LYRICS
And a drop of Nelson’s blood wouldn’t do us any harm (3x)
And we’ll all hang on behind
CHORUS
And we’ll roll the old chariot along
We’ll roll the olden chariot along
We’ll roll the old chariot along
And we’ll all hang on behind
And a nice glass of whiskey wouldn’t do us any harm (3x)
And we’ll all hang on behind
CHORUS
If my father will go, he shall wear a starry crown (3x)
And we’ll all hang on behind
CHORUS (2x)

Interestingly, it was an African American soldier serving in the U.S. Army during WW2 that started what are now cadences in the military. And most cadences have a similar rhythm and purpose as chanties.
Hope you and Nicole join forces for more projects, greatly heartened by the success of this project.
It's been fun to work together, even at a distance!
YES!!!! THE YEAR OF THE SHANTY!!
Hahaha. Glad you like it!
Very well done. Excellent research knowledge conveyed in an efficient script
Thanks Rick. It's alot to condense, but I hope it serves as a good intro for folks new to the genre.
Love it!
Glad you like it! :) Feel free to subscribe :)
Just found your channel and love your work! Great singing too! Do you study music or history?
Saro was into shanties before they were cool!
I had heard at some point that "shanties" were the songs that were used to work the capstan, and that other work songs had different names. Do you know where that came from?
Hmm, good question Ethan! I am definitely not an expert on this particular genre. There were names for different kinds of songs depending on where they were performed on the ship or what function they were used for. But I haven't heard that the term "shanty" applied exclusively to capstan work. You might want to check out mudcat.org to post the question and see what other people know.
