#SlyAndTheFamilyStone was an American band from San Francisco. Active from 1966 to 1983, it was pivotal in the development of #funk, #soul, rock, and psychedelic music. Its core line-up was led by singer-songwriter, record producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone, and included Stone's brother and singer/guitarist Freddie Stone, sister and singer/keyboardist Rose Stone, trumpeter Cynthia Robinson, drummer Greg Errico, saxophonist Jerry Martini, and bassist Larry Graham. It was the first major American rock group to have a racially integrated, male and female lineup.
Formed in 1966, the group's music synthesized a variety of disparate musical genres to help pioneer the emerging "psychedelic soul" sound. They released a series of Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 hits such as "Dance to the Music" (1968), "Everyday People" (1968), and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" (1969), as well as critically acclaimed albums such as Stand! (1969), which combined pop sensibility with social commentary. In the 1970s, it transitioned into a darker and less commercial funk sound on releases such as There's a Riot Goin' On (1971) and Fresh (1973), proving as influential as their early work. By 1975, drug problems and interpersonal clashes led to dissolution, though Sly continued to record and tour with a new rotating lineup under the name "Sly and the Family Stone" until drug problems forced his effective retirement in 1987.
The work of Sly and the Family Stone greatly influenced the sound of subsequent American funk, pop, soul, R&B, and hip hop music. Music critic Joel Selvin wrote, "there are two types of black music: black music before Sly Stone, and black music after Sly Stone". In 2010, they were ranked 43rd in Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and three of their albums are included on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

    I had no TV until I was 4, 5 yr s old
I was gifted a record player at age 5 by my neighbor. A suitcase record player.
It was 1969 ish. My Dad played all genres of music all the time.
Music was our house. I wanted Sly and the Family Stone Music for Christmas.
He got me the Album. Fast Forward, Me age 15. Prince entered my Ear.
He I follow to this day even so he was taken from us. To know that Sly and the Family were his inspiration it all fits, it's not a puzzle, it's real. The amount of joy can't be measured, all I have is gratitude - I thank you.

In the Fall of 1967, I was a freshman at UC Berkeley. Sly was still living in his hometown, Vallejo, CA,. He had a Saturday afternoon radio show at the SF Bay Area station KDIA. I tuned in each Saturday. He released the single of Dance to the Music while he was working there. I was listening the very Saturday he announced his last show; due to the overwhelming success of Dance to the Music, he'd be going on tour. I was crushed that he wouldn't be doing the show, the very pinnacle of my Saturday afternoons, but thrilled for the band's success. So, I loved Sly Stone long before he blew up. I listened to every Sly Stone album I had every single day, and imagined the band playing those songs, L-I-V-E, with me in the audience straight grooving.

Why do people have to say how old they are or what race they are? White people around the world loved Sly Stone and he was especially received in his own country - Sly was like Jimi Hendrix but funky. If you were alive during the period Sly was famous, you should already know those facts.

I've not seen this before. Very hard to watch. A superstar addict in plain sight. So sad. I was in a band in the 70's we opened for Sly in San Jose,Ca. He was two hours late and could not play. Totally smashed and incoherent. Surprised he is still alive. As a recovering alcoholic. I know the dance. God Bless him and care for him. Incredible band.

I'm PROUD to say I saw Sly & The Family Stone in 1968 at the Miami High Lye Fron Ton .These Cats know how to Get Down, they have Funk , Rock , & mostly Soul like nobody's business. At that time in the music business nobody gave you this kind thrill. These guys delivered a show that is definitely impressed in my memory. Today if you were to go see a show like the one I saw in 1968 ...well let's just say that it would cost you a whole weeks pay. I believe it only cost me twenty bucks, BAMM that's what I'm talking about. Thank You Sly and the Family Stone for the big Dose of Funk & Soul in 1968. God bless you all. Peace to all everywhere.

As a complete music junkie for the past 60 plus years, I think that Sly & The Family Stone were one of the most unique bands around. They were one of a small handful with their own unique style and sound and it was all because of Sly Stones musical genius as a composer and arranger and master of the band.
It's great to see Sly still making music.

Not by anyone who knows what's what in the least they weren't. Jeff, I am 59 first time I jumped around like crazy was to "Music Lover" my parents were playing it in 1969. Last night my wife and my kids and I were jumping and dancing to it 53 years later (by the way it gets better with Sly and time) I think they are recognized as one of the greatest. Where I think they got slighted was their individual talent. Larry was acknowledged and of course, deserved it. Sly changed everything. But I feel Freddy played wonderfully smooth and Errico had beyond blue-eyed soul in his funky amazing playing. Cynth. and Jerry was like having 12 horns, especially when a trombone sat in with them. To me, it gets no better than this band from about 66-71, lot of great music in those years, and some changed things for the better Silvester Srewarts words and music changed everything and always for the better. We need to celebrate his genius more while we still have him here, wether he wants us to or not! Thanks for the love Family Stone.

Bands like Sly & Company sang about *UNITY.* Among races.. cultures, styles of existing. Listening to their concert and feel like you've left a good preaching service. *Good for the soul.* Sadly.. bands like this are things of the past. UNLESS--- someone steps up and decides to make it cool again. Wish they would. Black music of the 50's-60's & 70's.. I loved. Even prior.. of course, the Jazz players. I am at least glad to see Sly perform here. Last I saw Sly, he was living in a small trailer and could barely speak. Seems he has pulled himself up.. with lots of help. God Bless The Sly.
