don't care if I get stared at and most of the time I get compliments. Thank you so much for doing this video. It was alot of fun for me to listen to someone else who loves hats!!!
Thank you for doing research on this ! very helpful! I always wonder about hats as I am just getting into them and feel like wide brimmed hats should not be worn inside.. . I have a 20's style cloche hat with a grey body and black ribbon band with a 4"brim I just picked up . love ! ps. lavender sachets keep the moths away
I am an avid collector and I have been friends with a milliner. She made some gorgeous hats for me over the years. She recommended that I store my hats in Reynolds baking bags. Then I place them in a hatbox. Dust just doesnt stick to those bags and moths hate them.
I have 3 pairs of gloves, following in your "Matchy Matchy" tradition. I have green and black leather ones and burgundy fabric ones. I have shoes to match all three colours and I am working on getting belts to match. I also have burgundy black and tortoishell reading and sun glasses and have a faux croc, black leather and faux green croc handbags (I do have others these are just my vintage style, or actual vintage pieces. Matching gets really OCD very quickly lol. I have however, taken up making hats and am working on matching these too! If it bothers people,(stained hat bands) its easy enough to replace it with a length of millinary petersham or grosgrain.
You can get a rechargeable air duster that works like the canned air but it is battery powered and chargers with usb c charger. Lovely to not risk the aerosol propellant getting on what you are cleaning. Also good for dusting knick knacks
If you’re ever in Salt Lake City, check out Decades. It has an insane variety of hats in good condition. I don’t know how but it’s awesome. I bought my hat for my wedding there.
So look forward to your videos doll! You look ravishing btw!!X I agree, that despite not having the right 'head shape' or 'body' for hats or clothing that ye olden days subscribed to, folks should be able to bloomin' well wear what they desire!!! Xx
Your beautiful shallow crown black straw hat is very much like the bergere style hat that one found also in the 18th century. I recently purchased one (a copy of course!) for reenactment purposes and quickly realising I can also double it up for 40s style, bonus!
I’m really big on reusing materials (I run a company based on the principle). In the world of textile artistry, it’s so easy to reuse materials. Sheets at Arc are a great reuse product imo, given that a king size set is ~13yds of cotton for $3. I have a massive bias against synthetic fibers, although I see the validity in reusing them as well. I suppose one could argue that it’s even more important to reuse a polyester than it is to reuse a cotton or wool (I still hate polyester, though lol). I’ve recently gotten into hat construction, which inevitably leads one down a vintage-inspired road. Given that I just started learning the process, my results are no where near what I would consider worthy of charging someone’s hard-earned money, but it’s been fun so far. I actually went to a Denver junkyard, U Pull & Pay, in search of wire for brim construction. They mainly sell car parts, but I was able to find enough wire for at least 10 large hats, & the owner only charged me $1. It would’ve been much easier to just get some at Home Depot, but the reuse factor is integral to my business model & personal ideology, so I didn’t mind the hassle too much. I also tried melting plastic (at low temp to avoid burning, & this fumes) I dug out of a recycling dumpster by my house (🤣), & shaping it into tubes to use for hats & boning. There are so many opportunities to reuse materials, one’s imagination is basically the limit! The trouble is that it’s often easier, & therefore cheaper, to just make things like boning or wire from scratch. One must have an ideological motivation to make it a reality, & I’ve found that mostly people just don’t gaf. We all like to talk the talk, but it’s much more difficult to walk the walk. What I love about those who admire vintage style is that they often are also not swayed by convenience, which makes reuse of materials more applicable. Anyways, I’ll step off my soap box now lol.
I've got a modern version of a 30s cloche without the cut away back and every time I slouch it hits my shoulders and I jump out if my skin, but its so pretty it gets worn anyway. I've also got a wool beret that my dog slobbered all over, haven't yet got the courage to wash it in case it shrinks. Love seeing your hat collection, maybe I'll have to invest in some more hat pins
Very interesting! How funny that I never thought about how hat pins worked, I'd assumed incorrectly that your hair underneath had a bun or roll to stick it ito.
I saw a programme with a lovely stylish older lady who was talking about hats she wore in the 30' and 40's and she said the way out styles were because hats were one of the few things NOT rationed - so you could really make a statement with your head wear. She didn't know why they weren't rationed, just grateful the ladies had something to dress up with.
I think it may have depended on US versus UK rationing systems which hats/hat materials were rationed, I can imagine perhaps wool hats being rarer because wool would be needed for war work versus some other materials like straw maybe. I have never done much research into rationing but I'm sure it would be quite interesting!
Strikingly beautiful as always. Love a red lip. Hat are so much fun I wear large brim straw hats in the summer because I'm ghostly white with a dash of pink, so I don't burn. Now that I'm in Kansas, I get to wear all kinds of hats to stay warm in the winter. I have a pink hat from the forties that was mom's. I also have a mesh silver evening bag. Let's talk ok? I also think the dress clips are the best. Smashing.
My Nonna wore a flowery hat the same shape as that last one for her wedding, it was all white, and she wore a tailored dress and jacket combo, in (I think) a kind of French Navy. ( this was 1968) with other accessories in white. ( I think chunky heeled white court shoes/pumps) . I remember her sleeves being a bracelet length. I was lucky, both my Grandmothers were very elegant. The only hat etiquette I know about is that you keep your hat on at a wedding until the bride's Mum takes hers off. (sources - I'm a Brit, with Italian heritage and aspiring roots, lol)
Thank you so much for all your videos - this one is particularly helpful for me - as I am planning an outfit to wear to a VE/VJ day celebration fair and would like to go dressed suitably. Anyone dressed in appropriate end of WWII 40's attire gets a free cup of tea - so it is a must! I have been pondering what sort of hat to wear, as I think a hat would really allow me to look suitably dressed up for a garden party type event. I am still looking - and with a week to go I will need to find one soon. If only you could help me scour the charity shops of England! Best wishes from rainy London.
I. Magnin was indeed a San Francisco based high end/'luxury brand' department store (like Marshall Field, Neiman Marcus) which endured until the mid 1990s, named by its creator Mary Ann Magnin for her husband Isaac.
I am one that likes the thought, and looks, of hats.....but I never wear them....I had no idea how much info you had to share on this subject! I also had trouble seeing that hat on your head! How could one match so well with your hair?! LOL Looks great, though.
22:05 I'm late to the game here, but I feel like you could probably style that flower hat with an off-white 1930's crocheted dress, or even a sack dress. It would have a nice cottagecore vibe to it.
Your outfit 😍 Like a rich glamorous heiress, who just buried her third husband! Love it!

Thank you for this video. I have found patterns for 20’s cloche hats. I have been rewatching miss fisher while waiting for the movie. Her hats are cloche or beret style.
Thank you Renata! I love Miss Fisher's, such a good show!
Miss fisher and Crypt of tears comes out feb 2020. I have a modern cloche I am planning to renovate.
Thank you Vera! I am happy to hear from a fellow hat lover
I love vintage fascinators, I'm not very good with hats but I adore fascinators, all of the feathers, beads, flowers and netting. They finish off a good hair up do that you're wear to a function or even just out to coffee!
Great video. That black 40s felt hat is giving me such His Girl Friday vibes!
Lesley Rickman wow, yes! Although I think hers may have had a larger brim. Maybe? I’ll have to go back and watch again.
Thank you Lesley! I'm happy to channel Hildy Johnson anytime!
That floral hat is perfect for wearing in the spring with tea dresses and spring colored or small floral prints.
Thank you Pamela!
I just put my hats in the freezer when i get them to clean out any bugs or bacteria.
Thank you Liz! I love 1950's suits, well, most suits in general
The flower hat made on the wire frame was also made on a large pill box. They were worn in the spring and summertime with a suit mostly.
The hat illustration at 9:10 made my heart happy - all those beautiful colours. Just lovely ! 👒 + 🎩 = 🤗
Just Wonderful. I'm a guy who collects womens vintage designer hats. No I don't wear them, just enjoy their beauty and workmanship. Hattie Carnegie and Lilly Dache are personal favorites. Thx again...so enjoyable.
John V.
Thank you John! Both designers are worthwhile favorites for sure
Omg where do you find such hats?!
I appreciate your speaking skills. You're well spoken and that is a great skill to have to hold your audience's attention. I appreciate your fervor and interest in classic fashion. Thank you!!!
Thank you Janet!
I know this is two years old and about hats, but those dress clips make me drool!
Ahhh so sorry ;) I had to have it! Thank you!
Brilliant. love love love. when I took my sewing classes over 12 years ago, here in the UK, my wonderful teacher taught us to sew over the pins as the norm.
Thank you Sara!
I love your dress clips! After watching you talk about those, I was able to inform a UA-camr who found ONLY ONE in a box of old jewelry. She listed it as a pendent or enhancer. I referred her to your channel, since you are the only person I have ever heard speak about them. Love the video as usual.
Thank you Shirley!
Really enjoyed this video. I wish hats would come back into style.
Thank you!
I am someone who is really wanting to get into vintage fashion, and I just adore your channel!!! You talk about so many specific topics that I have been trying to find more information on that I don’t see anyone else really talking about. Keep up the good work, you are so inspiring and informative!! ❤️
Thank you Katie!
Loved the video, what a plethora of information! I think your makeup is on point and you look absolutely stunning!😊
Thank you Dona!
You're so elegant and well spoken it was really a pleasure watching your video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you Hailey!
Having a English grannie lol ladies where allowed to wear their hats it was part of being a lady... my gran said she was glad when she got home and could take the "Bugger OFF" he he...
That was very interesting... as with the fashions, you were made to wear those hats!
Thank you Rosi!
Do you! Dress nice! People dress like slobs now.
I really enjoy these informational type videos. I may not have any vintage styles hats, but boy do I love looking at them!
Thank you!
I love reading on the Vintage Dancer’s site. So much good information.
Great video!!! Vintage hats are my favorite thing! I pretty much have a few new ones every month. I am fortunate to work at a shop that gets them in from time to time.
Thank you! That is lucky! I went to a vintage shop this week where there was a whole little hat section in the back and it made my heart so happy
Thanks Katherine! I'm afraid I have never seen a Doris Day flick (for shame, I know) so I'll have to work on that first ;)
TheClosetHistorian A couple of favorites are Pillow Talk and That Touch of Mink. Fashion is wonderful. Romance on the High Seas is also good. Ugh...there are so many
I bought a beret a while back, and never had a clue how to wear it... I literally audibly went, 'Ohhhhhhhh!' When you showed the beret demonstration.
I binged watching your channel.I love it so much. 😊🤔🤨🤭🤭🤭👀❤️💗💖💕💄📿📺📹✂️📐📏🖇️📎📍📌🗄️🗃️📓📒📙📕📔
Thank you Ashley! I'm sure the races keep a couple of custom hatters in business!
Thank you Leslie! Good luck with the hat hunting!
I love hats too, and my main style is 40's and 50s. Hats are not common in Australia ( other than sun hats and caps) so I also get a lot of looks, but l. DON'T. CARE . I'm used to it now. I loved this video and l covet some of your hats!
Thank you Tina! Gotta have fun with hats I quite agree :)
I have short very thin hair so I wear hats that go down over my head. I envy ladies that can wear those lovely hats with a dramatic tilt!
You are correct that I. Magnin was in San Francisco - a quite posh department store on Union Square. I used to shop there in my youth.
So informative. Thank you so much💕
Thank you Valerie!
Another fascinating vlog.I could listen to you all day
Thank you Maureen!
Thank you Darnelle!
Thank you Peggy! Hats are the best it's true
Thank you, thank you! I just found an adorable cartwheel hat.
The best part of hats not being so common anymore is that most people wouldn't notice the mixing of decades. So have at it people
Very true indeed :)
I am an avid collector and I have been friends with a milliner. She made some gorgeous hats for me over the years. She recommended that I store my hats in Reynolds baking bags. Then I place them in a hatbox. Dust just doesnt stick to those bags and moths hate them.
Interesting! That is certainly something I have never heard of before. I do live in fear of those pesky months! ;)
9:31 I love the 1920s cloche and wear now more in winter ❄️ wear more 1940s styles dancing and pinup shows.
You can get a rechargeable air duster that works like the canned air but it is battery powered and chargers with usb c charger. Lovely to not risk the aerosol propellant getting on what you are cleaning. Also good for dusting knick knacks
You are so inspirational, and that it’s ok not to pigeon hole yourself in strictly dressing for your body type, but rather trusting your own judgment:
Thank you Rose!
Love vintage hats! Wearing the cloche style it feels so classic! Great video, has got me excited to play with mine more. 🌻✨ you look stunning 🙌🏻
Thank you Lisa!
Thank you so Much.
One of your BEST VIDEOS.
If you’re ever in Salt Lake City, check out Decades. It has an insane variety of hats in good condition. I don’t know how but it’s awesome. I bought my hat for my wedding there.
So look forward to your videos doll! You look ravishing btw!!X
I agree, that despite not having the right 'head shape' or 'body' for hats or clothing that ye olden days subscribed to, folks should be able to bloomin' well wear what they desire!!! Xx
Thank you Jo!
I loves hats👒🧤🧥l loves vintage gloves and coats as well thanks for showing I loves your channel.
Your beautiful shallow crown black straw hat is very much like the bergere style hat that one found also in the 18th century. I recently purchased one (a copy of course!) for reenactment purposes and quickly realising I can also double it up for 40s style, bonus!
Oh! You said just that later in the video !!! Haha! Well, hooray for doubling up styles with the same item!
Thank you! It is nice to pin a hat on over an updo or bun too, as the hairstyle is tight and is good for pinning into even this way too!
I'm so glad you showed up on my recommended list!
Well thank you! Me too then ;)
@@TheClosetHistorian I love it. :)
I finally got a vintage hat. It’s from the brand Dr. Joel. Idk really if it is true vintage but I love it
I saw a programme with a lovely stylish older lady who was talking about hats she wore in the 30' and 40's and she said the way out styles were because hats were one of the few things NOT rationed - so you could really make a statement with your head wear.
Smashing.
Thank you!
Your 60s Flower hat is one that Elizabeth Taylor would have worn.
You’re stunning. I love hats and you have such beautiful ones.
Thank you Luna!
Thank you! You have no idea how much I would indeed love to come and help in the search, London is my favorite city and I miss it terribly!
Thank you Sharon! It's because my hair is practically black right now, so all my black hats blend right in ;)
22:05 I'm late to the game here, but I feel like you could probably style that flower hat with an off-white 1930's crocheted dress, or even a sack dress. It would have a nice cottagecore vibe to it.
I just obtained a few older hats. I’m watching videos to figure out how to properly clean and take care of them.
