Synopsis - ‘Psychedelic Therapeutic Wonderland’ - Misconduct within psychedelic-assisted therapy
This panel will delve into the complexities of misconduct within the psychedelic assisted therapy sector, addressing the ethical standards expected of therapists working with psychedelics. Through exploring instances of misconduct, organizational responses, and media portrayal, the discussion aims to provide insight into these critical issues. Dr. Benjamin Sessa, a prominent psychiatrist renowned for his work in psychedelic therapy, is facing serious allegations of misconduct. Highlighting the importance of discussing ethical frameworks of this emerging field. Ben is well known in Australian undertaking several visits to represent his work and assist with his expertise to Australian companies and organisations.
Dr. Sessa has been featured widely in the media over the years as a pioneer of psychedelic assisted therapies. The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) whom also have had widespread media coverage of their groundbreaking work, attracted attention when Dr. Donna Dryer and Richard Yensen were found to have engaged an inappropriate relationship with one of their clients during Phase 2 clinical trials investigating the therapeutic efficacy of MDMA. The list goes on.
This panel is a collaborative endeavour from EGA & The PATCH

Fantastic and engaging panel on a subject not often covered. Challenging topic indeed but well worth spending the time viewing as there a lot to unpack and think about regarding the mainstream of psychedelic and therapeutic use. I got a lot out of this one. Thanks to everyone that made it possible ❤

Thanks for speaking out about those issues! Here in France I find the silence about it (from people up front on our tiny psychedelic stage) quite disturbing.

Make psychedelics counter cultural again!! Love what David says at 1:40:30. Psychedelics were meant to destroy the Sith not join them lol!
Anyway, shite Star Wars references aside it is remarkable reading a work like Acid Dreams and seeing, CIA seeding it into the counterculture aside, how radical and emancipatory and awesomely idealistic the politics that were associated with psychedelics were. It’s so stunted and sterile now comparatively with this whole respectability game that medicalisation at all cost as necessitates.

Yeah just having honest conversations about the very real potential for enhanced romantic transference in psychedelic therapy as Symon points out around 1:02:00 is crucial. MDMA for instance can cause sudden acute sexual arousal as can other psychedelics, it’s not outside of the realm of possible experiences so taking advantage of people is cursed behaviour and it really just needs to be held in utter contempt and clearly stated that it is so.

I know that there's a temptation to have a standardised model for psychedelic therapy but aren't we at the point where we now know that the therapy should be tailored to the patient?
One man's therapy might look like taking 5 grams of mushrooms in a forest. Someone else might want to go to a clinic and have therapists waiting by the bed.
Clear dialogue between the practitioner and client before the therapy and setting boundaries should also help. If I was a practitioner, I would let the client record the session on camera.

I believe this panel isn’t discussing or promoting a standardised model of therapy itself, but rather focusing on the aspect of conduct and boundaries in particular. That still leaves a lot of leeway for various and individualised treatments
