I have a friend who brake rotors and pads put on her Chevolet at the dealer. The mechanics that apparently did the work, messed up. He or she left the cardboard boxes stating "GENUINE GM PARTS" in the rear seats. The boxes for the 2 rotors had MADE IN CHINA. The boxes for the pads had MADE IN INDIA. These genuine GM OEM PARTS probably came out of the same respective factories in China and India that make brake parts for Autozone, O'reilly, and all of the rest of the aftermarket parts houses. That is apparently legal. However, the dealer prices for these parts was very high. For that kind of money, they should have been made by Americans in Ohio or Michigan. That was disappointing.

I'm sorry but I take great exception to some of this. First of all most of the time I have needed to repair my, or other peoples, vehicles it needed to be right then as it was critical to have it up and going ASAP. I tend to usually buy at AutoZone as I have always had good experience with all their parts including backing up warranty on batteries. Rebuilt alternator and starters? Put them on my Explorer and drove it for another 100k miles with no problems. If it something that I can wait for and still drive the vehicle I will look on line to try and get a better deal. But most of the time it would be more expensive to not fix something immediately such as losing time at work etc....I have had A Triumph,
Dodge, Pontiac, 3 Hondas, Cadillac, 5 BMW's, and 2 Explorer sand an F250. to give you an idea where parts were needed. Been working on cars/trucks/tractors since I was 14. I'm 60 now. I just don't agree with all you say. And yes, we all have or own opinions and this was just mine.

There's a difference between rebuilt and remanufactured. Most auto parts stores sell REMAN parts which are next to new as you can get without paying exhorbadent prices . They have new components in them .Rebuilt usually means assembled with used parts .
REMAN parts get a bad rap .No they aren't brand new but when you are on a tight budget they suffice

Pretty accurate from my experience as well. You’re better off buying from FCP or ESC directly which is what I do. I have found that NAPA seems to have more knowledgeable workers on average if I have to go to a parts store for anything.

As a former employee of the big three chains they buy things in bulk and put thier part number on it but wait there's more and they mark it up at least 100% of what they bought it for and they don't care about the quality of parts they care about the money not you or the part

You are 100% correct about the chain auto parts stores. I needed a bmw blower resistor and went to autozone because it was close. The part they sold was around $100, made in China and literally looked identical to the $15 resistor available on ebay or amazon. I ended up ordering one made by the oem manufacturer in Germany for under $50 delivered.

Hell yeah, Nathan! Fix it for as cheaply as possible with the best parts for that price, couldn't agree more. Sadly a while back the bearing in the alternator of my Vette went out, and I didn't yet own the BMW. I needed the Vette fixed ASAP, so I had to buy a replacement from Auto Zone. The wanted my core for the original Alternator. I didn't give it to them. I said "if it's only the bearing, I'll keep it and rebuild it. Then when this POS China one breaks, I can swap it out immediately for my original and not be down waiting two days for another China alternator.

Sometimes I have to bite my lower lip when I hear some of these kids selling parts at parts stores spouting off at the mouth.
Gets real deep sometimes if you know what I mean.
Fix it right the first time and be done with it.
External bolt on stuff is one thing but internal critical parts are a different situation when they fail.

Nathan, you're very wise, and brave for sticking your neck out like this. Marketing departments' sole purpose is to convince the general public that their products are high grade and long lasting. It works, people believe it. You have the experience to know the difference because you have put in the time to test the products from the industry. Most people buy whatever pops up on their browser, because the marketing department knows how to prioritize their products. It's the oldest trick in the book.

ROCK AUTO! This past week I replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders on my '90 Isuzu SpaceCab 4x4 2.6L. Now, I could get a master cylinder at O'Reilly for $26. They also give me a military discount (as does Autozone, and Advance, etc). I looked on Rock Auto, and found the EXACT same part, but for $12. Yes, Chinese-made. I got the slave cylinder for $8! Made in Taiwan! I just ordered rear brake rotors for my truck, and I got them for $7 EACH, by Autopart International (manufacturer closeout, I check around the 'net and found them for $35 at places like AZ and OReilly). Wagner thermoquiet brake pads for the rear for like $14! If I MUST have it NOW, and O'Reilly or AZ has it, I buy locally. PLUS, AZ and O'Reilly give me $10 for used batteries (any lead acid battery). I get military discounts, and I get REBATES as well. I just bought 6 iridium plugs for my 2012 Genesis. I got them for about 48 dollars, less military discount, and I got a $15 rebate, which took the price down below $5 a plug. I could NOT find that deal anywhere else on the internet. Not even Rock Auto. So you have to be savvy auto parts shopper...look where they are made, look at price and quality. I buy a LOT of Beck-Arnley parts on RA as well. Last month I had to replace two instrument gauges on my 2004 Envoy XUV, so I went to eBay and got a gonga deal on gauges and soldering iron....so it pays to be smart.

For BMW, they have garbage sensors that dont work and are very expensive. Example: I needed a new MAF sensor for my 2003 X5 3.0 M54 motor.
They charged me $180 for a duralast MAF and also has a sticker.(BUILT IN MEXICO)...same problem as old one, but after the engine gets really good and warm..the idle gets rough and throws lean codes and misfires on all cylinders. No vacuum leaks, new plugs and coils, CCV delete, added a catch can. Runs beautiful, except hot idles. Pull the MAF..rough idle goes away.
I tried to return the MAF but you cant return anything you installed. How am I supposed to know if it works unless I run it? Well, after testing it with a code reader that shows live data...the kg/h is too high at idle reading....its telling the computer that more air is coming in than is actual. TOTAL BS!

I received a counterfeit Toyota HV water pump from a highly rated seller from Ebay recently, and it seems this problem is on the rise with online merchants like Ebay and Amazon. I'm all for saving a dollar or two, but for critical parts like timing components and water pumps, I prefer to use OEM genuine replacements or reputable brands like Aisin or Melling. I don't want to be worrying if my OEM replacement is a knockoff, and this seems to be a trend on Ebay. What clued me in to the pump mentioned above: The word "water" was spelled "watar" on the label of the OEM box. This prompted me to investigate further, and the pump was nearly identical to the original, except for four obvious differences: protective caps on both connections (Toyota doesn't use caps), Cheap Phillips head bracket bolts, a white letter "O" on top outlet, and red lettering at base of connecter. This is after I went online and paid a visit to several Toyota dealerships and pulled the part up and looked at the pictures of the pump from all angles. During my research, each dealership I went to had pics of the same part. Using the close up feature revealed the same identifiers that were present (with all dealerships) that are unique to Toyota's version. There are dozens and dozens of these cloned water pumps for sale - with the prices starting in the low 20's on up, and look as though they were churned out by the same factory. I returned the part. I eventually found a genuine pump using Amazon; the seller was a Toyota dealership who had a thriving online parts business. Paid a little more than half price, but was the real thing. The failure rate on Amazon for the cloned variety was unacceptable, and sometimes only lasted a few months, going by the ratings.

I did my apprenticeship at the main bmw dealer in Bristol, the 3rd biggest BMW dealer in the UK dick lovett and when we needed parts urgently for example on the M5 belonging to after sales director of the company we used to get the overnight delivery from eBay and the parts were made in Japan all the time, we had a very good record of quality and durability especially the oil pump, water pump and power steering pump, no failure at all to my memory and I can't say that about oem parts I'm afraid. This is a director's car that was always picking up bmw executives from the airport and it was a demonstrator for potential customers who wanted to drive the V10. You have to have faith in the ability of the products for this role. I think some people who comment about this situation should actually try and lift a wrench in the real world where you don't have a week to wait for parts to be delivered at 3 times the cost of what is available in a few hours. If you still want to insist on being right, then please by all means take it up with the senior management of BMW because they are the people you are arguing with.
Mark B, senior service department area manager for Dick Lovett BMW. (the guy who lectures on the way to work with the customer and the car of all the new and used BMW owners that bought from the dealer in the UK and Northern Europe between 2008 and 2014) thankyou

Sometimes You can score a Timken wheel bearing in a Duralast box or whatever, but you're gonna overpay anyway. ML320 cam sensor, $160 at orileys for china part, $30 on amazon for bosch part ($13 if you buy the one someone returned). I did find the Valeo e36 alternator there reman for $160, but the first one I got whined like a supercharger and had to be exchanged.

I agree, I use to on my Ford Taurus's at 100k change the starter and Alt. just for PM. Twilite Zone offered 3 grades of starters. 1 fix what was wrong with it. 2 change out worn parts. 3 Full rebuild. I would opt for rebuild, it would last 2 to 2.5 years and go bad, I always carried a 7/8 wrench because when they when bad I had to beat on the starter to break the brushes loose. The reason I bought them I could change them out in 30 min or less. The Alt. was a different story I got either new or a rebuilder that I trusted because it was a pain to do. I now have a X5 and will not buy junk for a starter. Who wants to change a cv out every few months or couple of years. I've got better things to do with my time. I have worked in the trade turning a wrench.

Got an ad for O'Reillys when I clicked on this video XD
Really Enjoy these videos Nathan, wish I had found you sooner, I had an 07 328i that had rough idle, stalled sometimes, and had trouble starting. right after I had replaced the valve cover (bought at the dealership I know another crime against nature) $650.... didn't throw any codes or anything. it was my first BMW and I didn't do enough research so I replaced everything but VANOS, (spark plugs, coils, eccentric shaft sensor, MAF sensor ($324 OEM)) didn't solve the problem, and gave up (like I shouldn't have) sold it to a dealership for a KIA forte.... saddest day of my life. I found your E90 VANOS solenoid video a few weeks ago and it made me so mad at myself for giving up, seeing the issue you had it looked the exact same. The ONE thing I didn't replace solve the issue... definitely a lesson in doing the PROPER research like I should have... Recommendation to any prospective owners out there, listen to Nathan, don't even bother with Forums. if I had thought to check UA-cam for my issue I would have saved $18,000 (including the cost of the KIA)

For any Canadian BMW guys, check out germanparts.ca. They are great, fast shipping, and oem parts are about twice the price of the chinesium parts which is usually half the price of the dealer or specialist. But of you need something weird ebay always has you covered. Auto Value wanted 200 for a chineese wheel hub, ebay wanted 30. Ebay also had a GMB option for 200, perfect.

OMg I’ve bought hundreds of not thousands of dollars in shitty parts for my 96 impala from these plAces. It stayed in the shop and I couldn’t figure out why. Sensors, Cap and rotor, water pumps, alternators etc kept going bad. The labor was killing me. Then one mechanic said dude why don’t u just buy from the dealership Or on eBay? I did and the bleeding stopped.

What auto parts store would you suggest? I can't eBay stuff, because of time constrains, like most people. Ordered parts twice from eBay for a BMW,when the part arrived it was slightly different from picture, and would not work.
Who had good parts on stock. I always heard NAPA, but when pricing over the phone they matched, they quoted price from o Reilly's,so I know it can't be any better.

What battery do I buy I always look at the dates and choose the one made most recently from duralast from autozone autozone for 140 and it'll last like 2 years but when my car died and I was strapped for cash I installed a 50 dollar Wal-Mart battery and its doing fine 8 months in idk how long its gonna last though. Where do you buy a battery and what brand will last the longest.

I’m so damn skeptical, I haven’t got myself to take the chance on what would be considered good cheap parts.. I usually go for Lemforder and other parts that BMW uses as their OE supplier. I’m about to buy some replacement radiator hoses for my E90, and I’m looking at possibly Continental.. any other brand of reputable hoses for a BMW? My concern is the plastic ends with the clips and o rings.. that has to be precision made I’d think and nothing to mess around with. Also, how’s Vaico and Rein? Decent trustworthy stuff or avoid?

I share your frustration with the local auto parts stores.
I cringe every time I go in there looking for something and there is a young woman behind the counter, painted nails and all. She is the first one to ask if she can help. Hell no. If you don't have a beard and permanently stained black hands, I don't want to talk to you.
I used to get good parts cheaply at the local auto parts store but more importantly, I got advice. They didn't send me home with brake pads that also needed some install kit. They told me how to grease the bearing I just bought. They told me if the starter I was going to buy was coming back a lot and what brand wasn't.
I may as well go on-line for what the high school girl they have working there now can tell me.
Thankfully, they are there for use of the diagnostic tools, tool rentals, brake line and stocked items when you are in a hurry.

Always buy stuff that says made in Germany or Austria because they are way better parts then those junkie Chinese parts. I will give you an example I did a wheel bearing hand test between the OEM one made in Germany or Slovakia vs the Chinese one from the auto parts stores and before I replace the part I like to test stuff out to see which is good or bad part. I was studying to figure out why has everyone had bad luck with the Chinese ones that came from the auto parts stores? Well the wheel bearings made in China were put together too loose and sloppy. The OEM wheel bearings made in Germany or Slovakia were put together nice and tight and just doesn't separate like the Chinese ones. I have seen a lot of Chinese electronic parts and suspension parts fail so fast either in a couple of days or a week or month because they just made them like junk. The Chinese manufactures in China don't even know what in the world they are doing when putting the parts together and plus it's cheaper to make them over there. What I'm trying to say is buy good quality parts from Genuine parts or good OEM brands made 100% in Germany or Austria so they can last up to 15 years plus.

Dude, I been wrenching my own stuff since the early 70's! And if you have 'experienced' mechanics working behind the counter (for what wage?), yea, the guy will spend a lot of time talking to and cultivating customers..so what if you don't sell the guy a $200 part he doesn't need - the customer will remember that and come back and spend more money for other items he DOES need...like oil and all that other stuff. The mechanic behind the counter will spend a lot of time talking and explaining things...it's called CUSTOMER SERVICE. You don't get that with Amazon or eBay or RA parts purchases.

I hate the discount auto stores because they try to sell you the moon and the quality is shit.. A shop did some work for me and the gaskets leak, $1,254 to get the leak fixed. I can say that Advance has some decent parts and they are priced according to quality, there is also some shit parts that are overpriced. Buyer Beware.. I buy a lot of parts online and take my chances with the quality because I don't want to pay twice for the BS sales pitch of having a replacement warranty. (Rock Auto is just a warehouse)
