  • This is a tool review of the DeWalt Mechanics Tool Set DWMT41019 from Costco vs Craftsman tool set. This is DeWalt Mechanics Tool Set vs Craftsman Tools: Best Deal Under $100. This 173 piece dewalt mechanic set was sitting on the shelves at Costco for months and not selling at $99.99.

    🛒 DEWALT DWST11556 Express Folding Workbench (Amazon): amzn.to/2qsaRdi
    Finally, Costco lowered the selling price to $79.99 then we picked up this fully loaded Dewalt socket set. This Dewalt ratchet set has all three ratchet sizes, 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", making this Dewalt mechanics tool set one of the best socket set tool deals out there. This Dewalt Costco toolset should drop in price further as we hope for continued DeWalt tool deals from Costco. Sometimes before the end of the year, they might put the Dewalt socket set on sale further, so watch the price to see if it goes lower.
    craftsman mechanics toolset
    Next, we review the craftsman versastack 216-piece mechanics tool socket set from craftsman tools. The Dewalt mechanic tools set is compared here to the CRAFTSMAN VERSASTACK 216-Piece Standard (SAE) and Metric Polished Chrome Mechanics Tool Set, which is Craftsman Tools model # CMMT99206, purchased for $99 on Black Friday, after a price drop from $149. This craftsman mechanics tools set is a Versastack system tool set so it is a 3-Drawer Mechanics Tool Set. this is one of the better craftsman tool deals we've seen at Lowe's home improvement hardware stores in a long time. This 3-drawer craftsman tool set also has all three ratchet sizes. The craftsman sockets are nicely polished as are the Craftsman ratchets that are found in this Craftsman socket set. This specific Craftsman mechanics toolset available at Lowe's Home Improvement stores.

      Drop them onto concrete instead of grass and try to make them both land on same spot, preferably a corner, typically weakest spot

    Jeff, thank you for your excellent review. I bought the Craftsman set for our garage. I thought parallel access to each drive size with removable drawers including drivers was the optimal organization design for a fixed setup.
    I had the same experience as you with binding on the bottom drawer. I was frustrated enough that I exchanged it at Lowe’s with the hope that perhaps the injection mold of my particular unit was maybe out of tolerance. The replacement unit had the exact same behavior. I even tried some silicone lubricant on the drawer lips to see if I could reduce the friction some but the wall lips were simply too tall, so it didn’t help with the friction much.
    I hemmed and hawed for 2 days whether I should return it. At the end of the day I chose to keep it, though, because of how good the design is. I looked at both the Dewalt and Husky alternatives but they were not nearly as well designed.
    I think I will try to fix the bottom drawer friction issue by sanding/grinding the lip height on the bottom drawer. I can come back and post whether it works; I’m betting it will. The downside will be I think the plastic may mush out instead of sand down. We’ll see.
    Thanks again for a fantastic review. You have a great channel!!!

      I was going to also suggest taking the metal aviation snips and just cutting of the very top edge of the 3rd drawer, that might open up a gap where they don't bind any longer. Grinding like you said is probably more accurate.

      Personally I think the biggest appeal is just taking the trays out and throwing them in a tool chest drawer. I’ve never had a case like that survive use and the elements without getting all gross and resulting in having to yank the drawer and try not to spill tools all over your garage floor. As a organizer that stays still inside another drawer though, that I could see working out. Good luck either way.

    Would like to add a few things about the craftsman set.
    1. The sides where the versastack clips are can hold more accessories hence the cut outs. Great when used on versastack system but if just alone most likely will fail your drop test.
    2. When used with versastack system the pull out draw system can be done with one hand, if just on table top may have to use two hands as you shown.
    3. It alone is heavy, but when used as versastack system which is on wheels it is easy transporting it at that point
    I personally feel craftsman the good choice considering the versastack system if it wasn’t for that I feel it’s a 50/50 choice
    Great video

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, and also we did another video later showing the Dewalt hack with this, where the dewalt drill kits in the ToughSystem+ line will clip onto the top of the versatack drill bit kit, and they will also plug onto the side of the 3 drawer mechanics tool set as well. Now we can carry 4 DeWalt accessory boxes, along with the Versastack accessory box clipped to the top holding 2 of them.

    Both are awesome sets for the $, no doubt! Although nothing worse on blow moulded cases than the no free space to put additional sockets, wrenches, or anything extra to make the set how you need it. Craftsman scores big with the extra free space in the box! DeWalt is awesome in that they do the most incredible thing...6 points sockets.! Craftsman loves sneaking 12 point sockets in every set. 12 points are great when you have 12pt bolts, but 90% of the time you need 6 point. As for both sets, the more deeps the better. I find i grab deeps and use them more often than anything. You can more often use a deep in place of a short, can't use a short in place of a deep. Would be incredible if a set included an extending 1/2". Whenever you need a 1/2" ratchet you will likely need more than 50ft.lbs. So why is it companies insist you tear up your hands for high torque on short 1/2" drives. That's when you have to resort to the big 1/2" socket and 1/2" extension cheater bar rig. As for durability...10 years from now the Craftsman versa set box will be trash with the plastic drawer clips, where as the blow mold Dewalt case will still be around all scrapped up from dragging it across the tailgate. Enjoyed the video. Thanks.

    Just picked the Crafsman set up over the weekend. Tools seem decent but I bought it to use with my other Versastack components. This case does not stack on top of the drawer units. Tried on several drawers but they wont lock down. A lip on the lower part of this box prevents it from sitting low enough to latch. Latches fine on a lidded box. Seems like a design miss or an odd choice to make some components only compatible in certain orientations.

    • @eawhit
      @eawhit 4 роки тому +1

      Seth Lightner I found that other Tstak or Versastack work fine ON TOP of it but not UNDER it.
      I think I read on the Lowe’s site a review from a user who is gonna expand the side cutouts for the patches to enable stacking underneath it.
      I haven’t fully committed to an organization system yet (have one Tstak 2 drawer box). I’ll probably wait to modify until I make that decision. If you do modify it, I’d love to hear if it worked and if you’ve got any advice. Thanks man!

    A disadvantage of these tool sets is the lack of space in the cases for my own tools. I have electrical tools (multimeter, etc), for example, that I'd like to keep with the other tools. Same with a few unique tools I've collected over the years. The sets are also limited - no pliers, cutters, adjustable wrenches, and so on.

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  2 роки тому +1

      I keep all of my electrical tools in their own DeWalt tool bag which I have done A to review video of a couple of years ago. There are so many tools including the meter and everything you're not going to fit into a mechanics toolset. It's a lot easier to have them in their own bag anyway as you move are

    On the Dewalt set the metric and SAE wrenches the internal portion of the 12 point , I noticed it was not polished but had a white coating and some brownish stain on one of the points. Was the the case for you as well? I bought mine from costco

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 роки тому +2

      Yes, mine wrenches also have that same change in texture on the inside of the box end of the wrenches. I suspect it might have something to do with their DirecTorque technology that they mention is supposed to give the 12 point wrench more power to turn stuck nut, by rounding off those 12 points so that more turning force is also applied to the sides of the nuts.

  • @Fee.1
    @Fee.1 4 роки тому

    Also I really liked the the black dewalt impact ready socket set. Nice double duty maybe 30 piece kit with the basics just all 3/8 sockets. Then I saw all the dewalt and Stanley etc. use the same handle moulding. I do prefer retention pin over friction ring but that’s a minor issue.
    Anyway yea I’d pay $50 more on Black Friday for more wrenches instead of bits, I get my bits in my impact bit sets for $25 don’t water down my mechanics sockets/wrench set.
    Also that direct torque silliness is new to me, fascinating to see them re-use everything. That’s just an impact socket (the teardrop corners) and that’s why they call it impact ready when they anodize them black I guess. Wild, but that’s life eh

    I was really looking forward to seeing the Craftsman 216 tool set. I currently have a stupid little Walmart brand hyper tough kit. It was $60 but it has a good little variety of stuff for a beginner like me, but even in the hyper tough kit, specific tools have their own specific spot where they can clip into place. I'm disappointed that Craftsman made that kit without regard for those who like to be extremely organized like me. It's gonna be a deal breaker for me.

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 роки тому

      I heard those Bosch hole saw kits are not that good because they are super thin walled, and you have to pull each one off the base and attach the new size ring, which sounds really flimsy, unlike the Holedozers, which are thick walled single piece hole saws. They might still get the job done, but I love my holedozers.

The daredevils aren’t bad, you’re infinitely better off with them than most budget offerings of a similar price. They’re not a carbide set but they’re not priced that way either. As that photo suggests I fear we may lose what in store Bosch selections we have. Home Depot has discontinued any Bosch product that contains a Impact/drill driver. I can’t help but be saddened when a actually unique offering resembling actual attempts to innovate & true competition is sidelined so that faux competition in the form of TTI’s 3 brands at Home Depot or Stanley b&d’s 4 brands at Lowe’s...it just becomes a game at that point

      I don't know what kit you ended up with, but my hunch is that for LONG threaded hangers and whatnot often used with L-iron brackets and such, you might do well grab one of those Harbor Freight "SAE & Metric Go-Thru Socket Set, 21 Pc." kits for about $20 or maybe some ratcheting combination wrench kit, since deep sockets alone may not do the trick and open ended wrenches alone on a few feet of threaded rod would get tedious quickly.

I shot my non-live stream videos all in 4K resolution, which is better than the HD resolution you might normally see in other videos. That lens you normally see me use with the sharp focused Jeff in the foreground, but buttery smooth blurry background does not happen by accident. It's a special prime focus 50 MM lens, but the real trick is that 1.8 f-stop that gives you that background boceh that make it look like professional documentary style.

    Just bought the Craftsman. I can say that I agree with your assessment of that middle drawer. I think if they had put bearings in the drawers it would be 1,000 times a better system. Also- there should be a better way to keep the wrenches organized. I like how everything is clearly labeled and easy to organize- I wish the wrenches were the same. Also the screwdriver bits. They should be labeled as well so you don’t have to play the guessing game on bit sizes. It would also have been nice to include a universal in the 1/2 inch drawer, but hey- for the price it’s a great piece of kit. Looking forward to using it (well... kind of 😂) and seeing how the rest of the versa stack system works with it.

      If you look at my otter tool review video comparing the DeWalt 173 piece mechanics set to the Craftsman 200 piece tool set, you'll see the DeWalt has no button either. Makes it a bit harder to tug the socket off, especially if your hands are the least bit greasy or wet. My guess is either they do it for reduced cost, or just ergonomics of the design some people prefer it, or the OEM manufacturer says that's the only way we build it.

      They do it to compare with brands like Snap On, Matco, Cornwell, etc. Its supposed to maintain a seal to prevent dirt and debris from getting into the mechanism therefor maintaining the life of the tool as well as holding the ratchets lubricant. While those brands also offer the push button, their standard line is the closed back design. I've used the prior mentioned brands daily for the last 4 years as a diesel mechanic and they've never seized or cracked on me. I can't say the same about the store brands with the button on the back.

    • @yarbrouc1

      Thanks for letting me know, I gotta upload a quick video about this, because this deal ends on 3/23. I was just in the store Wednesday and it was $99 in there.

      That will be sweet. It's still hard to find 12 point wrenches in the stores!

      Luis here is the link to it on Home Depot, homedepot.sjv.io/Qo9vo It's $88 right now, normally $99 in most of the stores, and at Black Friday they sometimes lower it to $70.

    That drop was not a fail lol

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  4 роки тому

      Yes it remained intact, but 2 of the wrenches did travel from one bin to the other, not that it makes a difference much when the wrenches just get piled up in the compartment anyway. But in technically speaking it failed the test because parts did travel, even though not in a disadvantageous manner like sockets flying out of place.

      jeffostroff considering how many pieces actually did travel though it is still pretty impressive, and i personally wouldn't consider it a fail. Now if almost a third of the drawer was discombobulated then I would say that is a fail. But just in straight terms of you testing to see if anything would shift at all, then yeah it failed

    I like the Craftsman 216 tool set because it's nice and compact it's like having your own toolbox with all your sockets in there and everything fits in place not like the others with a carrying case everything falls out

    Do you really need 3 different size ratchets? I use 3/8 for most everything

    • @jeffostroff
      @jeffostroff  3 роки тому

      Sometimes it boils down to size and torque. For hire to work and applications the half interaction it is a must. Some people also inherit extra sockets that could be from multiple sizes.

      Yes you do need all 3 especially when getting into tight areas under the hood. Or needing more torque, I've twisted the end off of 3/8 ratchets many times.
